Default Having a hard time saving?

I just noticed is my bank does this for you.

Wells fargo has a new online banking system where you set a goal and what its for - say $8000 for a boob job - and another where you want $20000 for a house and say $15000 in savings.

It will automatically take your money in percentages and move them into your saving for whatever accounts - it also tells you in a % how close you are to each of your goals. Super cool...

I wouldnt advise this to those avoiding taxes tho...

I love the sound of that. I actually left Wells Fargo 2 yrs ago for losing my cash that I had deposited into the ATM... for almost 4 months! They didn't even apologise for fucking up. They did when I said and took my business to Citibank. I love Citibank, but they're having issues right now so I may be closing my account. I may just give WF another shot. I hate B of A and WAMU, used to have accounts w/them too. I really need to settle down with a bank. I wish I knew more about overseas banking (just for my savings at least).

Maybe you could try a credit union? Those can be great because they are much smaller; also, it's less of a hassle to switch credit unions than banks (especially if moving).

For savings I recommend ING Direct, because a) no fees b) you can link it to multiple bank accounts, change the primary one, etc and c) good customer service. It's all online. They offer decent rates on their accounts (used to be better but it's a nationwide problem). They also offer checking but you can't draw paper checks!

I currently have a credit union account, the US bank account I've had for 8 years, and an ING account. I use the credit union account for almost everything (they have 6% APY on their checking, refund your ATM fees so you can use any ATM you want, and other cool perks) but keep the US Bank account open because it's better for certain things... I'd prefer to not have it, though. The ING savings account -- I have it set up to automatically deduct money from my account every 2 weeks so I never spend it.

^^I second the ING Direct recommendation. I've got a savings and an IRA with them and have been very happy with their service.

I've kept my "emergency fund" in an ING Orange Savings account for 4 years now.

I also like the idea of making use of more than one bank. 'Segregating' money that you will not need right away in an online bank account paying high interest is a very good idea. However, I also keep some money in a local bank even though the interest rate is lower. I do this to make sure that some cash money will be available to me immediately if the 'system' should ever suffer a meltdown.

I wish I knew more about overseas banking (just for my savings at least).
Unfortunately for Americans, one of the consequences of the Patriot Act and the Terrorist anti-money laundering Treaty has been that American citizens wishing to open foreign bank accounts must show up in person at the foreign bank in order to prove their identity. Another consequence is that any American with a foreign bank account holding more than US$10,000 must report its existance to the US state department. Another is that any wire transfer transaction between a domestic bank account and an offshore bank account will be watched like a hawk by DHS and IRS. I used to have a Swiss bank account, but I was forced to close it because I could not afford to travel to Switzerland after the in-person ID requirement was put into effect. Obviously, the in-person ID requirement doesn't present anywhere near as much of a problem for an American wishing to open a Mexican or Canadian bank account ... but in general there is so much information sharing between the NAFTA countries that a Mexican or Canadian bank account doesn't really buy you much.

One nearby possibility that does NOT share bank account information with the US gov't is the Cayman Islands. It's also relatively easy to fly down to Grand Cayman for a vacation, open a bank account and make a deposit. However, because Cayman Island accounts are one of the few banking systems that are still truly 'private', the US gov't watches all transactions coming or going from the Caymans very closely ... including international wire transfers and even the personal carrying of cash when travelling there (which is subject to customs declarations).

Bank of America has a program called "keep the change." It rounds up any debits to your account to the next dollar, and puts the change into a savings account for you automatically.

    Just another idea.

lol... ^^ what i found interesting about that is i used to do that. when i was one of those balance my checkbook, keep track people i always round up. mostly because im lazy tho... so i always had extra cash in my bank account.

honestly - youd have to spend a LOT to actually save a nice amount with that. id have maybe an extra $20 a month... maybe... not much for a nice savings account.

I believe the first year they double whatever it was. So I had $60 saved (would have had more but spent a good chunk of it) and they doubled it.

Now that I strip though I use cash a lot more than my debit card. Still save my small change, same idea.

While I'm at B of A right now I'd rather just keep my savings in an account with considerably higher interest.

    to the OP...
Do you know what the actual percentages are?
i love this idea but we don't have anything like that in australia (i think)
I have an ING direct which takes out $500 a week for savings but i find it's too easy to "dip" into and withdraw when all my savings are sitting in one big pile.
i would love to find out the breakdown on just how much they reccommend saving via percentage of income and over what time period.

Thanks for this info. I've always wondered about over-seas banking. This is helpful.
