Default Plastic Surgery for Old Guys

Excuse me. I presume you folks are all experts on plastic surgery.

I am an old fat white guy. Nothing special. I have a colorless mole on my face, I suppose I ought to get that removed. I also have jowls. I have seen worse, but mine are something I think about from time to time.

Ought a "civilian" consider plastic surgery? Does the fact it is so minor means I ought to do it (just a little thing), or not (no great improvement is to be expected).

As I am fifty, I suppose my skin is not all it once was. Is that a factor? How would my jowls do as I age further?

What do you think? Should a regular ol' non-dancer bother with getting work done?

I wouldn't think dancers make up even half of the plastic surgery clientelle. If it would make you feel better then do it for yourself, doing it for anyone else I think is a bad idea.
Skin still renews itself at any age, sometimes slower as we age, but not at 50.

I'm a firm believer that everyone should have a plastic surgeon on speed-dial.

That aside, there's no one that would be able to assess your situation better than a doctor. Call up and make an appointment for a consultation.

At least get a consult. A little freshening up can do wonders for nearly anyones appearance. A surgeon will be able to answer your questions regarding further aging of the skin and such. I know that a lot of people are getting lasered as follow up after surgical procedures because it really helps the results last and is much less expensive.

It sounds as if it would help your self confidence which is one of the most attractive things about a man.

I say go for it. It obviously bothers you if you even took the time to write this post... so why not fix something that makes you unhappy?

I don't have my plastic surgeons on speed dial. I have them on retainer.

To the OP: I'm not entirely sure what your objective is. Do you want to look better or younger or what you perceive to be more "normal?" It's important to decide this before you go in for a consult because it's the first question the surgeon will ask you. What result are you looking for?

This will also guide your research on plastic surgeons. The best investment you can make is taking the time to find the right surgeon for the procedure(s) you want.

A few general rules about plastic surgery that you might find helpful:

    1. It will be more expensive than you think.

    2. The physical toll on your body during recovery will be greater and more prolonged than you think.

    3. Your body will hurt in ways it's never hurt before.

Please also be aware that any surgery carries a risk -- from a less-than-ideal outcome to the really bad outcome. It's very rare, but it does happen.

Finally, major plastic surgery is essentially a process of doing damage to the body and then allowing it to heal into the ideal result. It's best to think of it this way so you don't wake up with the tube down your nose wondering why in the hell you feel like you just got hit by a Mack truck.

I just had a mole removed from my chin. It was hideous and i cut it shaving all the damn time. Paid $300, done in 15 minutes. Now it just looks like another one of my hockey booboos.

Did you get it done at the dermatologist or a plastic surgeon?

She was a doctor, I don't know truthfully if she was either of those. Her clinic was all cosmetic type procedures, but of a more minor nature...laser hair and vein stuff, peels, whatnot. Didn't see anything about lipo, facelifts and the like.

I say if it bothers you, get it done. But make sure you reseach and pick a good doctor. While lifting a some skin here and there may sounds simple, it's not as easy as it looks and the wrong doctor can make you look like an alien.

I'm a civilian and I have fake boobs. I'm a big fan of plastic surgery. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd get an extreme makeover, you bet! (But if I don't win the lottery, I won't live my life miserable about the reflection in the mirror. I'm not obsessive over it.)

Yes, the age of one's skin is a factor in both what results you can expect, and in the healing process. But as long as you're healthy, don't have a tendency to form keloid scars (raised scars) and don't smoke, then you should be fine.

Don't forget about less invasive procedures, too. A facelift will get rid of your jowls, but if you're not prepared to go quite that far, look into the Titan laser for the face, which will tighten the face over the course of a few months. It'll be less expensive and, yes, less effective than a facelift, but it will still HAVE a noticeable effect and can be done repeatedly.

You can also do things like face peels to remove fine lines and freshen your skin, copper peptides to regenerate your skin (this is a nightly skin treatment), Botox to help remove crow's feet and forehead lines, and fat-grafting, where they use your own fat and put it back in your face to restore a youthful appearance, such as at the temples and around the eye sockets where the fat pads tend to slip downward with age.

These things all cost money and aren't permanent (but then...no plastic surgery IS permanent, or we could all just buy the ability to look 20 our whole lives) but they have an excellent track record and aren't terribly expensive, especially the face peels, which you can do yourself at home for about $5 each (as opposed to $200+ at the dermatologist).

