Default So apparently, I'm allergic to mango

Awesome. Just awesome. I look like I have leprosy of the face. It's all around my mouth and (being the smarty I am) I wiped my mouth and then touched my eyes. So my left eye is all puffy, too. I am hella sexy right now. How the hell did I suddenly become allergic to mangos? I've never had a food allergy before. I'm downing benadryl like crazy, but it's still itchy and swollen as fuck. I've called out of work for today and tomorrow, and I can't even enjoy the not working, because I look like a damn leper. I'm afriad if I go outside, I will have to be preceeded by a man shouting "unclean, unclean."

So, um, any ideas? Can someone help me get my face back? Please?

Oh, man. This happens to me all the time and I have no idea what I'm allergic to. I can't trace it back to any one thing and I don't have insurance to go to an allergist. So I can relate. Benadryl is about the only thing that can help you at this point, just stay wacked out on as much of it as you can take and sleep it off for a couple of days. When the rash heals up, it'll leave raw, dry, scaly skin behind and Carmex will help with this, but it'll be safe to put makeup over it and get back to work.

Well, fuck me sideways. Apparently, mangos are in the sumac family. They're cousin to poison ivy (to which I have the same reaction). Mother. Fucker. My stupid immune system thinks I came in contact with poison ivy and is acting accordingly. FUCK. It's so fucking itchy!!!!

I've also had a mystery allergy for the last 10 years. The reactions have gotten less frequent and less severe in recent years, but the first time it happened the reaction was very much like what you describe. For a while I suspected it was mango that was caused it. But I've eaten mango many times without causing a reaction, so either I only react sometimes when I eat mango (???), or it's something else.

At least you know what it is and can avoid it in the future.

Mangoes have a funny texture anyways *bleh* Yes, try the benedryl as earlier suggested. Don't try to itch it cuz it will only make it worse. If it starts to ooze or weep try to keep it dry and see a doctor.

I'm so sorry to hear this!!!

Picking mango's can be dangerous business but usually there shouldn't be a problem eating ripe ones. Was it underripe? Did you eat and chew the skin? The flesh shouldn't be a prob unless it was unripe.

Papaya is good for clearing up the scaliness left behind (Lucas' paw paw ointment is the best but as far as i know only available in Oz, you could probs get it on the net somewhere), you could also try putting something cool on the swelling, frozen aloe leaves are great.

If it's never happened to you before, there's a possibility it's the pesticide. Mangos are often grown in regions with unrestricted use of dangerous pesticides, and there is sometimes residue -- not usually on the inside of the fruit, but on the peel.

I would recommend going to the doctor and getting prick tests for food allergens -- that will mean there isn't a question about what actually caused the reaction.

If it is because of the plant family connection, the sumac family also contains pistachios and cashews, so be careful.

Aha, maybe not pesticides... but the rind.

Okay, here's a list of plants in the sumac family:
    http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ecoph43.htm

And what contains urushiol and what doesn't:

    http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ww0802.htm

And an article about a mango rind reaction:
    http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/extract/339/4/235
Apparently, it's a good idea for everyone to wash hands after peeling a mango!

It looks like urushiol (the poison oak/ivy allergen) may only be in the rind. (And cashews have it in their shells.

The eye touching thing makes it sound like a skin reaction and not a systemic reaction, which would back that up.

The reason I'm suspecting it's not a systemic allergy is because one of my friends also reported being allergic to mangoes only sometimes -- as in, she can eat foods with mangoes in them, and drink mango juice, but not eat fresh mangoes.

I did NOT know this. Or if I did, I promptly buried the knowledge deeeep down away from my conscious "let's mango" self. Also did not know pistachios and cashews were in the same family. The more you know! *cue rainbow*

Nuh uh on the texture, mango good for smoothies! Very creamy and seductive.

If it's the pesticides that are the problem, stick with the Haitian mangos. Fruit from Mexico is generally a red flag for me.

Well, the redness has gone down some, and it's less scaly, so... yay? My skin's still tight as a drum, though. Facial expressions are hurty. I look like I got bad Botox everywhere.

I think it was the rind that set me off. I've never had a problem with eating prepared mango, and the mangos were organically grown (and copiously washed). So, um, lesson learned.

I still want to scratch my face off. I think I need one of those head cones they put on pets.

^^^Ive heard of people getting that same reaction from the skins. I always wash my hands and face after eating mangoes just in case! Glad to hear you on the mend (-:
