    Default Pickled Garlic!

I just made some pickled garlic. Two heads' worth of fresh peeled garlic cloves are pickling away in a little mayonnaise jar in my kitchen! I simmered apple cider vinegar and sugar together and stirred in some big spoonfuls of yummy pickling spices that a sweet and wonderful woman (who has great tits too) sent to me back in March. I boiled that for five minutes, simmered the garlic for another five, and then poured it all in the jar. There's some dried chiles in there too.

It looks and smells so delicious! I have to wait three weeks before I can eat any of it. I'm just going to push it to the back of the fridge and try to forget that it's there until May 11. But on that day... oh yes. There will be homemade pickled garlic for the snacking.

Now I want to pickle something else. I'm thinking carrots maybe. Any other suggestions? Would cherry tomatoes be good pickled?

You know what's really good? Queen olives stuffed with pickled garlic and a sliver of jalepeno pepper.

    Num num num.

Me too but I don't have any. We bought a huge jar at Costco and polished them off in three days.

Oooh! And asparagus, even though I usually hate it. I got a caesar at a gay bar once and instead of celery they used spicy pickled asparagus. SO good.

Ooh! Some good ideas in this thread. When I go to the farmer's market this week I'll pick up some extra carrots and asparagus for pickling! I wish I liked olives.

K doesn't understand the pickled garlic thing because he's never had it. I'm confident he'll love it once he tries it though! He loves garlic as much as I do. I've got him sold on the idea of dropping a pickled garlic clove into a martini, and I think he'll pick up the snacking from there. I'm thinking it'll be good in salads too.

I like pickled tomatoes. I put them in my martinis.

Pickled pumpkin is good too. I know, it sounds so gross, but my grandma does up a sweet brine with cloves. It turns into a sort of syrup and the pumpkin stays relatively crunchy. It's sooooo good. Not as good as the olives, but still pretty good.

I'm confused. You eat the barely cooked garlic by itself? I don't know anything about pickled veggies. Does it lose the strong garlic flavor that you can just pop them in your mouth?

It still tastes garlicky, but yes, you can eat it by itself. It tastes like very strong crunchy garlic pickles. I haven't had it in many years so I'm hoping mine turns out as good as I remember. I think using cider vinegar instead of white vinegar was a good twist, but we'll see in a few weeks.

I sooooo want to try that pickled pumpkin! I might do that this fall when the pumpkin comes in! In the meantime the carrots, asparagus, and cherry tomatoes all sound good, and I'll probably do some pickled cauliflower too. I love pickled veggies!

    How did I miss this?!

That sounds so delicious. I've never done any at home pickling, I didn't think I have the patience for it. But it only takes 3 days for garlic?

Oooh, is this giftable? Are they pretty in the bottle floating around? I think everyone is tired of my infused oils.

Three weeks, not days. And yes, they're beautiful! I'll take a pic later if I remember, but it's all white cloves floating around with the seeds and spices, and the dried red peppers make it look really pretty. The brine would be clear if I'd used white vinegar but with the cider vinegar it's a pretty golden color. I think it would be very giftable; I'm debating whether to make tiny jars of it for wedding favors. It was so easy too!

Lol, that's the impatient chef in me reading three days.

Regardless, I think I'm going to hunt down a jar and try some.
