Human rights, baby.
Are you an Amnesty International member yet?
not really, but I used to go to protests and stuff. I had friends who knew about them, and we made signs and shirts and buttons.
What in particular do you want to be involved with? You can google a lot of stuff these days.
I personally now believe the best way to be involved is one on one. Huge protests and campains don't really feel good, to me, but smaller things do.
There are some great volunteer activities out there, and if you volunteer in something you really believe in, that's the best kind of activist, imo.

lonelily.. i don't even really know what that is. perhaps you can educate me??

i'm really really against alot of things right now, but i'm trying to learn exactly what's going on so i can zero in and target it.
I used to be an environmental activist until I learned that my esteemed leaders lied as easily as any industrialist. So I backed off to "good steward" type advocaty.
I've been in groups to encourage community and professional benefit, but we wouldn't call that activism, I don't think.

These are the ones I'm the most well-versed in...If you're curious about the state of human rights in various parts of the world, I can send you links to various reports, etc. If you want to know how the injustices are (or aren't) handled, I can direct you to the various international tribunals currently working. If you want to search yourself, just google the topic and, usually, activist groups show up within the first page of results. Amnesty International is definitely the largest of these groups.

well as I understand it, 'operation chaos' is a reversal of political activism that was organized in the early stages of the primary campaigns ... where democrat / liberal minded voters registered as independents and cast votes for McCain in republican primaries ... which essentially scratched Mitt Romney and established John McCain as the republican nominee. The current flip is for conservative / republican minded voters to register as independents / democrats and cast votes for Hilary in democratic primaries ... which keeps the democratic primary battle between Hilary and Obama alive, and which will eventually result in chaos at the Democratic convention.

Operation chaos was big in the 60's as part of figuring out who the anti war protesters were and doing whatever it took to prevent them from protesting etc.
That's what I'm aware of though.

Maybe...I don't know?
I don't do protests/marches. I do a lot of volunteering though. My umbrella focuses are environmental sustainbility and international relations (not political, but not 'development'); I'm actually getting into a sort of mesh between the two, which is pretty cool. I started out volunteering at the local recycling centre and working on the protection of native plants in a local park...on the international front, I self-funded my first trip (teaching in Kenya), which then led to funded opportunities. I'm leaving for the Gambia in 6 weeks, actually!
There's so much opportunity out there- you just have ot kind of jump in to the areas that you feel most connected to. If you ever move back here, I can hook you up!![]()

People are not ruled by their memories.
I would like to do Habitat for Humanity. Right now I'm doing 'youth' stuff because that opportunity expires when I turn 30, but after 30, I'll be all over that.

I just looked at the HH site (Canadian version)...it says HH is a "non-profit, faith-based organization helping people build affordable housing at sites across the country." International site says it is a "ecumenical Christian housing ministry".
What does 'faith-based' mean? Is it like, "Christians get houses, heathens don't"? I generally avoid faith-based stuff as much as possible...any first-hand experiences with HH? I don't want to be a missionary.

no, it means Christians and heathens build houses for people in need, whether those people are heathen or Christian.
that's typically how direct-action faith-based ministries tend to work. and HH works that way as well, as one learns by viewing the FAQ page briefly.
Obviously I read the FAQ pages- I quoted them. So I should take their word as gospel (har), and not seek outside information? Is that your point? Do you have first-hand experience with HH?

I've had experience with Housing for Humanity. At least in the U.S., they are heavily dependent upon state, local, and federal housing funds to acquire the properties, if not the materials and admin costs. So they specifically cannot discriminate, not even ask about "faith," or their housing funds are in jeopardy.

It can be difficult to make a recently single man pay for sex when he knows that a quick trip to the local watering hole would secure at least one hard drunken tumble for far less cash. It is even more difficult when he is something of a dead ringer for James Bond as played by Daniel Craig and possesses the sort of awkard charm and confidence that brands a man like him as a lady killer.
