Default Teeth grinding and jaw pain

Lately I've been having intense jaw pain (near my temporomandibular joints-on the upper back sides of my jaw) which causes very painful headaches.. I'm not sure if it's TMJ because I've never been diagnosed but I have all the symptoms.

I got a ready to mold mouth guard to wear in my sleep for the teeth grinding, but the side of the box says not to wear if you have TMJ or if your jaw pops (mine does). Wouldn't a dentist recommend a mouth guard anyway or it is not safe?

Anyone have experience with this sort of issue?

Check with your dentist. I had to have a special custom mouth guard made and I sleep in that. (I don't grind, I clench hard, and my teeth were breaking.) It's pretty comfortable because it's made to fit the top row of my teeth.

I don't know about mouth guards, but when mine gets bad (or stuck shut) I rub an accupressure point that helps. It's kind of on the web between your big toe and the toe next to it. I rub it for about 3 minutes and it gets rid of most of the tension. (it's the LV2 point, I'm sure if you google you'll find pictures of where it is)

Do you tend to clench your teeth a lot more when you're stressed?

I don't have a dentist-no insurance.. I'm looking into a dental only plan though. For now I'm just trying to see if it's okay to wear a mouth guard so I can try it out tonight when I go to bed.

I feel your pain, literally. I'm a stress-clencher. I'm too stubborn/lazy to get a mouthguard yet, so I've just been focusing on relaxing my jaw when I'm stressed, making sure I'm chewing properly (an over/underbite can really contribute to the pain) and popping ibu to help me relax when it gets painful. I know, I should go to the dentist but I'm uninsured too. And I have a mental grrrrr against mouthguards.

    whats tmj?

i do this too. my friend is a psychologist and she tried the mouth guard and found it uncomfortable so she then tried hypnotherapy. she said it worked and it she no longer does it.

i am going to let her hypnotise me and see if it works.

^TMJ is technically the temporomandibular joints but is often used as shorthand to refer to the pain in those joints.

Hypnosis worked for me too. After a year I'm starting to do it a bit again. I think I need to do it again. Still-a year!

Well the hypnotist turned out to be a creep, but it wasn't related to his work! (We dated) I'm really easily hypnotizable, so it wasn't that bad. I remembered everything, though it was a little blurry. I felt very relaxed.

You can get cds or download mp3s from online as well and listen to them at home. That's my preferred method now, after dating the hypno-creep. I like hypnosisdownloads.com

Yep, definitely more when I'm stressed, but even when I'm happy I still do it. I don't have insurance either... I should, but I've just been putting dental work on Care Credit and paying it off when I can.

I couldn't even fall asleep last night because my jaw hurt so bad from grinding the night before.. the odd thing is that it doesn't hurt if I'm up and about doing stuff, but about 5-10 minutes after sitting/laying down and relaxing it starts to hurt really fucking bad. No amount of medicine even helps. I guess this is where hypnotherapy would come in..

I was diagnosed with TMJ years ago, and started seeing an oral surgeon 10 years ago who got me started with injections after my jaws locked shut and broke my teeth. I haven't needed injections since because of the night plate he made for me (I also wear it during the day if I'm doing something stressful). The injections gave me immediate relief so I could open my jaw and get some break from the pain and headache. I have had other dental problems as a result of the TMJ, but at least the jaw itself and the joints haven't been in such bad shape.

The oral surgeon made a cast of my teeth for the night guard I wear. It's much different than the usual generic bite guard that I could buy anywhere because the guard made by my surgeon is designed to re-align my jaw/joints in a specific way to alleviate spurs and to address the exact way I grind more on one side. If anything, using a generic guard could make my TMJ worse because the alignment isn't perfectly tailored to me.

I don't have dental insurance, so when I traumatize a nerve or break teeth through TMJ problems, I pay out of pocket. However, some TMJ stuff that is directly related to the joint was covered through medical insurance.

I've heard of acupuncture working wonders, especially if your pain is radiating into your scalp, traps, neck and shoulders.

Well I woke up today with severe pain, so I had to find a dentist in my area immediately. I have neglected my teeth for 7 years (stupid, stupid me) and now I need a root canal, 3 wisdom teeth pulled and I have several cavities. No wonder why I'm in such pain.

I didn't have any symptoms of TMJ though.

Yea! I am glad I am not the only one that has to sleep with a mouth guard. Sometimes I feel so weird when I got to bed and have to remember to wear it. However I was actually wearing my teeth down from all the grinding and clenching !

I had a teeth-grinding-while-sleeping problem once (probably from stress) and no money. It was causing tooth pain, and so I was a bit freaked out, and thought I might have a cavity. I read that a cure for tooth pain was putting a clove of garlic in your mouth, up against the gums, due to the antibacterial properties. So I did that while falling asleep (I think I took it out before I actually *got* to sleep, didn't want to choke) and the sensation turned out to remind me not to grind my teeth. I think pretty much anything you can put in there that'll feel funny and not hurt your mouth would be a decent habit-breaker like that, at least until you can reach the dentist... piece of foam? kiddie vampire fangs?

Anyway, d'oh, didn't notice the OP had already got the problem worked out. Hey, if you need that much dental care, you might want to consider going to China or Thailand -- you can probably get it done AND have a nice vacation for less than the price of getting it done in your home country. Having needed a checkup pretty urgently (for what I thought was a terrible cavity, but turned out to be a piece of gravel stuck in the gum) I was impressed with the quality of care in Nanjing and have resolved that should I need serious dental treatment in the future, I'll hop on a plane.
