    Default Children are so simple

I was talking to my daughter about the war this morning. She saw the political candidates on tv and was asking about them so we start talking. At one point I say "We're fighting for oil honey. Oil for our cars" and she says "Then why dont we ride bikes?"

Children are so simple. It really took me back for a second because its the obvious choice, right? Children go right for the OBVIOUS while Im over here saying "Well, Ill still buy gas, even it its $10 a gallon"....

She's absolutely right, of course. K and I are getting bikes in another week or two.

I wish it were that easy. I would love to ride a bike everywhere. But it's just not feasible for me. Even to go to the grocery sore right on the corner, how do you transport the groceries home?

Living in a very very hot climate riding a bike in the summer months would not be possible either, as you cannot spend very long outside at all, espicially not doing a physical activity like riding a bike.

And then theres going places like to work or school, which are just way to far to ride a bike to, not to mention the fact that you wouldn't want to arrive at work all sweaty and stinky and unfresh....

it sounds like such a good idea in theory..and I'm sure it's more doable for some people. I wish it were for me. Physical activity to make you sknny, plus save money on gas plus help the enviroment a little? It's such a win win situation. It's a shame it just isn't a viable option.

I wish that more carpools existed though. I know that at least 5 strippers all live in my apartment complex, and even if we arent going to work at the same place, all thej clubs are in the same general area. It would be great to carpool to work. But you cant exactly put up a sign in the apartment office advirtising a stripper carpool...

I can see it now... lol

Yea, youre right... and its hard for me to do much because when I go anywhere Im buying things which wouldnt be plausable with a bike. Its not like I just drive around for the hell of it.

But still - shes so cute... when we go to the park we walk or ride bikes - I see people driving - to the park - where the point is to get sunshine and be outside. It makes no sense to me and the park is almost 10 blocks from here.

In a backpack or a luggage rack on your bike. You may have to go to the grocery every couple of days instead of every couple of weeks, but you get fresher groceries and better exercise that way anyway.

Why not? I can't imagine many climates in the civilized world that are hotter (or more humid) than Memphis and Queensland in the summer. I've spent plenty of summers in those climates getting around by bicycle. Wear lightweight clothes and drink water, and you're fine. People didn't just sit inside in the air conditioning all day before cars were invented.

They're not too far if you live close by. I still intend to drive to work, since as a stripper I just feel safer having my car when I leave. But for school and a regular job, if you live within a few miles there's no reason not to bike. You can always freshen up in the bathroom if you need to. My father-in-law rides his bike fifteen miles each way to work and back - in Los Angeles! - and he has a very formal corporate job.

Yep, bikes are great! Have you thought about something like this for carrying around the things you need to carry?

And don't forget to wear your helmet and to follow the rules of the road. I get annoyed when I see cyclists that are going the wrong way on one way streets, or are riding against traffic on busy streets. That is a good way to get run over!

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

^ Yup. Bicyclists have to obey the same laws of the road as cars do. Stop at stop signs, stop at red lights, etc. My brother ran over a bicyclist going against traffic. He was turning right out of a parking lot so of course he doesnt look right because the cars come from the left, he pulled out and bam. Hit her. He was just pulling out so she wasnt hurt, bike frame was messed up. Insurance wouldnt cover any of her "injuries" or her bike but eventually paid her like $200 to get her to shut up and stop bothering them.

That would be doable. The grocery store is very close by. I walk there for milk or small items.

115 degrees in the summer. Not a chance I'm riding a bike for miles in that heat.

The clubs are to far. It's a 20 minute drive. Not to mention that I cannot ride my bike home at 4am. It's not safe.

I don't know who they are, I just know that a lot of dancers live here. I don't know who they are or where exactly they live...it's just well known that this is a heavily populated stripper apartment complex, lol. Although I suppose I could just go down to the pool and start talking to some girls....

Peanut Butter, there's answers for every one of your objections. Not saying that they'd be easy answers or that they'd be more convenient than getting in a car and driving, but I'm just sayin'...

These are locally-made and expensive, but an idea of something that could replace a car for many kinds of trips. The more people make them, the higher gas prices become, the cheaper these kinds of options are going to become.

For instance, living closer to work, or choosing a neighborhood where one could walk or bike to grocery shop. Maybe not owning a car would mean more money in your pocket - not just because you wouldn't be paying a car payment, insurance, gas and maintenance, but also wouldn't be tempted to make large purchases of stuff that wasn't necessarily needed.

I know it has worked out that way for me. I don't own a car, though I have one when I need it via Zipcar. I only buy what I need when I go to the store. I have a bus pass provided by my employer and it's a 15-20 minute bus ride to my office (including about a half-mile of walking), where my friend has to commute from across the river and it takes him 45 minutes each way.

I know that those kinds of options aren't for everyone but for me, the benefits (more money and healthier lifestyle) far outweigh the negatives of not owning a car.

Not for everyone, but I've a feeling more and more people are going to be considering changes like this. Gas prices appear to be beginning to affect American gas consumption - for the first time since 1991, consumption went down, and for only the eighth time since 1951, demand went down. Not by much - but just the fact that it went down is significant.