Thank you all. I think I will do a consult when I am next in the US. Then I will think about it. If I decide to do anything, I will get it done in Thailand. (Ah, the life of an international man of mystery!)

At least I ought to get that mole zapped.

Depending on how much weight you're packing, you might want to try slimming down first, to see if that has any positive impact on your face/jowls.

    Good luck, brother.

^ There are ways, aside from surgery, to look younger. Hell, I still get carded buying alcohol.

CE is correct about losing weight. It makes a huge difference in your general appearance and will make a big dent in the jowl problem. The more you slim down, the better -- I'm currently just under my college weight -- but you don't have to go to extremes. It's also so much healthier for you, and you will actual feel much better as your heart is not perpetually working overtime.

You mentioned you were a "white guy" in a phrase with other pejoratives, so I'm guessing that you may be very, very white. White guys look better when they have some color. It's not uncommon for men around here to go to tanning salons, but if that's not your particular flavor of vodka, there are a couple of very good tanning lotions that will not turn you orange or some shade not found in nature. Try anything made by Clarins for Men from Paris.

The two other major aspects of your appearance that affect your perceived age are hair and skin condition. If you are graying or gray, there are easy ways around that, but get it done professionally (note: some women like a dash of gray). If your skin is heavily wrinkled or in poor condition, go in for a facial and discuss the options open to you to improve your skin's appearance. There is everything from microdermabrasion to Botox to full-scale plastic surgery. If you already have a dermatologist, you could ask him or her, but you can get a wider range of less expensive options speaking with people who are specialists in making your skin and face look better.

    Good luck!

Also, you should consult with the surgeons you're actually going to use. If you're going to have the surgery done in Thailand, have the consult done in Thailand. Each surgeon has his own particular specialties and abilities, and you want to make sure you go to one whose reputation and qualifications are outstanding, no matter where you go. It's not like visiting one is as good as visiting another, not by any means.

    Your process should be:

    1. Figure out what, specifically, you want to achieve with your look. Fewer wrinkles? Tighter skin? Less fat under the chin? Research the risks, outcomes and realistic results of the procedures you would have to achieve the look you want.

    2. Research surgeons who are board-certified and have an excellent reputation for providing those procedures.

    3. Go to a consult with them and look at their before-and-after pictures. Get an idea of their bedside manner and how concerned they are about achieving the result you want. Some doctors are arrogant pricks who care more about the money than you. You don't want to end up with a surgeon like that, and the way you're going to figure out what kind of person they are is via the consult.

    3. If you like the surgeon, if they are board-certified and have an excellent record, if you and he (or she) are on the same page as far as accomplishing the results you want, and if you have thoroughly prepared yourself psychologically and practically for your healing time and final results....then have the thing done.

Yep, I'm one of those women who loves gray hair on a man. And I don't even mind a few lines and wrinkles. I think it makes a man look distinguished. What does look bad, at least IMO, is a guy with a tight stretched bad face lift or eye job. Yuck.

Well, of course. Bad work looks appalling on anybody.

A few lines are good. Wrinkles are best in laugh lines, I think.

May I suggest the Yanhee International Hospital in Bangkok? They are amazing for quailty and service. The hospital is famous across Asia. I just got back from there. I, too, suggest getting your consultation with the doctor you want to get the surgery from. Good luck!

didja know if you tape a small piece of cotton soaked in apple cider vinegar to your face when you sleep for a couple consecutive nights, your mole will fall off in layers?

I did it for a few nights and my mole flattened out and shrunk in diameter. I could have made it smaller, but I was okay with how it looks now.

so, hockey bobby-- maybe you spent $296 US more than you had to

Yeah maybe, but I get another cool scar out of the deal...and I've already got a great bullshit story to go with it. You can never have enough corroborating evidence when you are asserting that you are the greatest hockey player known to mankind.

Yeah, the snash was all classic vintage porn. I only kept it for years because The Angel of the Century absolutely adored it. But when I told her I would let her shave it off, she decided that would be more fun than anything else.

I look so dramatically different without it that I had to do a new series of studio shots. I will probably post those some time this week. And change the avatar again.
