Default Anybody here going to the Rainbow Gathering?

I've wanted to go ever since I heard about it. I wonder if I might meet any SWers there this year!

The Rainbow Gathering is a totally free, non-commercial gathering of people. We invite all people to come camp with us in a magical mountain meadow in Wyoming, chop firewood, haul water, cook food and participate in workshops on non-violent direct action, yoga, alternative healing, and make music, create art and dance until your feet fall off.

I've never been to a Rainbow Gathering. Or Burning Man. I HAVE been to about 35 Grateful Dead shows.

My hippie days were so fun...

the gathering lasts about 2 months, give or take. There are three stages of every gathering- first, there is seed camp, where the older hippies and motivated younger ones go and build everything, toilets, stages, trails, designate places for main circle, etc. Second, there is the main gathering I guess, with the peak point being July 4th, where everyone gets together and prays for peace. The week of July 1-7th is where the most people will be at the gathering, with numbers in the tens of thousands at most national gatherings. After the 7th, there's still another 3 or so weeks before the gathering is completely over, and it's the third part of it, where everyone cleans up, and leaves the forest looking completely untouched. Some people come just for clean up because they like it so much, others come just for seed camp.

White drugs and synthetics are discouraged at rainbow gathering, as is alcohol. There is "a-camp" for people who want to drink alcohol. Marijuana, mushrooms, peyote and acid do go on, but they are definitely not the main focus of the gathering, the main focus is to gather for peace and live communally off the land. There are all sorts of camps for all sorts of people- yoga camp, bible camp, krsna camp, etc, as well as workshops- reiki work shops, fire spinning work shops, yoga workshops, jewelry making, whatever. If you have kids, there's kiddie village, the cleanest camp at the gathering with its own kitchen and water supply and babysitters. There's also calm, which is the medical services camp, they focus mainly on the naturopathic way of helping someone, but do have traditional medicine like tylenol available too. If there's an emergency, they have a vehicle ready to take a person to the nearest road and have contact with the local hospital to make everything as safe as possible.

burning man is not appealing to me because it puts a lot of stress on the earth. You have to pay to go to burning man, you have to haul in tons of water in plastic bottles and use the bathroom in porta potties. People fly from all over to go to burning man. burning man just seems like a sensual indulgence, you don't have to work hard to make it happen, it's already done for you, you just bring yourself, drugs and art.

rainbow gathering is completely dependent on you, you make it happen. you don't pay for it, and most people do not fly there, people hop trains, take buses, hitchhike, caravan on bikes, stuff themselves into van dwellings, cram as many people as they can into one car.

I don't feel the same way about BM. a primary aspect of it is 'leave no trace'. And I think that arguments for ecological damage as measured by where you're eliminating waste is not really part of that -- arguing that by pooping in the woods, instead of in a contained port-a-potty, you're leaving less of an environmental footprint... seems not a very convincing argument.

Also... people do journey in to BM over one month in advance to construct the city. Their labor shouldn't be devalued by the sheer number of people that participate in it.

However, Gypsy, RG sounds similar to AMF (Autonomous Mutant Festival). Ever been there?
