Default Mother Nature is striking back !

The number of sharks has decreased but the number of shark attacks has increased. The most likely reason is overfishing of the earth's oceans. Sharks have to eat and when fish are scarce they go closer to land and eat guess who ?
    US !
Australia has seen a noted increase in attacks. So has Florida. There was just one today off San Diego where shark sightings; let alone attacks are extremely rare.

Another reason could be an increase in waterfront property residents/ tourists.

Man, I swear everytime I reassure someone that it's safe to swim in Australian waters there's another shark attack. And what's with people afraid of Australia in particular, if it was that bad would we have survived? Sorry, that was a bit rantish, i just woke up.

Well, they don't really EAT us... they bite us, realize that we taste like ass, and move on... usually leaving the victim to die.

Are you saying : More people in the ocean = increased likelihood of getting attacked; or something else ?

More people in ocean= more shark attacks ( target rich environment, ya know). Greater number of attacks, if not greater percentage of people attacked. If for example, odds of getting shark attack are 1:1000, if you double the number of people in the ocean, you can expect double the number of shark attacks . More people taking precautions can tilt the odds more in favor, but not completely mitigate the odds.

I believe it is a mixture of more targets of mistaken opportunity and over-fishing.

There are a lot of balances that are tipping today.
