    Default Ants in my apartment!

I've been in my apartment for about 9 months now, and it has been bug free all this time. It gets warm out, and suddenly I'm noticing ants! I've found six so far. I thought maybe they were coming in through my window, since I have opened a bunch since it got warm. A window screen doesn't quite meet the frame and I thougt maybe they managed to get in that way. I shut the windows. I found a couple more ants this morning, including one on my ratties' cage!! I haven't squished them, merely caught them and set htem loose outide because if you squish them, ants send out a pheromone that will attract more of it's colony to investigate. I am pretty anti-pesticide because of my preferred natural living, but I don't want ants in my place. Can anyone name some effective, but non-toxic ant repellant?

Baby Powder. They hate the stuff. I had to do this in TN--I put it on the windowsills and on the porch. It was funny though--because there was white powder all over my front steps--the neighbors had questions.

They won't cross it though--and if they do venture in, they'll suffocate.

    Black Pepper works as well.

ACK I just found four more and drowned them with my surface cleaner. I have no idea how they are getting in. Looks like I'll need to scrub my apartment now.

As long as you don't have animals or small children roaming around in the house boric acid powder kills them off too.

Try not to leave any trace of food or residue around, those ants will find them from miles away.

They are after food or water. Follow the trails if you can Investigate what they are into. I find storing food in cannisters/jars/ with tight seals works well.

If you are bottom floor apartment, make sure that the mulch, etc is a few inches away from the foundation. Also, using a mixture of water and cayenne pepper, spray it around doors, etc will help. Of course, some ants come up in the cracks of the floor (concrete) between the walls.

What kind of ants are they? Usually the little bitty ants aren't that bad...they are attracted to grease, oils, etc. Keeping the kitchen floor mopped all the time will help that. Carpenter ants need to be reported (to your mgmt company) as they will cause problems (chewing wood).

No, they are after my chow. I watched them, and learned they were after food, but I still can't tell where they are coming from. I sprayed the baseboards and windowsills with vinegar and pray to God I'm not overrun when I get back from my weekend trip. Thanks guys!!!

ya' know I am finding ants in my place too-i gound one crawling on my baby's bassinet. maybe it was thirsty and smelled leftover baby milk? lol

    I squished it.

do they really emit pheromones to attract more ants? I never heard that before...will now I will stop with the squishing and try baby powder around the window sills and doors. got plenty of baby powder around now!
