    Default 16 year old Maltese

My Mom's dog Daisy is 16 years old! She's a maltese. She hasn't been to the vet in about 5 years. My Mom is paranoid that are going to think she is a bad owner and try to arrest or take Daisy away from her. My Mom seriously loves this dog and so do I. She is like my sister. I've been on my Mom's case about taking Daisy to the vet to try to get her some pills to at least ease her pain. She still eats sometimes. My Mom says that some times she eats all the time every day people food and her wet food and then some days she doesn't eat. She goes to the bathroom on the puppy training mats my Mom puts down for her. My Mom and Daisy are both too old to climb up and down the steps. When I come to see my Mom if Daisy isn't sleeping she goes crazy and barks and races back and forth like she was a puppy. So there are still times (at least once a day) when she is full of energy and happy and wagging her tail. She is almost deaf now and blind. Sometimes when you pick her up she cries in pain. So I guess I'm asking a couple of questions... When do you decide to put down your dog? How do you know when they are happy? What if the vet gave her medicine to ease her pain? Do you think the vet will freak out when she sees her? Daisy won't let my Mom trim her nails and we are scared to put her under so they could even try. Any advice would be helpful. I made an appointment for 2 weeks.

Hey. First - nobody is going to arrest her or take away the dog. I promise. The dog should go to the vet. The vet won't even look askance. Second - the dog is 16. Your mom is obviously looking after her. Being deaf and blind is normal for very old dogs. However, there is no way to know what is wrong with her without going to the vet. There is certainly no reason to anticipate euthanasia on the facts you've set out.

My dog won't let me clip her nails either, but she will let the groomer. At 16 your dog is probably not a anesthesia candidate. It will be done while she is awake. But you might be surprised how easy it is for the groomer when it is absolutely impossible for you.

I don't think the animal needs to be put down. I mean the dog still enjoys her life and her mom does love her it seems. She won't die directly from not having her nails cut. And even my young dogs use the pee pad at times. She probably just has arthritis like a lot of older dogs have which is probably why she cries when being picked up. If there isn't any abuse or neglect which is causing the animal harm going on then there isn't any need for you to interveen IMO.

My parents have a really old shar-pei. I'm not exactly sure how old he is, but he is probably close to Daisy's age. He has bad arthritis and has his good days and bad. He usually just sleeps in their bedroom all day, but he'll come out of the room to eat and go outside. But, he occasionally has a bad day when he can't get up to eat so my mom just sets his food bowl in their room.

He still always wags his tail when my mom gets home from work and they said the day he stops wagging his tail when he seems them, they will talk about having him put down. I don't see any reason to put Daisy to sleep.

Yes please dont put her dont put her down unless she is in extreme pain. She is 16... theres no way they can say she has not been taken care of.

I hope the appointment goes well.
