Default 101 Things To Do With Matzo! Or, what can I make to bring to a potluck seder?

Yay, I got invited to a seder next weekend! So I just bought a motherload of matzo and am contemplating what to make.

I'm going to make myself some matzo brei for dinner tonight, just cuz I wanna. But I'd like to bring a dessert to the dinner next weekend. A client told me about making a chocolate layer cake simply by whipping up a ganache, soaking the matzo, and just stacking the layers with ganache in between and on top! Sounds too good to be true . . .

Any ideas from the Jewish peeps on here? I'm open to all kinds of favorite Passover recipe ideas, not only desserts, though I do love the idea of desserts made with matzo.

    Help a shiksa out!

Ooo yay! I have a seder to go to as well. They're loads of fun and full of food friendly times.

Matzo is sort of hard to work with to make meals. I would recommend trying an appetizer with some passover friendly toppings, but I hope you get some better suggestions soon!!

I would make any kind of vegetable side dish. I hate matzo. The matzo grenache cake sounds delicious though! You would be welcome at my seder if you brought it! (Of course, you'd be welcome at my seder even if you brought pumpernickel, but you know what I mean.)

I found a sort of... matzo brittle recipe. Maybe you can google and find something better?

    Matzo Cream?

    With Matzo Chocolate Glaze?

And a side of Matzo Chili Fries?

That looks promising! I also like the concept of this one:

I'm wondering if it's kosher for Passover though? Hmm.

That would be kosher for Passover at my house, and most other people's. A very few strictly observant types won't eat the matzo if it gets wet, but they're a small minority in the USA. Just check with the people hosting the seder if you're not sure.

So, to be clear (sorry if I seem dense), it's kosher because there are no milk products, right? Due to the egg? So I need to make sure I use margarine and not butter?

"Fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables and grains can be eaten with either meat or dairy. (According to some views, fish may not be eaten with meat)."

But you're supposed to wait a few hours (it varies by opinion) between eating milk and meat. I would stick to margarine, or something else that does not include dairy. I think that leaves chocolate out too...

Dairy is kosher, you just can't serve it with meat. Presumably they'll have meat at the seder. If they're strict, they won't eat anything cooked in your dishes, but it doesn't sound like they're that strict (I'm not).

Foods are either meat, dairy, or parve (neither). Parve foods can be made and served with either meat or dairy. Eggs are parve, fish is parve for some reason, margarine is parve if it has no milk solids, butter is not. So you can use an egg if they're serving meat, but use oil or margarine instead of butter.

To be kosher, you can't mix dairy and meat products, but alone they are ok. So if meat is going to be served for dinner, no dairy side dishes/deserts/etc. may be served.
Eggs are considered neutral territory, neither diary nor meat.

Assuming (because this is a potluck seder) that your hosts are relatively lenient with kashrut, you should be fine.

Have a great time! Seders can be really fun.

I've been having a hell of a time finding pareve margarine lately. The only ones I can get are Nucoa or Mother's. Nearly all of the margarines sold in grocery stores are marked "Dairy".

That stinks. I hate margarine, so I haven't used it in years. I don't eat meat all that often anyway so I just don't make anything to go with meat that would have butter in it unless I can substitute olive oil. It's not too huge a hassle, and it's healthier. All those chemicals in margarine frighten me.

Thank you guys! I know about the no meat with dairy part, but was really unclear as to whether eggs and milk could go together. That probably sound dumb, but I was not wanting to assume.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it! I've always wanted to go to a seder but never had the opportunity.

Side note: I now have "What can I bring to a potluck seder" going through my head . . . to the tune of "What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor".

    <------ Big dork.

Oooh...errrr... I hope they're not the Jews who like stuff cooked in kosher kitchens and stuff. :/ Otherwise you're making non-kosher food by their standards.

Because of the way fish bleed and the scales they have they may be considered soulless and therefore parve. By Jewish law. Yesss..

Use almond meal and make a flourless chocolate cake (use a kosher for passover brand of choccie). Old trick of my grandmother's.

^^ Ooo, I like that idea too.

Lysondra, I don't think they're terribly orthodox but I will definitely call and check to see if my kitchen's offerings are cool. Seder may be called (for me) on account of labor, though. YIKES.

I can't cook and the grandmother in question is dead (plus all her recipes were in her head anyways), but just use any old recipe for flourless choccie cake. I'm fairly sure they all use nut meals.

I think you can also substitute matzo meal and almond or hazelnut meal for flour in pretty much any cake, though it won't rise in the same way as the original version.

Eee! I was a Passover baby. My Mom always complained that I took her away from the seder leftovers (I was born the second day).
