    Default S&p500

Average returns for the last 10 years=3.5%. Ouch. 10 years ago commodities and emerging markets were not a viable and accessible investment. ETF didn't exist. Tax laws were different, technology was less advanced, and financial rules/regulations were lax.

Trying to extrapolate the S&P500 TR out 30 years is a little simple and naive and does not make a good investment by virtue of these other factors.

Yes xanfiles, I am looking at you.

That only means S&P 500 is grossly undervalued.

To claim S&P 500 returned only 3.5% is also disingenious, because we also had the biggest bubble correction in 2000-2002.

Check out the Dollar Cost Average returns of S&P 500 for the past 10 years.

And don't forget the dividend that got paid out during those years and calculate the dividend reinvested returns.

Finally, there are plenty of 10 year periods where stock markets have had miserable total returns

^^^ which makes my previous point that there is time to own the S&P, there is a time to own bonds, there is a time to own commodities, there is a time to own real estate, and there is also a time to own guns and gold !

Absolutely, except nobody knows when to own which.

You can spend time chasing that elusional 1% extra return or you can use the same time to generate 20% additional income. So, it all boils down to choice

Agreed. BTW, not trying to state that S&P is bad investment. I just like to show how my portfolios kill the S&P index, which, as you said, doesn't account for interest/dividends.

My point was leaning more towards doing something besides a simle S&P500 index stock or fund in order to increase your value of medium investment periods. Not everyone has 30 years.
