Default Lush hennas.. anyone used them before?

I stopped using chemical beauty products a year ago completely, so I haven't dyed my hair in an entire year, so it's back to it's natural color- cool mousy boring medium brown. I want to dye it darker with reddish highlights and make it really shiny, so I want to try the hennas from lush.

Which one should I use?? I think it's between brun and marron, but i dont know for sure.

    my haircolor picture is here:pdxblackbook.com/gypsy

I've had a few friends try them and were unhappy with them. Although, one that kind of liked them insisted the others weren't doing it correctly.

Either way, I found another site where henna is muuuuch cheaper. I'm going to order henna and indigo so that in combination my hair will be black. I'm trying to phase out chemical hair dye and I only recently found out you can do a pitch black color with out chemicals. I'm not on my home computer with the site saved so I'll have to add it later.

ETA: I checked out the pics and I love your hair color how it is. I wish henna would give me exactly that shade. I'd love for a dark brown but I'm naturally blonde and pretty hair-stupid. That is not mousy. I'm hoping to eventually start putting some highlights in my hair to lighten it up a bit.

Is it like a paste? Just get some henna powder, mix in hot water and maybe a little coffee if you want a more mahogony color, and an egg for deep conditioning. Gloop it all in your hair for an hour, rinse it out, and you're good. No need for fancy pre-mixed pastes that probably do have weird chemicals in them.

They are solid bars that you have to mix with hot water, just like you're talking about. It's Lush so no weird chemicals:
Fair Trade Cocoa Butter (Theobroma cacao), Indigo Henna (Indigofera Tintctoria), Red Henna (Lawsonia inermis), Ground Coffee, Nettle Powder (Urtica dioica), Irish Moss Powder (Chondrus crispus), Clove Bud Oil (Eugenia caryophyllus), *Citral, *Eugenol, *Geraniol, *Citronellol, *Limonene, *Linalool, Perfume. *Naturally occurs in essential oils
I am not pro-henna because it can interact with other things in a bad way, so I don't have a lot to say on the subject. I know there is a vegan hair salon in Portland and I bet they would know a lot about non-chemical, non-harmful hair coloring options.

Ok, I'm totally curious. I really haven't heard anything bad at all about henna so I suppose its wise to try and see both sides before I do it. What kind of things can it interact with?

My only real concern about henna is that it won't lighten if I try to put highlights in my hair sometime in the future. I'm not sure if it lightens like regular dye.

I was told by my hairdresser that if Henna went on my hair they could never colour it afterwards, they would have to let it grow out first.

Which makes me think :Henna? Henna for life. Scary.

I only use henna on my hair.

DEFINITELY do a patch test on hair from your brush if it has ever been chemically processed. And know that you have a 50/50 chance of having to have it grow out if you want to chemical process later.

I use henna from hennaforhair.com. It's pure. They have an instruction thing on their site and it's super easy to use. I apply mine with a spatula. Well, I have a friend apply mine with a spatula, ha. It's cheap, great conditoner, thickens your hair, and gives dazzling shine.

You can get any color you want from natural products, though you need to know what you are doing or have someone else do it. DIY hair stuff is not for those who do not research.

Henna to go red is super easy though. If you read the instructions on their site you will be fine. It is pure good quality henna. I would suggest putting some essential oil in it though, henna smells like wet hay and it sticks around for a couple days if you don't.

No good. I used Caca Noir (for blue black hair) and I swear, my roots barely stayed black for a week. I really had no idea that it was possible for henna to "not take" but I guess it is. The remainder of the color bled out by the third week- just not worth it, especially with such a pain in the ass application. If you're looking for a less damaging option then most dyes, try ammonia free (colorsilk at drugstores- it's $3!!! works great) or mix your own from a beauty supply shop using a very low volume developer (20 volume still works well without damaging hair).

I've been thinking about henna too but I was wondering if I'd get a natural red from it. Most of the henna I've seen looks really fake, but I'd love an all-natural red tone that actually looks natural.

I'm curious about the bad side of henna too, Susan. I haven't heard about this. What's wrong with it?

^ it can make your hair fall out if you use regular hair dye over henna.

Poopie. I was worried it might not be able to be dyed over or cause issues with the chemically dyed part. I know black hair color is never going to really come out of blonde but I'm thinking I could at least lighten/fry up a few highlights so that I could start slowly doing my roots a dark brown instead and hopefully it wouldn't be obvious. I use Vivitone color and a 10 vol. developer because my hair is so light so its starting to not sound so bad. Last time I dyed I noticed a little bit more hair falling out at the root, not as much as when I bleached and majorly damaged it, but enough to make me think twice about the effects of dyeing.

I'm glad to find a fair description of the pros and cons of henna though. This definately requires some more thought.

What about the other way around? Is it any good on sparse greys?

Breakage will occur with a metallic (gradual) color, not so much with henna. The big problem with henna, is that it's frickin' impossible to get rid of the red, especially if you want to go lighter in the future. When a client tells me she's used henna, I will not use a permanant haircolor or bleach... However, I will use a demi permanent but I have to warn them that I cannot garuantee the service.

How much more damaging is just doing your roots monthly than coloring with henna? It seems like people can go years with just doing their roots as long as its not all over color. Am I correct? Mine doesn't really fade. I was looking at henna mainly because I thought it would be less damaging but I want highlights in a few months.

Amazing Kat, it depends on the type of color you're using. If you want to lighten or cover gray, a permanent haircolor or bleach must be used- in that case, henna will always be less damaging because it only coats the hair... Permanent haircolor opens up the outer cuticle of the hair, deposits color, and oxidizes while bleach blows open the cuticle and "dissolves" color molecules.

If you're going darker or just want to create a tonal change, a demi permanent haircolor can be used most actually leave the hair in better condition than before you color. Like henna, the color only coats the hair... However, in this instance I always recommend a demi over a henna because you can achieve more predictable results, have a wider range of color to choose from, and will have more predictable stages of decolorization if you choose to highlight in the future.

I actually use both a permanent and a demi on my clients who need to lift or cover gray. I see them every 6-8 weeks and, as you mentioned, only apply the permanent color to the outgrowth. Previously colored hair will tend to change tone rather than fade... the ends will typically look brassy (especially in blondes) or just dull so I apply a demi permanent (1-2 shades lighter) that will counteract any unwanted tones and add shine back to the hair.

Hmm, I'm just dyeing my light ashy blonde hair to a natural black color. I figured just about anything would take well to my hair because its already so light. I've been using a permanent color and a 10vol developer.

I'm going to have to look into using demi permanent haircolor. I wash my hair maybe twice a week so hopefully it will stay longer. Sometimes I wish I could go to cosmo school just to personally understand all the things you can do with hair better. I'm quite ignorant about it but I've heard tons of contradicting information on whats will yield the best results. I figure how much can I screw up black hair color on my roots though?

I'm slowly learning but thank you sooo much Mia M! Through this board I've learned to nurse my dry hair back to health with jojoba oil and a few of the protein treatments. My hair hasn't felt this good since before I bleached the red out about a year and a half ago (which was a huge mistake because I look freaky with natural blonde). I did notice I'd been losing a bit more hair at the root and that the little roots on the end of the fallen out hair were practically non-existent so hence I've been freaking out and pondering if my hair color is causing it (or just my stress) and looking into other options.
