Default Is there a doctor in the house?

I went to the walk in clinic the other day for this wheezing cough I've had. They said it was most likely something to do with my asthma, but they took x-rays as well and said there were some spots on my lungs that could do with a dose of antibiotics. OK, whatever, they're diagnoses are usually confusing.

But they ran bloodwork to check my sed rate and white blood cell count and everything and the next day they phoned saying "Your kidney function is low, drink lots of water and come back in 2-4 weeks to get it checked".

Unfortunately they called my house line, which I never answer so my Dad got the message. I've told them repeatedly not to call that number and now I'm going to remind them that it's illegal to give out information to a 3rd party which will hopefully get them to stop once and for all. I hate for him to get any information on my health that I don't give him because he's a really paranoid person and blows everything out of proportion.

So, I was thinking the other day, I drank an entire bottle of Mayberry wine on Tuesday night. Could this be what made my kidney function appear low when the bloodwork was drawn on Wednesday morning? Should I go down there and ask them when I yell at them for giving out my private medical information?

The office broke the law by giving out your medical information. Any place that would be outrageous enough to break this confidentiality act would make me wonder about their other inadequacies. Wow.

You'd really need blood work results to be read in order to have confirmation of problems. Actually, then more tests. Unless you have diabetes, a genetic problem, are taking a med that is toxic to your kidneys, or have had trauma, at your age (assuming under 65!) you should not be with a problem. You'd see edema, have breathing probs, etc. (some major symptoms) if you did. You could be damaging your liver, though, with that kind of drinking. You'd not see that for a few years, though, either.

I'd not trust any health care clinic that didn't have the wits to follow HIPPA, though. A lawsuit waiting to happen.

P.S., I'm a nurse (and soon-to-be-nurse practitioner student!), not a doctor, just FYI.

What I'm concerned with is the fact that I'm on medication that could potentially cause a toxic interaction. Nobody seems too concerned with this though. I guess because the dosages are low. Maybe I should just change my medications.

Thanks for the advice. They really aren't a bad place ... just over taxed. Too many people, not enough staff.

yeah but I've been told by several people that I should just tell them that the number is no longer valid because they won't listen to threats.

Unless you are under 18 or have given them explicit permission, they cannot reveal any medical information. They cannot leave a test result on voicemail...somebody else could pick it up. They cannot say every thing is ok, follow up in 6 months. They can only say, "Please have TheTempest call Dr. X"

    I say file a complaint.

Now, let's focus on you. When they said your kidney function was low, what exactly did they mean? Your BUN and creatinine were high? Your kidneys were not functioning quite normally? Without knowing your health history and meds, I will assume you are young and healthy. Likely you were dehydrated, which can alter your numbers somewhat. I would suggest being very particular about keeping well hydrated and having the labs rechecked in a month or so. If there is a continuing trend, request a referral to a nephrologist for further evaluation.

They called today and claimed that they don't have a HIPPA form signed by me. Which isn't true as far as I know. But I will go and clarify the information ASAP.

I am thinking of going and collecting my medical records. That will give me the actual test they performed and the readings for my own edification. I am going to PM you about some other things, if you have a moment.

Even if you haven't signed a form, they still cannot release your information without your permission.
