The owners of Players, a small topless bar in Amarillo, are among those suing the state. They said that adding a $5 tax to the $4 cover could drive away customers and force the club out of business.

"They won't pay it," said Chandra Brown, president of the company that owns Players. "They won't come in. They can't afford it."

....18 million is dedicated for sexual assault education, rape crisis, etc... and the rest goes to the general fund. Hummmm, 18,000,000/5 = 3.6 million people. that would mean less than 50% goes to the intended cause. Its on appeal but they still have to pay the tax until the appeal is ruled on. Nobody wants to fight the IRS if the tax is still "on".

"The strip clubs are suing to block the tax, which state officials estimate will raise more than $40 million a year, based on liquor sales figures. If accurate, the estimate suggests at least 8 million people a year go to Texas strip clubs to get a lap dance or watch women pole-dance."

How come you always say what I'm thinking? Get out of my head!

Seriously though, $9 is too much? I've worked clubs where a bottle of water costs that much. What's an average night in your club, if you don't mind my asking? I can see not paying that much cover if they have the mindset that it's one less dance they could buy.

^^^You have to understand a couple of things... First off, this is the NORM in this area. I've worked the top three clubs in my city, and all of them have three things in common: low cover charge (usually under $5, but it varies depending on what time of night you arrive), cheap beer (domestics are $1.00 from 5-6, $1.25 from 6-7, $1.50 from 7-8, $1.75 from 8-9, and $3 after 9), and hourly shot specials (usually offering shots for about $2-$3). This is just what the customers expect in this area.

So an average night in my club, I might make $200. On Thursday nights when we host the pool tournament, I can usually make $300 or $400. On Friday nights, I usually make $150 or so. On Mondays, I have trouble breaking $100.

Besides the actual numbers, I for one am appalled that they are trying to tax the fucking clubs there. DUmb! Dedicated to rape crisis and shit? Ok, not like that's a bad thing per se, but wtf is that implying about strip clubs? They are taxing them because they are evil or what? I'm glad ya'll are fighting it, it seems wrong on so many levels.

I like the analogy I read (don't remember where exactly I'm stealing this from): It's like taxing tobacco to provide funding for drug rehab. The implication is that tobacco use leads to drug addiction. Likewise, the implication with stripclubs is that they lead to rape and domestic violence.

It might also interest people to know that a year before this law was passed, a similar tax was proposed, but the money would've gone to Texas schools. That law never passed. It was re-incarnated to pay for rape centers.

That makes me fucking angry. It's stereotypes like this that make otherwise wonderful people like my dad worry that I'm going to become some sort of drug addicted whore prostitute from the evil pole dance. Grrrr! And to impose a tax based on such a false premise.... OMFG I would enact the 2nd fucking amendment....
