Default Don't leave your contacts in overnight!

I know it says you can. I've gotten away with it for two years now and now it's finally caught up to me.

I have an infection in my corneas from wearing 'overnight' lenses. I wore them for ONE night and now it's possible that I'll lose the sight in my right eye. I have an emergency follow-up visit with a specialist tomorrow to see how the infection is reacting to the drops.

I'm scared now. I can't even open my right eye, am essentially blind and still have a newborn to look after.

Holy crap. I've fallen asleep in them before (ok, passed out drunk) but never had a problem until about a week ago when I took a 4 hour nap in my new acuvue oayses lenses My eyes were red and very painful when I woke up and it lasted until the next afternoon. I never knew you could have serious problems from them.

were they the acuvue night and day lenses??

I have them, and they say you can sleep in them for up to 30 days, and then switch them once a month. I've had no problems so far- but that's freaking me out.

Are they the ones I have or a different brand? That really sucks, i'm scared now. I should have known not to trust contacts that say you can sleep in them for a month. My eyes feel fine though- so maybe you have a different brand than i do.

Mine were PureVision lenses. Can be worn for up to a week before they're removed and soaked in a peroxide solution for six hours, or so the manufacturer says. The specialist I saw this afternoon mentioned that she's seen a lot of similar problems with the Accuvue Oaysis lenses as well. They cannot be worn overnight regularly without causing problems. Taking a 20 minute nap in them is okay, sleeping a full night is not.

I've been wearing this brand for years now, and I used to be able to sleep the week in them with no problems. Now, I've had them out for months and popped a brand new set in on Thursday afternoon. By Friday night I had to take them out because they were burning. On Sunday I can only see out of one eye and could lose the vision in the other. It happens that fast.

Don't wear your contacts overnight. Ever. Seriously.

I don't understand, you slept in contacts that were supposed to be overnight lenses and now you're having issues? That's awful! I go through seasons of proper eye care and gross under-maintenance... right now I've been wearing the same lenses for over a month, only removing them to add moisture and clean when they get blurry. And these lenses you're not supposed to sleep in. I know it's awful, but I haven't gotten new glasses and I cannot stand walking around blind, even if it's just from my bathroom to my bedroom. I really hope things aren't as bad as all this. Good luck with the doc.

Yep. Mine were supposed to be THE overnight lenses and they cost a bloody fortune. It made no difference. There's a movement in Canada to have them banned altogether. My specialist said she sees people almost every day with corneal infections from overnight lenses.

Seriously. Don't wear them overnight. The infection just comes out of nowhere and causes a lot of damage. Plus, now I can't see out of my eye at all. Whether that improves when the infection clears up is open to debate right now.

Well....if I'm OCD about hygiene and maintenance when it comes to lense care and I got an infection it's safe to say that your luck is about to run out too. It's not a matter of "if" it's a matter of 'when.' Like I said, I got away with it for two years.

At least I'm not paying out of pocket for this, thanks to the Canadian health care system. Just the thought of the medical bills alone ought to be enough to deter you Americans from playing Russian roulette with your eyes.

There have been products liability cases along these lines. Sometimes problems with the corneas don't show up until much later.

Please let us know how it goes. Get a second opinion quickly if you aren't improving as you would like.

Point taken. Thanks for the heads up, I always took the doc warning as second to my own personal experience.

^^^Yeah, me too. Wear 'em a week, soak them, change the pair after a month. BAM! Corneal infection all of a sudden, after two years of problem-free wear. This happened with a brand new pair too. Ugh. So sucky. At least I can open my eye now. I still can't see out of it too well, but it's getting a bit better from the drops.

You'll be fine. I had the same problem. I nearly went blind in BOTH eyes. But the specialist SHOULD be seeing you like RIGHTNOW. Not tomorrow. *sigh* Do not keep contacts in overnight, yes. NEVER BE SICK AND WEAR CONTACTS. The infection gets in your eye and trapped UNDER the contact like that. Always have backup glasses.

I sleep in mine for months at a time with out taking them out at all. These weren't even approved for sleeping in and were supposed to be thrown away i think once a week, I dunno. I started getting really painful eye issues but had no glasses so I HAD to wear them to see. I ended up being fine but it is scary.

My mom on the other hand did the same thing and her eye started actually incaseing the contact. They had to cut it out!

I know I'm a hypocrite for saying, be careful, but seriously. Once you're eyes are ruined...well...thats it.

No worries! I saw an opthamologist this afternoon. She put a bunch of freezing drops (bless her) and dyes in both eyes to make sure it was actually an infection and not an injury and then gave me eyedrops. An hour after the first dose I could actually open my eye again. Still can't see out of it, but at least it's open. I just have to go back tomorrow morning to make sure the infection is actually going away and not getting worse...which I wouldn't be able to feel since there's a numbing agent in the drops.

I just want to see out of both eyes again. My depth perception is so messed right now its hilarious. I don't dare carry the baby because I'd probably trip.

So I saw the opthamologist again this morning and the infection hasn't gone away. My cornea is still really spotty. She gave me some anti-inflammatories because my eyeball is swollen and putting pressure on...something (I don't remember what exactly.)

Anyways, I can see well enough out of the eye to function so that's an improvement. I won't take a chance like this again though.

Did she mention glaucoma? Will you get closer following for the next year or so to make sure there are no consequences later on?

Yeah, I got a very unpleasant glaucoma test this morning too. An itchy infected eye feels much worse after they blow air into it.

Anyways, it's just an infection. It's not clearing up fast enough so I have steroid drops to put in there too to take the swelling down.

Are your corneas swollen? and it is affecting your vision?

Yikes. My sister had a similar problem, but I don't think she ever got an infection. Her cornea had flattened out from the contacts she wore (the weighted ones) and wearing them all the time. They finally got her vision back to some-what normal (which is still really bad for her), but she will never be able to wear contacts again.

you're in my thoughts kitty, I really hope everything turns out ok, eye issues are scary!
