    Default lurker with workout question

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on here. I've been a lurker after a dancer friend showed me the site. I'm not a dancer myself but I've always admired the discipline you ladies have with working out, eating right and just keeping your appearance well maintained. I try to do it myself, but it never really ends up happening.

Anyway, my question is in regards to working out. I have 5 months before my wedding (!) and I want to be toned for it. I am 25 yrs old, 5 ft 2, about 112 lbs and I have NEVER really worked out before. I have an exercise bike and 3 lbs weights. The other day I worked out on it for 30 minutes and did about 50 situps after not working out in like 10 years, and I got sick and threw up afterward! I generally eat very healthy- spinach/whole wheat pastas, fruit, veggies, nuts, i drink almond milk instead of dairy milk, etc. I do not drink as much water as I should.

What workouts do you suggest I do that will put me in better shape in 5 months? Should I join a gym? I'm trying to avoid that because I'm pretty low on cash, but I will do it if necessary. I am pretty clueless when it comes to working out.

Thanks in advance. It's weird to post after lurking, ha!

Edited: I forgot to add that I have cellulite on my legs and butt. I'm a naturally slim person but I am definitelyyyyyyy not toned.

Eat often, every 3/4 hours so that you're eating about 6 meals a day. If you ever feel hungry - you waited too long to eat.

Small portions: look at your clenched fist for an approximate serving size of carbs, your flattened palm for the approx. size of protein). Low glycemic carbs(brown rice, sweet potatoes, oatmeal - not instant, quinoa, whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta) and clean protein every meal (chicken, turkey, fish, fat free cottage cheese, etc.), vegetable/salad with 2 of your daily meals.

Keep away from refined sugar, fruit juice & soda. Drink a lot of water, green tea (not the bottled kind, there is only one kind of bottled green tea that I've seen that doesn't have added sugar).

If you only do cardio - whatever shape you are now, you'll just be a smaller version of that shape. If you want to change the shape of your body, incorporate resistance training - lift weights. Train every body part. Muscle is more compact than fat, when you start lifting, you will get smaller regardless of if you are losing weight or not. Weight is not a good indicator of progress when you are trying to lose body fat.

You can find all kind of info online about nutrition & workout routines. If you don't want to join a gym yet, start doing a lot of isometric contraction stuff, or pilates, pushups, pull ups, one legged squats, walking lunges.

That being said - at 25 yrs old & 112 lbs I cannot imagine that you have cellulite.

    Anyway, hope this helps..?

I love the gym but you don't necessarily need to go to a gym to get a good workout, especially as you are just looking to tone up not lose weight.

I'd recommend investing in some weights and seeing a personal trainer a few times to learn to do exercises correctly that will help you tone up. Regular power walking and/or cycling will help too.

I take tonalin cla as do many girls on this site and have seen a great difference in how toned I look and feel. This might help you too. I don't have cellulite but I'm pretty sure cla has helped many girls lose it or greatly reduce it. I agree on lots of water and green tea too.

Anyway, let us know how it all goes for you

For toning up -- at that size -- weight training all the way!

But, if you are not in shape, you will probably gain *pounds* and lose *inches.* Stay away from the scale and stick close to the measuring tape... pay attention to how your clothes fit... I guarantee that just from some weight training and high protein snacks after each workout, they will feel looser and you'll have a leaner body.

For at-home muscle building, situps are good, so are pushups. If you go too fast, you'll get sore for a week. The trick with this is to not workout the same muscles in the next few days, but (and this is essential) start again before the soreness passes -- after it gets better somewhat but isn't all gone.

Be really careful if you throw your back out, though. Do stretches to keep from injuring anything. I keep screwing it up trying to do squats and I've finally decided I just won't do any @#$! squats. Instead I'm gonna do lunges -- I've never had any problem with lunges. Your mileage and anatomy may vary.

Oh, and drink more water -- ESPECIALLY when you exercise! I generally need at least two glasses during a workout.

Even just twice a week, a good strength training regimen will be useful for fat loss.

Another thing: I've found I seem to get more cellulite-y for a while when I start to lose weight. It goes away after a month or two, though.

Thank you so much for the tips. I am going to write them down in my 'workout' journal that I'm keeping now.

alabasterwing- I definitely do have cellulite. I know I sound like I wouldn't by my height/weight, but it's definitely there. I've had it since I was pretty young, I guess it's just in my genetics?

aussiebelle- i was contemplating finding a personal trainer for the exact reason you stated. you just finalized my decision. Now I just have to find one in this small town I live in. I'm also going to get the CLA tomorrow.

thechaosfairy- i didn't know about the high protein snacks after working out. any specific ones you recommend above others? also, i forgot to mention i have a herniated disc in my lower back. should i avoid any certain type of workouts? throwing out your back is *not* fun, i feel for you.

    Thanks again ladies !

Any protein you digest easily! A lot of people do eggs, or whey shakes, or whatever. Tofu, beans, etc also fine. Heck, once I just ate a packet of almonds from Starbucks. I usually like some form of whole wheat + cheese, or eggs + cheese -- I get along with cheese really well for some reason. I don't recommend most protein bars as they're full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, neither of which is good. To bodybuild you need a LOT of protein, but you're not trying to bodybuild, just to tone up (i.e., gain *some* muscle, which will speed up your metabolism and burn fat for you) -- so a little will do. I usually wind up eating around 20 grams of protein post workout, I'd estimate. Try to eat it about 30 min-1 hour after your workout.

Re: back, I'd recommend avoiding the squats then for now. :-) When you find a trainer, talk to them about it - a good one will be qualified to deal with these issues.
