    Default Mileage write off

I can use this when I drive to SF (for photoshoots) and to Reno (for work) since my home club is in Sacramento... correct?

They said the mileage rate for 2008 is 50.5 cents a mile... so I can put that as an expense, correct?

    Still doing my quarterly...

Also, can i write off food that i buy in reno/sf if i have the receipt? and full price of hotel..

Your tax pro will ask how much you spent on different categories . To answer your questions specifically:

Miles - Just give them the miles.

Hotels - This goes under the travel category ( so does car rental, parking charges , flights ect. ..... all travel stuff ) .

Food : This one is tricky. You would eat at home too, so you can count a few restaurant meals and get away with it , but this deduction is mostly related to business dinners.

Here are the categories your tax pro will ask for totals in each year:

    Supplies :

    Advertising :

    Travel :

    Food :

Home Office info and Utilites : ( this is for a self employed person with home office ... probably doesn't apply to you .... they also ask for square footage of business space in home )

Equipment : (this is things you buy to run your business that you don't resell )

Other Expenses : ( things that don't fall into other categories , for me it's my business phone )

    # of miles put on vehicle for business use :

    ALSO BRING :

Student Loan Interest info if you have it ( you'll get a tax break ) :

    Retirement Contribution Totals ( you'll get a tax break ) :

    Heath Care amounts ( you'll get a tax break ) :

If you own a home , bring interest info for that :

The categories can be very confusing at first. I print ALL finance documents off, bind them in a folder, get different colored highlighters and highlight each category. Then it's simply a matter of adding up all deposits you made , adding up your categories, and adding the category totals. The deposits minus your expenses are your income.

The receipts are for you to keep in case of an audit. Your tax pro will just fill in the amounts you tell them to. Receipts cover you in case your file is every reveiwed.

I HATE tax time. So excited to have it close to over !

There are other tax people on here that know more than I do, but this is what I've done the last few years. Am I missing anything here ?

ooh that a really easy break down for to Tax illiterate like me!

Can anyone else make sure this is accurate for stripping. I thought I remember seeing something about how gas mileage could NOT be written off.

It cannot be written off for your home club, only if you travel to another club. Hence why I put mileage for Reno and SF but not Sacramento.

qouted from melonie: "under IRS interpretations, business travel is only deductible if
    A. it consists of trips between different places of business but not from home to a place of business, or
    B. the travel was distant enough to require an overnight stay.

If you drove directly from your home to club 2 and 3 and didn't stop at club 1, these trips are probably not deductible. If you travelled from your home to club 1, and then from club 1 directly to club 2, the travel between clubs (but not from home to the first club) IS deductible.

However, your trips directly from your home to club 4 ARE deductible, along with the mileage, tolls, and hotel bill, because of the overnight stay."

Just putting it out there for people.

I don't mean to tJ but, if I drive about 60 miles to get to my club, and say I spend the night at some hotel each weekend, would that count as a deduction (the mileage and hotel)? If those were the only days I worked I could see how that would be a deduction for merely doing your job, which doesn't really seem like something the IRS would do, but what if I worked once a week or so at a club closer to home and didn't claim that?

^^^ the IRS has an 'unwritten rule' that any 'home to work' business trip involving less than a two hour = 120 mile drive one way will be considered as a non-tax deductible 'commute' ... UNLESS there is a motel bill proving an overnight stay was necessary. If you DO have motel receipts, the deduction should fly just fine, along with a deduction for the motel cost plus 50% of the cost of your meals.

I stay overnight when I go to Reno/SF and have the receipts so I should be all good.

I didn't mean to make that breakdown confusing. That's just the full info that my tax person requires from me. If I have a question about what category things go into , I just ask him as I'm preparing things.

I would really prefer to spend the night actually, so this could work out nicely. I hate driving home barely awake!

Meals = 50% deductible. There is a rate table for per diem meals and incidental expenses on the irs.gov site that you can use as a flat rate.

Home club = commute, not deductible. Includes cabs, mass transit fares, parking fees at your regular place of business.

Travel requiring overnight stays = deductible, includes car mileage or other transportation such as airfare and rental car, tips, laundry, communications (phone calls, internet charges).

What if you work at more than one location in your "home" area. It's not considered commuting if you are a contractor at more than one location....says my tax guy.

I just sent off a hefty check today....

^^^ all I can say is that a friend of mine who is an independent contractor in another line of business just got audited. He actually puts on 'seminars' at various hotels in surrounding cities in the NY / NJ area - only returning to hold another 'seminar' in the same place something like 2-3 times per year. The IRS wound up disallowing all of his travel expense deductions from home to the places that his 'seminars' were held as a non-deductible commute UNLESS he had an overnight room receipt to go along with the 'seminar' room rental.
