    Default Mommies with little ones...

Favorite products? Ones to stay the hell away from? I'm starting to shop for car seats, strollers, carriers, carseat-stroller-carriers, bouncy seats, walkers, cribs, etc. etc. ETC. It boggles the mind how many options there are out there...

Any recommendations would be a huge help as I wade through this sea of safety reports and vast quantities of online antecdotal evidence.

Really the only products I would worry about are the car seats and crib/mattresses. Definitely take your time investigating the higher end car seats and mattresses. And it's a SIDS risk if you don't use a new, firm matteress. I'm not sure which brands are best, but those are the most important things to get new mainly because the new stuff is always up to date on safety issues. Everything else isn't as important. Honestly I'd saved my money on crap like diaper genie, just get a freakin' diaper pale with odor eater thingies. Baby stores try to rob you.

Thanks! Babies R Us & some other moms on parenting forums make you feel as if you are a terrible mother unless you go broke buying every baby product on the market. My mom has already told me not to waste the $$$ on a changing table...it's very easy for the baby to roll off, so it's easier to put down a changing pad and do it on the floor or in the crib.

I'm looking to splurge a *little* on car seat & stroller, just because those will get the most use. My MIL is buying the crab & mattress and she wants to buy "the BEST", so no quality issues there.

I have never ever used a changing table. They're stupid! Once you get the hang of it you can change a baby anywhere lol.

    Aquaphor...have it handy
Mylicon SUCKS in my opinion for a gassy baby. I much prefer gripe water (which can by found at whole foods or other like stores).
The diaper geniue is a blessing
    Love the heated wipe thingy
    Baby Bjorn...get it..now
LOTS of nursing blankets, burp clothes in every room
If you're not breast feeding I recommend Dr. Browns bottles and use nursery water. There's something to it, swear
A large diaper bag, don't get something smaller cause it's handy..you'll hate yourself in the long run
The rainforest crib thingy... it's soothing music that's low and soft with a gently blue light, used to be an aquarium, but that seems to be off the market
Plenty of stabilizer blocks to keep baby on it's back and in place
Don't get a cheap carseat or crib. Invest in something nice. You don't want either breaking down early.
I'm sure there are soo many other things.
This is all from a nanny's point of view, so take it as you will. I'm not a mom, but I've raised many a babies.

Save yourself the money and buy a Moby Wrap. I love mine. I've never used an infant seat. It's heavy and cumbersome to carry. I would just take the kids out of their convertible car seat (Britax is the best, IMHO) and cuddle them into the Moby. I have 2 hands free, they are snuggled and warm and all was good.

I didn't use a stroller for either child until they were around 7-8 months old and I have a Graco. With the new baby, I will be buying a Sit and Stand but probably not until the new baby is around 7-8 months old.

Get a diaper bag that is a backpack or is a messenger bag style pack. The one you wear over one shoulder is a pain in the ass and you'll hate it (at least I hated mine, it was constantly slipping off my shoulder).

Forget the changing table. There is no way you are going to carry your baby to the bedroom every time he/she needs a diaper change. I change my son in whatever room we are. I'm not going to carry him up the stairs to change him a zillion times a day. It's also easier changing them when you are by their feet and not standing to the side. Changing tables should only be used in public places.

I also have disposable changing pads (that I use when we're out). The best ones are from Target. They're really nice...you can reuse them if needed, but they're cheap enough to just toss when you're done (I use them for the public changing tables).

We got a papsan baby seat for Adrian and he loved it. They now have a papsan swing (why can't they make this stuff for adults, too??) and we may get that for the new baby. But, I also have a portable ocean wonders swing (for when we go somewhere that doesn't have a swing, ie grandparents' house).

I would just skip the infant carrier and buy a really high quality convertible seat. The infant seats are almost $100 and only last to 27lbs (not sure of the length) and you'll have to buy a new car seat within the first year (usually). A good quality, new car seat will run you around $180-300. Might as well just spend that at the get go and a convertible to begin with.

Buy cloth diapers (Gerber makes some good ones). They are the best burp cloths.

Don't go crazy on baby clothes. I learned this with Makayla. She had so many 0-3 and 3-6 month baby clothes that I have some that have been packed away with out ever being worn and some still have the tags on them. They grow way too fast. Save your money for clothes for when they're older (besides newborns spit up a lot and sometimes that spit up just doesn't come out no matter what you do). Invest in a bunch of onsies and (depending on when your baby will be born) jammies.

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'll update as I think of some more.

Good advice all! I posted a while back about a very helpful article I found: "How to Prepare for a Baby (Without Going Broke)". I thought it was spot-on.

A lot of choices do come down to parenting style, so some items may be useless to some but essential to others; i.e. even though for many or even most, a crib seems like the #1 no-brainer, I'm planning to cosleep, so it's actually not necessary. (Many friends I know who co-slept and got a crib later bemoan spending $400+ on something that turned out to be basically an incredibly fancy stuffed animal holder.)

Seems like the only absolute across-the-board, required for ALL parenting styles, BIG purchase necessity is a carseat.

    Agreed with Rose.

We didn't buy a crib for Makayla because we co-slept with her. The first bed we bought for her was a toddler bed (total waste of money) and now her full size bed.

For Adrian, we bought the crib for him when he was 6 months old because he sleeps better in the crib than in our bed (he likes his own space). He still gets into bed with us occasionaly, but no where to the extent that Makayla did.

One thing I did love was the Snuggle Nest, if you are wanting to co-sleep. I had it for Makayla and lent it to a friend and never got it back. I bought the co-sleeper for Adrian and I hated it (it's not easy to bring baby from the co-sleeper to the bed without actually sitting up in bed, getting onto your knees, bending over to get baby and bring them into bed. Turning to the side and trying to do this torques your spine and is NOT good for you). I am actually going to be buying a new Snuggle Nest this week when I get to the store that carries it (about an hour away).

Never be afraid to hold off on buying really big purchases (besides a car seat...you need that immediately, obviously). I found that sometimes buying those really big purchases are a waste of time and money (as in the case of the Makayla) but waiting to see what you REALLY need and buying it at a later date is better (as in a crib for Adrian).

But, as a first time parent, it's so easy to get swept up in the moment and buying things for your child. For me, it's my 3rd and so I don't need as much, but have realized the only urgency to buy all of these big, expensive items is from marketing. All baby REALLY needs at this point is mommy, food, and lots of cuddles/hugs/love. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
