The best Oil for Cooking & Eating

So.... Olive Oil seems to be the head honcho. But it can have a somewhat heavy flavor so I don't use it on my salads. Also, It's not the best thing to cook with (since it has a relatively low smoke point).

What other oils are good for you? Any info on Sunflower, Almond, and Peanut oils would be appreciated too (since they are in my cabinets right now).

I love olive oil in absolutely everything. I use some toasted sesame oil too though, mostly for stir-frying. I just let it get hot enough to sizzle without smoking. Toasted sesame oil (as opposed to regular sesame oil) is absolutely delicious and cooks well.

I like the heavy flavor of olive oil, so that's what I would use for salads. The greener the oil, the better. I don't use oil for any other kind of cooking really, just a little Pam occasionally. But canola oil is good for you, too.

Sesame oil is yum on steak.

My olive oil comes wrapped in gold foil and is great for pasta. (I'm an olive oil brand hoar).

I like coconut oil for stirfry (and sesame as well. Combine!).

Coconut or palm are most healthful for cooking. I mostly use coconut and sometimes ghee/clarified butter.

Someone else here will probably have the patience to explain why the others aren't exactly good to cook with. I'm sleepy though.

Canola oil is good for you in the same way as olive oil, they are both higher in monounsaturated fats. The heart healthy kind. Sometimes canola oil may also be labeled as "vegetable oil".

I hope not! All my local birdstores sell rapeseed straight up for birdfood!

Canola oil is the worst oil to use for anything! Posting links is easier than explaining myself.

I've heard of people who were fanatical about using coconut oil in everything, claiming the health benefits and all that. That's cool, but I'm scared to cook with a saturated fat that's solid at room temperature, I don't even use butter, lard, or shortening in my foods.
I don't necessarily believe the hype that olive and canola oils are terrible for you, it sounds like the same news when people were claiming aspartame will cause cancer, etc. Whether it does or does not, I've been eating foods cooked in olive and canola oils most my life and haven't gotten sick yet, lol. I don't consume enough oils to have to worry about all that, though. Most of my foods are simmered or cooked in broth, so I don't add any oil. But I like olive oil for the delicate taste.

Oh lordy... I'm confused. I heard coconut oil and palm oil were really bad for you due to the high percentage of saturated fat.

I just use a little olive oil when I cook because I've heard about the benefits of preventing heart disease and protecting against some cancers.

I'm the same as you though AznExtasy, don't use enough oils to really be concerned. I mainly cook stirfrys in soy sauce and teriyaki sauce and I never deep fry or cook pastries and cakes or anything.

Unless you're deep-frying, I find olive oil to be perfectly fine for most cooking (saute's etc). I recently got into a disagreement with a friend regarding olive oil vs. canola oil. She saw some TV program that claimed canola was better for you than olive oil and now she won't be convinced otherwise.

Trying to decide what's "good" for you or at least the least harmful is so confusing. Apparently some oils (margarines?), even though non-hydrogenated, do in fact become hydrogenated at high temperatures. I don't know which ones though. Myself, I saute and drizzle my salads with olive oil. Any deep frying (which is rare) I use canola.

There's so much contradictory research out there. I use coconut oil on my skin and hair, and usually olive oil for food.

There's a lot of research lately that shows that saturated fats aren't bad for you. It seems like the saturated fat/cholesterol/heart disease connections were a little fabricated. I'm just putting that out there - if you're interested google or something, don't argue with me cause I won't argue back.

Basically, you need to use a variety of oils, not just one. There is no single uber-oil.

Canola is the creepiness, because it was artificaly selected to it's current state from a poisonous plant. What you buy is fine, I think, but it creeps me out so I avoid it. It's high in Omega 3's though.

Olive is good, with a medium smoking point (smoking point is where it goes from good to carcinogenic- must be careful!). Best for uncooked or lightly cooked foods.

Coconut oil is my staple. The fact that it's solid at room temp does not have the same implications as it does for, say, margarine, because it's not hydrogenated to get that way, that's it's natual state. The fat is saturated, so if your diet is already heavy in saturated fats and Omega 6's, prob not the best choice for you.

Grapeseed has a high smoke point, you can use it for pretty much anything, and it's good for you. Good choice. Also it tastes like nothing.

Sesame has a medium smoke point, tastes nummy, and good for baking.

Flax can't be heated at all, but is high in Omega 3 and pretty good for you. Good for smoothies!

So many more...Spectrum brand oils list the smoking points/max temperature on their labels, and suggest best uses (baking, frying, salads etc)

"Saturated fat is bad" is pretty thoroughly debunked by now. Animal-based saturated fats should be limited, but vegetable-based... you can pretty much live on them and be all right.

Things fried in canola oil have a funny taste to me and I get tired of them quickly so I'm guessing purely from my instincts that it's not good in high quantities. Chips fried in safflower or sunflower oil I can eat all day, and I've heard data that suggests these are better -- Tonalin also comes from safflower oil (though safflower oil by itself is not equivalent to Tonalin.)

Oh, and as regards heavy flavors of olive oil -- there are so many different flavors to be found! Extra virgin tastes stronger, light olive oil tastes less strong, but each e.v. tastes different. They come from so many different locations. A tapas place near my house will offer two different olive oils with their bread, "grassy" and "fruity". Shop around and ask friends to let you sample their favorite brands...

Extra virgin olive oil is the least processed, compared with virgin olive oil, olive oil and extra light olive oil, so it's the best for you.
Extra light olive oil tastes the least olivey but is more processed.

it just breaks down the values of the different fats that each oil contains. I found it when I googled canola vs. olive oil. The link claims that even though canola has a lower percentage of saturated fats than olive oil, olive is superior to canola because it has a higher level of monounsaturated fats.
