    Default low body temp

so i've had a cold this week. at one point i took my temp and it was 96.5 .. no fever.. but isn't that low???

so i took it again, mutiple times in the next couple days. it's been around 96.0 each time.

    wtf?

is this normal? ................................ i mean, i'm feeling a bit better.

i don't get it. is my temp usually this low and i never knew?

anyone else get low temps like this?

    what gives?

and BTW i bought a new thermometer .. thinking that was the problem .. and the new one is giving the same readings.

If you feel fine or better at least I wouldn't worry. 98.6 is an average and people will vary but usually by no more than 1 degree either way. Lots of digital thermometers tend to read a bit low too. Also taking your temp orally, rectally, or in the ear can cause temp changes but usually by no more than 0.5. Time of day and menstrual cycle can all change your temp too. I have heard that about 97 is the cutoff for hypothermia. Your only 0.5 below that though so maybe your thermometer or place you are taking it from is causing a slightly lower reading

Either way, I'm not a doctor but your temp is slightly cool even if you take into account other factors. I hope you get better though and that it doesn't get any lower.

Wow...okay so I am not alone? I wonder if this is normal, too. Even at my doctor's office my temp comes out low, but they always say "Oh, I'll just put 98.6 because these readings aren't that accurate"

Thanks for the tender loving state certified carelessness, Nurse Negligent.

Mine seems to like to stay between 95-96, and as crazy as it sounds...I can *feel* when I'm at 95 vs 96 because I start to feel clammy and a little out of it and it's like I can feel my heart beating in my chest, like that feeling you get right before you throw up.

My doctor (not that R.egistered N.utball) said that 95 is hypothermia, but that everyone's body is different. Some people are hypothermic at 95, some at 93. It all depends on your body composition/chemistry.

Do you have any thyroid issues or take any medication? I know certain sleeping pills/anti anxiety meds can make you have low temps.

If it's constant, it's usually related to thyroid.

My body temp is always very low. Usually it hovers around 96.5 ish, but can drop to 95.8 occasionally. When I have a fever, my temp is 98.6. If I have a temp in the 99's or 100's, I go to the hospital, because that means I am very sick.

Which sucked in school, because the onyl way the nurse sent you home is if you had a fever. So I could be feelign very ill, but she wouldnt call y mom to come get me cause she said I wasnt sick enough cause my temp would be normal.

I had the same exact thing happen to me. They said I wasn't sick. And then I threw up on the nurse. They never questioned me again.

eh.. it was 95.5 last night right before bed. it was 97.0 this morning.

maybe it's the "drop" right before you ovulate? because it's about that time.

i seem to remember once.. like 4 years ago.. asking a doctor about low body temp. i think i noticed this once before, and i'm pretty sure my thyroid was tested (blood test) and everything was fine. of course, that was a long time ago.

^ You can be borderline hypothyroid and still have symptoms. There's a syndrome for the low body temperature, but it's controversial. Wilsons, I think?

I always have low body temp too, even when I'm hot and sweating. My dr tested my thyroid levels and were normal so I'm not hypo, but I do have the symptoms.

i am in the 96s and 97s. i have yet to break a basal body temperature (BBT) of 98, except when i have a fever.

below 95 you should get looked at. the occasional 96 is within normal limits.
