Arrow help please with creative answer.. read.

Rob needs a good creative answer (interview worthy) for this question:

Why would someone find it rewarding to help someone else?

(not the basic it makes me feel good or I like it or w/ev...)

thanks much!!!!! We would love for him to get this promotion, and the supervisor who reviewed his app asked him to add that in.

Helping others releases "feel good" endorphines in the brain that gives one a natural high. Unfortunately, it can be highly addictive.

To see others achieve their goals.
In helping others we help ourselves. (if it refers to a company, helping another can help the company over all.)

"because it reassure one of his/her own abilities"

"because it is one more step toward the advancement of human relations"

"because I had sex with too many virgins"

    all those are good.

I would say it is rewarding to help someone because it allows you to assume a simulated higher-up position and practice your probelm solving, leadership skills, interpersonal relations in a work setting and boost your confidence in your abilities as a professional.

It depends upon the context of the help. If it is a random act of kindness towards another, then it just feels good to have done something positive for someone else.

If we are talking in professional environment, then the reward is seeing that person grow. I am a part of that persons development by transfering my experience and knowledge. If this person shows that they value what I have offered through their efforts at self-improvement then that is my reward. It has made my investment of time worthwhile.

"The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others".

    Mahatma Ghandhi

Thinking of others buries the negative self-talk and other such troubling thoughts we have of our own circumstances. This is why it feels good. Like unconditional love in a new romance, all of your thoughts are for the other's happiness. Nothing else matters.

Loving someone, or helping someone, is the same as loving yourself finally. We feel the best in the absence of suffering from our troubling thoughts about ourselves.

Through helping someone else a person may find that they solidify their own knowledge and skills in the process.

Although, I think that the purpose of this interview question is to see whether the person replies with a selfish reason such as above, or something focused outward, like bettering the workplace or similar.

In an interview setting, I would say that I realize I am on a team with other people. If I do something to make my team stronger, I therfore benefit myself as well. There will be times when another person could do something to make my work stronger, and I believe a team will only reach its full potential when all members play to each others strengths, etc....

Compassion is vital to the human species, and helping another is one of the most human of acts.

Though society now often seems to dwell on the idea of "doing for yourself"--making it a virtue to be ruthless--studies in the business world show again and again that creating a strong culture within a company is the key to prosperity and longevity. Strength of culture depends on willingness of those involved to work together. Workers within a culture--and all human beings--strive for a sense of dignity and also control, and when they help out one another all benefit--all boats rise with the tide.

In a landmark book on business excellence, called IN SEARCH OF EXCELLENCE, published first in the 1980s, Thomas J. Peters and Robert H. Waterman write that "there was hardly a more pervasive theme in the excellent companies (that the authors studied) than respect for the individual...these companies give people control over their destinies; they make meaning for people...we are talking about tough-minded respect for the individual and the willingness to train him, to set reasonable and clear expectations for him, and to grant him practical autonomy to step out and contribute directly to his job."

In short, as relates to any kind of business (I'm sorry Lola that I don't know what field Rob is in) human to human contact, help, compassion, is the electricity that keeps the system going. I've seen this in my own field (I teach at the college level); in institutions where managers go the extra mile to help anyone who comes to them, there is a feeling up and down the line that everyone should be thorough and helpful to be a part of the crusade. And in institutions where managers are watching out for their own reputations, therefore being careful and volunteering little, the entire workforce takes its cue from this attitude, and much less is accomplished.

Finally, by and large, helping others is simply the right thing to do.

Rob is applying for a team lead position in a customer service company. He works in a call center, and he takes escalations. The promotion is to being responsible for a team of people who take calls in the entry level position (the people who pass on the escalations).

the people he is refering to helping are the customers, I think.....

these are such great answers! thank you all

I like helping people because they have funny accents and I like hearing 'thank you' in all of them.

OK, I was going to go with something more philosophical:

"Because when they were in need, a kind person helped them and this is an opportunity to be kind and gracious in return."

But the nature of the job, which suggests he's likely to be dealing with irate people, might require something like this:

"Being kind and helpful with one person will result in two happy people."

My fiance is in the same boat and takes escalation calls for biotech products(PhD in molecular biology). I would say more along the lines of
"In helping our customers, it not only benefits their project and goal, but shows we are a company worthy or coming to for help/needs. When we lead the customer in the right direction, be boost not only their moral, but the moral of our team and our company. As customers begin to realize they can rely on our skills and understanding in the field they will become return consumers. In turn, profits will rise and we have helped both the customer AND our corporation."
Something along those lines. They want to see that you care about the person you're helping, as well as how you're going to help the company. Best of luck to Rob!

too, just said it, but I was thinking along those lines also..

A lot of times, helping someone else is the only way to thank someone for helping you.
