    Default Buying a towed car?

so im looking to buy a car and the owner of one of the clubs i work at gave me the number of a guy who sells towed cars...wtf, i have never heard of this before. is it legit? is it legal? is it safe to do this? How do i find out if this guy is for real and not just selling stolen cars? is there any way i can run a background check on th person. he didnt give me a company name or anything, just a first name and number. is there a license these towed car sellers need to have and how do i find out if they have one? any info would be great
anyone live in LA and know about this? if you work at the body shop or if you ever bought a car from this guy please let me know, or if you know anything about the owner in general let me know. the dj said it was cool but maybe he just didnt wanna lose his job? the other girls said the owners and management were cool but then again...you never know.

Well, depending on state law, if someone tows a car and the owner of the car doesn't pick that car up within x amount of days and pay the impound/towing fees, the car can be considered abandoned. Or there could have been a mechanic's lien on the car.

Either way, I would stay far away from that. Especially if you are given just a name and a number. You could, however, call the police and ask them if this is all legit or if they are aware of this person/entity selling stolen, confiscated cars.

My big concern would be with title. Anyone can sell a car, but only a legit person can have a clean, clear title to pass on.

yeah, exactly. don't buy a car without a clear title
These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?

^^^ ultimately, it is the car's title that determines true ownership ... not who is in possession of the car, or who thinks they are owed money and have been given legal permission to repo a car as collateral. You do NOT want to wind up in a court battle that leaves you as the third party in a dispute between the 'former' car owner and a bank / mechanic.

If the person selling you the car cannot hand you a title, then they don't have it, thus they have no ownership of the car. Before you hand over any money, you make sure that they have a title.

I believe you can contact your local DMV for title information. Not sure on that, though.

a car title, like a property deed, is an official legal certificate proving ownership of a car / boat / motorcycle etc. If a car was purchased via a loan, the lender is registered on the title until the loan is paid off. If a car is repo-d because the loan went into default, the lender is STILL registered on the title until some court / judge / bureaucrat resolves the terms of default.

Your better off just going to a dealer or private seller (who holds title) and buying a car.

There are just way too many ways to get ripped off by buying a car that you may or may not own.

Just because someone abandons their car doens't mean that it's not unowned...like Melonie says...and that means that you'll be shelling out money for a car that you can never legally own. If the bank reports the car stolen, and you get pulled over...well, you get the gist.

Just go buy a car from somewhere that you know the money you pay for the car makes it yours.
