Default I'm hating my fresh new highlights

    *Le Sigh*

My hair is dark natural brown & I have (almost) platinum blond highlights in the front. I hate that fucking look, shit is so 1999-2000. I look skunky. People loved the way it looks on me though, got a lot of compliments but I wanted more of natural look. Like caramel or champange color. Not this heavy contrast.

I loved the way my new hair dresser did my hair the first time, this second time she went bleach crazy. She put on a toner but it's still not blending in.

Is there any product that I can use to make the highlights look more warm instead of bright? I don't want to dye my hair again, i'm afraid that shit will fry ya know.

Use a product designed for Low-Lites.

I'd recommend "Toffee" for your situation.

You can put a demi-permanant level 8N on there. Go to Sally's ask for a demi-permanant level 8N with it's proper developer. Don't get Loreal Professional, it gets too dark. Get Clairol or Wella. Go home and mix it according to the instructions. Make sure you saturate your head completely. Demi doesn't have ammonia in it so it should just condition your hair. You will see the color changing once you put the demi on your hair. Don't leave it on for more than 5 or 10 minutes then rinse throughly. Don't wash for 24 hours after that.

^^ She wont be able to get Wella if she doesnt have a license. But yea, I agree with Green ID to get Clairol Professional at Sallys but I think if you have very dark hair a 7N may be better. 8 is still quite light. I just did this to my girlfriend... but then again better to do a 8 and if its still too light wait a couple weeks then do a 7. Or just come on over to California and Ill do it for you.

You gotta remember too with the hair being porous and that blonde plus using a demi which tends to run one shade darker the 7 might be too dark for her. I think they do sell the Wella at Sally's to the public, I may be wrong though. But Clairol will work too.

At school when I had highlights for myself that were to light I toned them with a 9N demi and it took them to a medium blonde.

Not arguing - but... because the hair is porous the toner will fade so a 7 may be a little darker at first but will lighten within a couple weeks. 8 will fade and it will go back to a 9/10 that she has.

<---- When I colored my hair to the color in my avatar I used a 7N over bleached porous hair. That photo was taken about a week later. Within 4 weeks I had no color on my hair anymore... it all faded back to blond level 9/10. If she doesnt add a little red it will fade and fade fast. Red will help the color stay but I dont want to have a do it at homer add red to their color because it may overpower it.

If youre using Wella then a 9 is actually an 8 when you use a 10 vol dev. Wellas color line is based on using a 20 vol dev. I hated using Wella in school... I hate their colorline.

I'm am not trying to argue either, I just think my experiences have been different than yours. :-)Wella isn't a bad color line but has a lot of ammonia in it IMO but I find they are pretty true to color. I've had decent results with it. I like it a lot better than Loreal professional. Loreal takes super dark and will not fade. I like our color line better than Paul Mitchell's. Paul Mitchell color will fade in two days. I find that the Aveda color line is very conditioning and rich. It also gives the hair beautiful shine. I've heard great things about Goldwell but haven't tried it yet.

You are right about the fading issue. But I was taught that unless you are going three or more shades darker you don't do a color back. So I suppose if she is level 10 and wants to go to a 7 then she will need to add tone back first. That tone being yellow/orange. So then she should opt for a 7 Y/0 demi, especially since she wants warmth anyway.

Sometimes instructors will have us tone with a permanant if we are only going one or two shades down. So, if she wants to go to a 8 and 9 and reduce fading she can actually use an 8 Y/0 permanant for the golden tones she desires.

LOL... we dont use any of the same colorlines! I use Matrix and Redken. See, I hated Wella... of course my instructors were idiots too so... go figure.

I color my friend with Wella 4/77 and 6/77 then I use Redken 7N for highlights and its perfect color... caramel highlights over med brown...

You use the 77s? I LOVE the color - its sooo rich. Its the ONLY Wella color I use. Milk Chocolate and Chocolate Truffle. Yummy.

I've used Wella on myself. I use Aveda obviously at school. I don't know a great deal about any other colorline but Aveda except what I've personally experienced using them on myself and my family.

Vyanka- how about calling your stylist and telling her you're not satisfied? It's really an easy fix, it's just a matter of using the right toner. I would suggest against DIY fixing... As a stylist, I'm more than willing to make adjustments- I want my clients to be happy. However, if a client tries to fix it herself and fails, I charge my usual service prices.

You gotta be careful choosing color. Every color line is different. N in one line could mean neutral; equal parts red, blue, and yellow... in another it could mean "natural" and be a very ashy or warm tone which would= green or brassy highlights in your situation.

I meant neutral but I thought in her case a Y/O would be better.

But I think you're right in telling her to go back to her stylist and say she isn't satisfied first.

I was thinking about this while in the shower and came back to say to go to your stylist and ask her to make your highlights the color they were last time. The color you liked. But uh, Im too late...

GreedID... youve been in school a while. How many hours are you at now? Graduating soon?!

I'm right at 900 now. I have to have 1500 to graduate. I should graduate the end of August or first of September. I actually started in July but took a leave then re-started in September of last year. But we spend 4 and half months in theory and doing practical work only on our mannequins, each other and friends/family members who volunteer. We aren't allowed to work on the public until we have 400 hours. The rest of the time is spent on the floor working on the public.

I enjoy it, I feel like I am getting a pretty good education. I'm thinking about going to Vidal Sassoon and taking some advanced classes after school, I dunno though I'll probably be pretty anxious by then. We have a career fair tomorrow so I don't really foresee getting a job at a decent salon being a problem but I still want to go to a salon that encourages you to keep getting education.

It's odd we have to 100 roller sets and 100 blowdry/marcels on our mannequins before graduating too. It's like the state board could give three shits less about foils and cutting which is the bulk of what we do on the public.

Did you have to do a lot of roller sets to graduate too Audrey? Sorry, I'm not trying to threadjack.

yea... we needed the same. Its actually 200 Wet Hair Styling. Blow drys and Rollersets both went into the Wet Hair Styling column. I guess they think if you can do a wetset or a fingerwave you can do anything!

I just did a bunch of fingerwaves. I could do one in 3 minutes so I would do like 10 a day in the morning on my mani and got them all knocked out real fast. I finished all my operations like 4-5 months before I graduated.

You know, I think I will. Because everyone said I looked spectacular and from looking at the pictures I took over the wknd, they kind of look decent. I'm going to give it a few days and see.

I think you should just let your hair settle down if you JUST got it done....

One reason is because Your hair will change and you may hate it now but loooove it later. And you don't want to put more crap in your hair for nothing.

When I got my highlights done I thought they looked disgusting because I found them to be too chunky and orangy. But then after some time they started to blend and mix in...and I know it was cuz of the bleach making my hair break. That's why I stopped and went dark.

But all in all, they started out a mess and turned out to be off the hook.
