Default Something is wrong with my stomach.

Every time I eat, I get a stomachache. Like, a bloated and crampy kind of stomachache. I already knew I was lactose intolerant, so I quit eating dairy completely (I used to eat it anyway and take lactase). But apparently there's something else wrong, too. I don't know what to do. I'm afraid to eat!

You could be allergic to something else (gluten or wheat for example). Or it could be some sort of stomach ailment like reflux or ulcers.

I'm sorry you don't feel well.

Yeah, do you also get acid reflux? My mom had such bad acid reflux that it ended up causing her upset stomachs and diarrhea every time she ate. She started taking some medication for reflux and it took care of it. Or allergies are another likely option.

yeah you sound gluten intolerant....and many people who are gluten intolerant are also lactose intolerant. Cut anything that has gluten in it (unfortunetly that's a lot of foods) out of your diet and see what happens.

They said my lower esophageal sphincter didn't always close when it should, and that resulted in regurgitation. But I'm reading, and that's also the cause of acid reflux. Interesting...I need health insurance.
You sound gluten intolerant. Welcome to the club!

I don't know anything about gluten intolerance. Is it really hard to adjust your diet?

At first it is. When I first switched to completely gluten-free I ate "gluten-free" stuff like cookies and crackers from the supermarkets (WholeFoods). Then I decided to cut the crap and started eating yams and sweet potatoes (sliced and baked like fries or chips) ... then to popcorn i'd prepare on the stove ... but for the most part, it's all about protein and vegetables and the natural fats that come with cooking these things. So, I'm healthier because of it. AND I feel WAY better.

Another convenience food - Terra Chips (sweet potato and sweet potato/beet)

The first two weeks I think I was sad as I'd peruse the aisles at WholeFoods. But now, it's a piece of cake.

I have this exact problem (though it could be from a different cause). Try taking antacid pills (generic brand will do) about 30 minutes before you eat. I always get this painful feeling (where you can't suck your stomach in b/c it kind of feels like you have a rock sitting in your stomach?) after I eat acidic foods/drinks. Acid comes in a hell of a lot of things: fruits, carbonated beverages, etc, etc. So basically anything could be setting this off.

This feeling can also be caused by an abundance of gas. You can get pockets of air in your intestines...which can be painful.

This is going to sound a little invasive, but have you ever pooped blood and mucous? I do fairly frequently. It's how I found out that my tummy troubles were IBD. Which disease it is exactly is still a mystery, the specialists don't know because they can never get in for tests at the right time. They've always ever seen either forming ulcers or healing ulcers. I'm actually (maybe) going to try a macrobiotic diet when I feel a new crop of ulcers coming on to see if it makes a difference. I doubt it since I've had bouts where a glass of room-temperature water sends me running for the bathroom for hours, but it's worth a shot I guess.

Oh, and I forgot! My gastro specialist said that taking probiotics is supposed to help regardless of the condition, so that's something to look into. The shitty thing is that they can take a week or two before you notice a difference.

Oh gosh, you're lucky. No blood or mucous pretty much rules out IBD, but yes, probiotics might be the ticket. I think you can get capsules. Just eating Activia yogurt to get them takes way the hell too long, plus the dairy isn't going to help matters.

When I really can't take the pain anymore I find that sitting in a chair and bending right over so my tummy and chest are pressed into my lap really helps. Another lovely tip from Dr. Gastro dude is to lay on your left side in the fetal position. If you can lay on your side and fold yourself up with your tummy against your legs that's even better. When I do this, I get close enough to the wall so that all I can see is a single solid color and focus on my breathing. Eventually, my brain developed a strategy to deal with the pain. Now when I'm having an attack my brain automatically converts the pain to heat. It's bizarre, but it works. My brain went into autopilot in the same way when I had my daughter.

If it's going to turn out to be a chronic condition, you'll develop coping strategies. But let's just hope it's a lack of probiotics that's causing you trouble.

...actually, sorry to burst your bubble, but it usually takes between 2 weeks and 2 months for gluten to clear out. Hence why so many people who have this problem don't know they have it

Re: probiotics, my partner who is dairy protein sensitive found out that the trace amounts of milk protein in acidophilus pills can cause him problems. But soy yogurt is perfectly fine. So I'd recommend getting soy yogurt if you have a dairy sensitivity.

Something is inflamming your gut. Common irritants are things like gluten, dairy, nuts, eggs, and alcohol. I would elminate all of these for 2 weeks and then add one back into the diet to notice if there's any reaction. As far as anti-inflammatories go there are enzyme formulas by Enzymedica that are excellent and fish oils (e.g., Norwegian cod liver oil).

When your gut is sensitive to something, even a smidgen of ____ can cause inflammation. This is why when people are sensitive to something it's best to comletely cut it out. There are other drugs that help to mask symptoms of gut inflammation but eventually these do more harm than good because they're not rectifying anything.

You'll feel better once you figure out what the culprit is.
