    Default Moving to San Diego...

    Hey all!
So the Navy has finally given my husband a set date for us to move. We'll be off Guam by the end of May and are headed for San Diego. I haven't been there since I was a little girl and have never lived there full time.
Can anyone tell me of any good areas of town to look for a place to live? I want to be close to a community college and LOTS of public transit. Any cool gyms and such would be neat to find out about. I know rent's expensive but the Navy will be paying a bunch of the costs for us. Any tips to point me in the right direction while I do my research is helpful.
I'm not so much into tips on where to work as of yet. I'll figure out how I feel about the strip club scene once I get there and see it for myself. Thanks a bunch and wish me luck!

I'm actually moving to La Mesa next month. It's cheaper than in the heart of the city and you get space (and covered parking, big for me), and it's slightly less expensive. THere are nice areas and bad areas. Grossmont college is out there and they have a new mall and a trolly.
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.

That's cool. How far is it from the city center, exactly? Does the trolly go to the city center or just around La Mesa? I don't drive at all but I may learn while I'm out there.

Pacific Beach is young with lots to do, and it's not far by bus to Mesa College which is Clairemont. Clairemont has some decent areas close to the school. Mira Mesa/Scripps ranch aren't particularly interesting, but are close to Miramar College. Ocean Beach is like a time warp to the hippie era.
I think there is a college downtown, but I have no idea where.

Mission Valley is centrally located. Nothing in SD has great public transportation, but if you don't mind waiting for busses you can get just about everywhere.

^^ I used to live in Clairemont. While it wasn't fancy, it wasn't dangerous and it is a little less expensive than other areas of town. And the location is great, takes like 15 min to get anywhere.

The Navy has some very new and very nice housing in Sera Mesa. There is a CVS right next door a small market that is going to open again soon. Mesa College is less then 2 miles away SDSU and SDU are less then 15 mis away. Most of the Sera Mesa area is very Nice.
As too Dancing here in the city limits San Diego is trying to make it go away with the rules. No Booze in Nude Clubs, 6 foot away while dancing. While on the floor or doing private dances must stay dress and they are suppose to be air dances. You are allowed to wear a lot less on the beach then in the club. I went to a club once and none of the gals where putting any work into it. They get on stage did a half harted 3 numbers and then got dressed and walked to every guy in the club and expected a dollar. I do have to admit that was 5 years ago but the city rules have not changed so the whole environment just seemed pointless to me. The City is in tight money problems so I do not know how tight they are being but the vice squad used to hit clubs 5 nights a week with tape measures to check the customs again it was so lame and of course the TV had to go with them from time to time to show us how they are protecting us. I have a neighbor that is a ex stripper and I was talking to her about it about 2 weeks ago and said that I do not know how she could have made a living in SD with out being a extras girl and she just said O I am a Hocker also Hell why not like it was nothing So be ware that the dancing scene may be a let down. If You live in La Mesa you are not to far from a Little Darlings in Spring Valley that is not in the city limits it may not be as bad.
I hope that this helps some

I grew up in La Mesa and I would not recommend living there unless you're into the suburban life style. It is mostly families and there are no clubs (save, Little Darlings) out there. I really enjoyed living in Hillcrest (which is way too expensive now) But I find you can still get reasonable housing the next neighborhood over in North Park or South Park. Also, City College downtown was where I went to school and I really enjoyed it. I never danced there but I always hung out at Cheetah's (nude - no alcohol) and even though the dances were mild the girls I knew still did fairly well there. You have to work a lot harder as the dances are cheap, but it is (or was) a very fast moving place. My friend worked somewhere called Risque (I think) and did well. I used to just drive to LA or fly to Vegas occasionally.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I did try CL but since its all ads, I just have no real point of reference. I'm thinking about looking into Pacific Beach (a few sailors I know are into that area) but I really wanted something easy to access the community college that's downtown. And of course, it has to be around teh Coronado/base area. What does OB stand for exactly?
Thanks for the transit map, by the way! That's the kind of stuff I'm into finding out about. That's perfect!
I'm still really unsure how much I'm going to want to work in the strip club scene there. I worked the SF/Bay Area for a while and in a couple of spots in LA. I know the laws in California and I'm not too keen on the idea of having to be licenced, either. Like I mentioned, I'm really just making a list of the clubs to check out once I get there and decide how I feel about it at the time.
Another question I have: is San Diego very bike-friendly? Are there bike paths on the downtown area streets or residential areas or is it a bit dangerous? Just wondering.
    Thanks again for the info!

Mira Mesa/Scripps are very safe, and pretty central if you'll be making any trips up to North County. They're also extremely self-sufficient, as in you almost never have to leave the area to go anywhere! D: However, they're CROWDED (esp MM), and in MM car theft happens a little too often for comfort, but mostly just to Japanese tuner type cars.

Clairemont is extremely central, pretty safe, relatively affordable, and just overall mediocre. Tierrasanta (right next to Clairemont) is VERY safe, very quiet, and pretty isolated while still being near the freeway.

"Near" East county (like Bella mentioned) does have the best housing prices. I would move out there except for school.

Everyone loves PB. It's near the beach but personally I don't really get the charm. It's crowded, trafficky, and there's no parking. However, one of my friends is currently renting a mobile home near the beach in Mission Bay wth two bedrooms and a back patio for only $800/month (amazing!).

Anyhoo, hope this native's input helped at all.

Oh yeah and all the strip clubs worth working at require a license. It's only about $200, you'll make that back in a night for sure, unless it's a really shitty night.

Yay! More maps! This is much better. I'll start cruising the sdreader.com to get a better idea of what goes on around town. Thanks, all, for naming all the names of parts of town. I'm starting to get turned on by the idea of Mira Mesa but I can't figure out how close to Coronado it may be.

Mira Mesa/Scripps Ranch are seven exits up from where the 15 freeway meets the top of the map. It's an average commute to Coronado, but not on I would do on the bus. If he has a car it's fine.

Downtown is really not that expensive either. I live in a studio in Little Italy for $925, and it's in a decent area. City College is super close too (you could bike there).
