Default Poll: Is a double major beneficial?

So, I have a dilemma. I'm debating between a single major with a minor, or a double major with a minor. The difference in time is 1 year of school (7 classes).

I'm wondering if it is actually beneficial in the marketplace to have two majors, or if the extra year is a waste of time. Here are my options:

BA of Finance with a Minor in Spanish

    or

BA of Finance and BA of Accounting with a Minor in Spanish

I'm planning on doing some sort of post-grad study, probably either a master of finance or law school. Some people say I need the double major and it will give me a great advantage, some say it won't. Opinions?

The spanish will be useful with anything, if you can actually speak it fluently.

That was...really not helpful at all. I'm doing a spanish minor regardless.

sowwy, I didn't wead the hold ting, how am I supposed to with that avatar inches to the left? And why isn't your gorgeous bod in chat?

Depends on the majors. I question how much the accounting would be useful in addition to the finance.

Keep in mind that you might not be able to get all the classes you need due to classes filling and such. My uncle was once triple majoring (computer science, math, and electrical engineering, it would have only been a year more), but ended up graduating with just compsci because he couldn't get into all the classes he needed, and many were part I and II that were only offered in the spring and fall, respectively.

If you think that you can do it, go for it. I'm not trying to be a sourpuss or anything. Good luck!

Thanks hatshepsut! I don't *think* that will be a huge problem, as both of the majors are restricted, so there are less people trying to get into the upper division classes. That definitely is something to think about though.

I'm really just trying to figure out if employment-wise it will be worthwhile, like, will having the extra major give me more opportunities/better edge?

Make sure you don't exceed unit maximums if your university has one. I'd really like to add another major but I'll be over the unit cap to finish it so they won't let me. I think a lot of your classes and basics would overlap its not like its a major in Biology and one in Ancient Art.

I avoid business/finance/accounting industry stuff like the plague so I can't give you specific information on if it will be worthwhile or not for you. I'm surprised more schools don't offer an some sort of combined Finance/Accounting major. I'm an interdepartmental History/Art History major. I do almost all of the upper division requirements for both minus a few very similar ones.

Another thing that you can do is postbacclaureate if you're planning on sticking around the area of your university. That way, you can get your first degree, start working, and finish your degree by attending night or weekend classes. These options are available at big universities.

No. If you're going to get an advanced degree anyway, then focus your efforts on doing WELL in undergrad, work smart, not more, and get your real work/professional education done in grad school. I think these days double majors are impractical- most employers will look more kindly upon advanced degrees (MA, MBA) than a double BA.

^^^ Yup, exactly what I'm doing to solve the fact that I can't add an additional science major nor do I want to restart everything to go back and take all those intro courses. Sometimes going this route and getting a slightly unrelated major (such as in the case of History for med school) will show that you are more well rounded as a person and admissions or employers love that.

The double major will give you more opportunities and a better edge over other people who have only done a single degree when you are looking for a job. Business fields are usually competitive so I think having the double major will give you a certain advantage for employers.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

IMO, it can help or hurt you. It's a benefit if the two majors are related which they obviously are in this case. It can make you more attractive to potential employers as you would have cross functional skills. But it can also hinder you if employers believe you to be overqualified. Especially when the economy is poor, a lot of companies would rather settle for someone who can fill the position cheaply than pay more for someone who has more education behind him/her.

That said, I'd vote for the two majors. It's only one extra year and opens up so many more opportunities for you.

Oooo Collette makes a good point. I think most people will automatically assume two is better than one but I think much more such as granting institution go into hiring decisions.

The only way I could see it being beneficial is if it got you into the grad school you wanted.

    Thanks ladies!

Amazing Kat: Exceeding maximums wont' be an issue, as both majors are in the business dept, and have the same upper division requirements (except for the classes specifically for the major, which is an extra 7 classes to do the accounting major)

Scarlett: They are pretty similar, both in the business dept. Main difference is accounting focuses on, well, accounting practices (businesses, taxes, etc), and finance focuses on investments.

Collette: That's what I've heard/am worried about. I want to make sure whatever I end up doing is beneficial, and I certainly don't want an extra year of school if it's not helpful.

Aussie: That's another thing I've been considering. I may be more valuable if I'm qualified for multiple jobs in a company, even if I never end up doing them.

I've also considered focusing on tax law in law school, which would make the accounting degree valuable...but if I don't...I still wanna make sure it'd be worth getting.

Thanks Bob, there's a fine line between overqualified and under qualified I've found. I should clarify, I want a job in finance (investments and such), not accounting. However, I wonder if an accounting degree isn't more versatile. Gah. I hate school.

If you want to do something splashy for your grad apps, what about an Honours degree in on of the majors?
The honors program at my school is REALLY frightening. I tried it my freshman year and I'm lucky I didn't fail. Plus, for some reason the honors program requires a ton of extra non-required classes in order to graduate from it, so it would take a LOT longer (like, 3 general ed classes in one subject when only one is required to graduate).

Actually, I do agree with Scarlett. If you're going straight into the job market, it makes sense. If you're not, it probably isn't necessary when all is said and done. However, I do still believe interviewers generally look favorably at people who appear to be more well rounded (at least that's been my experience in business). Whether those skills ultimately get put to use is debatable but if the aim is to get hired, I still think it's a good move.

Can I come do honours at your school scarlett? Seriously, ours is ridiculous, and the teachers are snooty pricks. (I had a honors calc prof that REFUSED to ever finish a demo problem, the ENTIRE SEMESTER, I'm lucky I had a boyfriend to tutor me, and I still got a C)
