Default Help me touch up my roots!!!

I can't afford to go get my hair colored right now and I have about an inch and a half of ugly brown roots showing....I look like fat trailer trash barbie right now... I really need to go buy some dye and do it myself, but I don't know how and none of my girlfriends do either....help?

I have an event to go to tonight that's really dressy and a lot of people I know will be there and I really am embarassed about how I look.

Do you normally get foils when you go to the salon? Foils and color? or Color only?

What was your natural color when you were a kid? I ask because I'm trying to determine if you're really a blonde (natural blondes who highlight tend to think they're way darker than they really are, IME) or if you're a brunette. If you could PM me pics of your hair, with a close up of the outgrowth area- perferably holding up your hair so I can really see the line of demarcation- that would be helpful.

Go to Sally Beauty Supply and buy:

Your dye (let Mia tell you which one)
    A bottle of 40-volume developer
A plastic bowl with a balance on it so it stays still
One of those narrow brush thingies for painting on hair dye

Mix all the dye with the developer; it'll tell you how much developer on the bottle. Make sure it's really mixed well. If you have a tendency to bleach orange like I do, you can add a little packet of Red Gold Remover (it's 99 cents at Sally's). Paint it on your hair while it's still dry and dirty, making sure you get thorough, even coverage. Leave it on for thirty minutes, check it, see if it needs more time, etc. Wash it out, condition it, and style as usual.

This is how I used to do it when I bleached my hair blonde at home. It cost about $10 every time. Oh, and I almost forgot, make sure you get some latex gloves, too. You don't want to stain your hands and that shit gets everywhere.

^^^ okay... It's 9am here and I got errands to run and leave for work mid afternoon- in case I you can't send me pics in time, and you're def sure you're a brunette, look for a high lift brown at Sallys. It should be able to get you up to four shades lighter. You should have to mix it with 2 parts developer to one part color.

You'll want to counteract as much warmth as possible (although you'll probably still be on the gold side) so look for a high lift with added blue, green, and if possible violet tones. You'll probably need to at least mix a blue and green together. I'd do equal parts... so you'd be 1/2 oz blue 1/2 oz green and 2 oz developer. You'll want to use the manufacturers recommended volume of developer, too. I know with Redken, you mix thier Hi-Lift with 20 or 30 volume, depending on how much lift you want to achieve. Kep in mind , the higher volume developer you use, the warmer your end result will be.

DO NOT be tempted by any high lift blondes!!! They're formulated to work with natural blondes and do not have enough pigment in them to counteract the warmth needed for lifting a natural brunette.

Have a friend apply the color for you. A tint bottle works best. He or she will want to part your hair and apply the color on the OUTGROWTH ONLY, using one hand to hold the bottle and the other to smear the color on the outgrowth (most likely a thumb). Overlapping color onto previously colored/lightened hair is not good.

Disclaimer: I work with professional Redken color ONLY. Every line is different so results will vary. You will still have a line of demarcation, your outgrowth should just be 3-4 shades lighter. You will still see warmth. If things don't turn out well, I take no responsibility. I've given the best advice I can with the information that has been given to me.
