Default Highlights Question for the Experts!

I had my hair colored a few weeks ago. It's an auburn color, fairly heavy on the red. I'd like to get highlights, that are lighter, but is that going to work at all or am I stuck with lowlights?

Usually my colorist bleaches my hair to go lighter, so I wasn't sure exactly how that would work since I know that the red won't bleach out--I don't want to end up with pink streaks in my hair.

What should I ask for, in order to obtain the best results?

If you want medium caramel or copper highlights, you can have them... You'll be SOL if you want blonde. Bleach must be used if you want any lightness since it's the only thing that will lift previously colored hair. Unless your colorist is a dolt, you won't end up with pink hair.

The red will lighten up. The hair goes through different colors as it lightens. If you leave the bleach on too long your hair will turn white. Bleach eats color. Your hair will go to red/orange, orange, yellow/orange, yellow then pale yellow before going white. She can take the foils out and rinse you once you get to the color stage you desire. If the color is too bright or off tone she can tone it down with a demi-permanant color. Anything with a green or blue tone will cancel out red/orange.
