Default How do you design a webpage?

Ok, so I registered a domain name, and I want to have my own website.

I'd like to be able to maintain it myself.

Everyone keeps telling me to learn DreamWeaver.

BTW, I need a shopping cart on the page.

Frontpage is easier but Dreamweaver looks better.

Fuck both of 'em. Use Nvu. It's free and so easy to use it's pathetic.

I wouldn't bother with either FrontPage or DreamWeaver.

"Learning" them is not nearly as important as learning html, css and perhaps sql as well.

What I suggest you look into is Joomla.

Joomla will essentially do most of the work for you while you can simply type in your content without really knowing much html (although its recommended to learn html).

There are also various shopping cart addons to Joomla that install very very easily and will give you a walkthrough on how to set them up and install them.

One shopping cart system is osCommerce.

osCommerce integrates into Joomla very nicely.

Joomla basically a CMS (Content Management System) that will organize and display all of your content in a very organized and elegant way while allowing you to focus more on the content and what information you bring to the website as opposed to learning how much code it takes to get a proper website up and running.

They are both relatively easy to install and get going. So I suggest you read into them and give them a shot.

Also, registering a domain name is not enough, you'll also need to get web hosting for a place to actually put the files that will become your website. The domain name is just the address the outside world will use to get to the web hosting space to see your webpage.

I've only used dreamweaver and joomla. I like dreamweaver much better. Joomla is pretty cool I guess but is seems like it still has some bugs that need to be worked out...really annoying bugs.

I pretty much taught myself how to use dreamweaver by reading a couple of books and searching online forums for help.

Basic html and photo editing is handy to know. I'm still a newbie but I feel like I am catching on quickly. Now I am off to learn more about css and java script .

I've always used Nvu. It's a WYSIWYG editor, very similar to Frontpage, but free. It supports CSS and Java and all that crap really well.

    Dreamweaver is an editor.

Joomla is a Content Management system. Two COMPLETELY different things.

There is no "registering" with Joomla. You simply download it, install it to the web server and add content. Can't get much simpler than that.

Ava Jadore what "bugs" in Joomla are you talking about?
I haven't had to worry about any sort of bugs in Joomla for a while now.

Keep in mind Web Development is my actual profession. If you have any questions just PM me.

There's registration on the website to access diffreent pages on the website. Maybe it's not really required. If not, they should rework their site.

I'm sorry I probably should not have said anything since I am still just learning . I work with both Joomla and Dreamweaver at my day job to edit website content. I just don't really care for Joomla for editing purposes. I'm sure other people know way more and can be more helpful then me.

That would be to post messages on their forum.

Also, Joomla is not, I repeat NOT an editor for html or web pages. Its is a content management system. It has a few built in editors that you can use, some are WYSIWYG editors, some are not. Joomla is a website that uses templates to make designing the look easier, and easier to switch where everything goes on the website.

For instance, Rocket Themes is an excellent resource for what Joomla is capable of making a website look and run like with only 2 minutes of work.

Dreamweaver is just an editor, that is it. Joomla is a website in and of itself, that allows you to edit the content directly from the page.

Notepad++ is actually my preferred editor to use. Quick and simple, plus it will color code the code as you go. But once you get used to writing html code without the help of an html editor, editing in Joomla is about all you'll ever need to do. It just won't hold your hand while you do it like some will.

    Again, any questions, PM me.

But in short, just use Joomla for the layout of the website, and whatever you feel is necessary to edit the content. Then just paste that html code into the Joomla content pages to have it show up. Simple. Except you won't have to do the <head><title><body> tags, Joomla puts it in for you in a very efficient manner.
