    Default Strange Craigslist responses

So, I am in the process of buying a house. We decided to close in July. I have put up ads on CL and FB to rent the room with its own bathroom. The responses I am getting sound really scamish to me. I am not renting to these people, but i just don't see how renting a room could be made into a scam, but yet I am totally getting that vibe. I am including 2 responses.

    Good Day,

My name is Sandra Martinez; I came across your advert on Craigslist.com and am extremely interested about the place for rent cos i see you are a very well kind hearted and easygoing person to get the place from....Please if you don't mind I will like to have answers to the following questions below:

i)I will like to have the rent fee per month plus the utilities.

ii) I will like to have the description of the Place, size, and the equipments in there.

iii) Also I will like to know if there is any garage or parking space cos I will have my own car come over.

iv) I will also be coming with some of my furniture, that is if it is allowed, like bed, book shelf cos I read a lot, shoe rank etc

    v) I will also like to know if I can make an advance payment ahead my arrival that will be as a kind of commitment that I am truly coming over and for you to hold the room down for me.

vi) If the #5 questions is YES, I will like to know the total cost for the initial move as in first month rent and if you accept deposit.

vii) I will like to know the major intersection nearest your neighborhood. Like shopping mall, bus line e.t.c LASTLY:I will like to know more about you and also I will like to have your pictures as for me to know how you look like. Here is all I can say about my self for now.

I am 26 years old and I work full time, Monday through Friday and have weekends off except for once a month. I was born and raised in Tucson Arizona, but presently in Amsterdam Holland on a business trip for more than 10 months.. I am a professional, A Computer Consultant and I deal in various kinds of computer applications and soft wares. I graduated in the Arizona State University (ASU) 4 years ago and I have my B.sc in Computer Science... I am not really a sports person, BUT I do love Hockey Games, I am a very out going person and fun to be with. I do play the organ and piano, and I do have BOTH piano and organ here at my house. I am not a drinker and I don't smoke and I don't do drugs. I would also like to go out with you on weekends and weeknights when I am free. I like going to movies, concerts, plays, I like camping, hiking, bike ridding, swimming, and I love to travel. I am a very dedicated individual who is totally committed to human development, friendly, very t! rust worthy and value relationship above anything. I am a laid back person, I love traveling, sporting and Enjoy meeting people around the world. I am an easy going person and look forward to meet kind hearted, loving and caring person that is very responsible and understanding, someone I can really get along with. I will take my time to get you one of my picture in my next mail for you to know how I look like, I am sure you will like me.

I am presently in Amsterdam, Holland and I will be moving to USA fully to live for the rest of my life and start a new life and set up my own business as a Computer Consultant ( I have my resume). I will be staying in your place as long as the lease is drawn.

I need answers to my 8 questions above as soon as possible so as to arrange for you to get the money prior for my arrival to retain and consider the room is mine.. I will be making this advance payment ahead my arrival so that you can be rest assured that this is real since I am not in the state presently. If you think I will be a good applicant to you and you are interested in renting the place to me NOTE: Kindly address all emails to me directly to my private email box at [email protected]

Thanks and have a good time.
    Warmest Regards,
    Sandra Martinez

The first one is very confusing - saying they are in Amsterdam for work and then saying that they'll be moving to the USA for good soon. Sounds like a scam. They'll probably send you a check and ask you to send back a portion of it to them - a common scam right now. Their English isn't great (which doesn't mean anything) but it seems to be the improper English of someone who is not a native English speaker which makes me think they may actually live in Amsterdam and were not born here as they claim. Definitely suspicious.

The second one makes me suspicious as well because 1. why would someone include physical attributes for a room for rent? and 2. they want you to take the ad down. You shouldn't be asked to take the ad down until you have the deposit and have met the person, in my opinion.

So yeah. I think those are not good ideas for renters.

    SCAM!
Here's what E and I did when we decided to look for person to lease out our extra bed/bath to.
Instead of posting, you can avoid the scams by looking the housing WANTED section. These are usually serious inquiries and you can read over them FIRST. This works well only if you're not in a huge rush. We weren't worried about it, so we took our time. We found an AWESOME roomate who I hope never leaves!

The second one sounds more legit though. You MIGHT want to contact her. Don't take the ad down though, unless you're going to go the route above. Some people just like to lay it all out, and want pics/measurements of the room to see if it's worth the money being asked to pay for. I know when we were renting before we wanted pics before we drove out to look at it.

That's a great idea... finding people who are actively looking themselves and then you can choose what they put out there... in addition, if THEY are also getting tons of posts from weirdos then they're probably grateful when someone sensible offers them housing.

I did email the second one. It was actually the first response i received. I didn't decide that it could be a scam until I got the other email. IDK, I emailed photos, but encouraged her to come check it out. I also suggested that if she wasn't here that she have a friend check it out.

Have you thought about putting an ad up at say your gym? Or are there any girls you work with that you trust??

I would rather get a rental from somebody I kind of sort of know than a total stranger....

I placed an add for a room to rent, and got 44 some responses. lol.

I emailed back to about 4 people, and only even gave one my number.

I'm really really happy with my renter, but be prepared to wade through a lot of trash first.

That first one sounds really, really suspicious.

If I were you, I would request all deposits be made by certified check/cashiers check only. After you get a lease signed (and credit checked) you can take rent however you want (just be sure to keep a receipt book!).

freaking... I can't stand those stupid money order scam people. They BOTH sound like scams to me. I use CL a lot to sell my stuff, find places to live, modeling jobs, etc, and I am so freaking sick of the scam people!! i get so excited when there's like 10 messages from an ad i posted selling my camera or whatever, and they turn out to all be from freaking west africa saying they're on vacation or on business in europe and will send a money order with extra money for shipping, blah blah blah. UGH! I can't stand it.

Awhile ago I was looking for a car in CL and there were listings for late model nice cars like Audis, Infinities, etc.. for like 4500. Usually there was some sob story like, "my son died in Iraq and it hurts me to sell it but I'm letting it go cheap because he was a nice guy".. always some weird shit like that. I emailed some of them just to see what's up and all the responses for the different cars came from the same email address, asking for a cashier's check for shipping from out of state. Same paragraphs long letter copied and pasted in each email. I sure hope nobody ever falls for this and gives these scumbags their money. CL postings aren't really moderated for authenticity so I think these lowlifes will be around for awhile looking to rip off their next victim.

The first response is something called "The Nigeria Scam"....Google it.
It's been going on for ages, I can't believe people still actually try to use that lame ass bullshit.
The others, who knows, people are just plain weird!

Ack! I am in the same city as you, and when we advertised a room for rent on CL as well, we got responses from the SAME EXACT PERSON (Sarah Martinez). It's a scam Shasta, ignore them! That response is identical to what we received.

Both are scams for sure. The Nigeria scams always involve supposedly European people who speak British English (so things like "advert" are red flags).
