    Default Shark Attack

They're not sure what sort of shark it was. At first, they said Great White, but someone also mentioned Tiger Shark. This makes me really sad for his family and for the guy who died. That's a terrifying way to go and his family will have to deal with how he spent his last moments. It also freaks me out because my dad used to do Triathalon's and regularly did a lot of swimming in that area.

I just posted about this and increased shark attacks in general on Member Boards.

It was probably a great white. Great Whites are known to 'taste' and spit out humans. They are also known to strike from below, so you never see them. Tiger Sharks, however, rarely pass on anything that could be considered food. And they typically "bump" their victim before striking...so you have warning.

And, this is why, everyone, I refuse to swim in CA (or let my daughter) and Florida. The only "wild" water I will let the kids swim in is in the Keys...where no shark is going to swim up. Rays...I can handle...sharks? No way.

It's sad, though. He must have been so terrified.

    Poor guy.

Shark attacks are really so rare, even in Florida and California. I've been surfing and scuba diving for years. I have been circled once while I was out way too far from the break, and see sharks all the time when diving. Tiger sharks are really the only ones to worry about. If you see one, you have to get out of the water immediately. They actively stalk humans. Like VG said, whites (and most other sharks) don't like the taste of people.

^ dude it'll be ok. Carry a diver's knife. If a shark gets in your face, stab them in the eye. Seriously. Surfers know that when a shark attacks you, your best chance of escape is gouging it's eyes.

    Is that comforting?

It's still icnredibly rare. Compare it to your chance of dying in a car accident.

Supremely comforting. I'm never going in the water again. Okay, maybe a pool.

Actually, VS, am getting some recommendations for dive locations for my checkout dives this weekend. I don't think I can swing an Island trip--cost, timing--but I'm thinking of going back to Key Largo. I liked the vibe at Pennakamp.

^ Or getting struck by lightening...or winning the lottery.

But, why risk it? I won't go fishing in a lightening storm...and I don't really waste money on the lottery...so why go play in a place where you have no control? Not for me. No way. Just have never been able to feel comfortable swimming in the ocean...especially in water where you can't see jack shit (ie. california).

I can understand that - but surfing and diving is so fun! It's worth the risk for me.

If a shark attacks go for its eyes or punch it in the nose. Seriously, it's a very vulnerable spot. The key is to FIGHT LIKE HELL ! Sharks don't like to fight for a meal and prefer weak and vulnerable prey.

According to the latest stats, while the number of sharks is declining; thanks mostly to finning; the number of shark attacks is INCREASING. Most scientists think it's a result of over-fishing. As the shark food supply declines; they are moving closer and closer to shore. A number of studies showed that surfers on short boards looked like seals to sharks from below i.e. the silhouettes were very similar.

I've scubadived all over the world and encountered different shark species. It's disconcerting, yes, but if you sink to the bottom and be perfectly still, they go on their way. I would not attack or provoke them, that is a battle you won't win.

Sharks are attracted to surface animals and most attacks occur to swimmers or surfers, rarely divers.

That's so awful about the San Diego swimmer. It hits home when it's a place where you are familiar and have actually swam. I lived on the Central Coast for a number of years and this attack blew me away because I swam and kayaked in those waters practically every week in college.

I've never felt that the ocean was a hospitable place for humans -- sharks, electric eeels, jellyfish, puffers, sea snakes, coral, bacteria, all sorts of predators. I'll look at it on an HDTV, thanks.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

^I agree probably not the most intelligent decision. Better to play with sea mammals at depth . Swimming there frequently can make you careless.

It didn't stop me, though. I adore the ocean too much I just try to be aware and take precautions.

You can get bit by a rattler walking in the woods; or attacked by a cougar. You can get killed on the highway. I don't know if it's healthy to try and live in a risk -free coccoon. I think you should just use common sense and take reasonable precautions and ENJOY LIFE !

I know about rattlers, but they aren't here. Neither are cougars or even bears. Spiders, bees, wasps, rabid racoons and skunks - yes.

So yea, it most certainly was a great white shark... I have a fish phobia so I'm not in the water much... but it's stuff like this that keeps me from maintaining any sort of boarding skills. The ocean wants me dead. People weren't meant to hang out there.

No more black wetsuits for me. I'm going with neon pink from now on, so there's no mistaking me for a seal or sea lion.

^That's a good idea. So, how come we can make high-tech subs but no shark repellant?

There has to be a way to make shark repellant. Sharks have a kind of sixth sense through an organ called ampullae of lorenzini which are tiny pores filled with a substance that helps them detect electromagnetic fields in the water. If a marine biologist could figure out a frequency that could transmit through water safely that is unpleasant to sharks, there could be devices off the coastlines where humans swim that could deter sharks. The problem is, I dont know if there IS a frequency that deters sharks, but if they have the sixth sense to detect electromagnetic fields, it must be because they need it to locate or avoid certain things in the ocean.

I was obsessed with sharks when I was younger... btw. I grew up in Florida, and swam in the ocean regularly, way over my head, in murky waters (the gulf coast is NOT crystal clear, it's grey-blue) with no problems at all. The only marine life I ever encountered in my 10 years of living and swimming in the beach in Florida are dolphins. Honestly. I ran into dolphins when I was swimming once, they were swimming parallel to the beach, I saw their fins at first and thought they were sharks but then they jumped.. it was really cool.

I still do get freaked out though, but since I know to not wear contrasting colors (no dark swimsuits against skin, white, tan, yellow, pink light colors that blend are better), no jewelry (light and sparkly things attract them since they don't have good eyesight), and dont go in the water when you're on your period/have any wounds that might bleed... I've been fine.

The chances of getting attacked by a shark are still lower than getting in a car accident though.

Are the coasts of new zealand more populated by sharks than the coasts of florida?? I've never been able to surf in florida because the waves weren't big enough, but i definitely want to try in NZ, but I think surfing is riskier than swimming when it comes to sharks, because you really do look like a seal.

I don't swim in the ocean anyway. Fish fuck in that water.
