Default Club 35 in central NJ now a music venue??

My band was offered a slot playing at Club 35 in central Jersey at a show an acquaintance of mine is putting together. I guess they are putting on shows now occasionally.

Has anyone been to any of these shows? I know there was at least one before. Is business that bad at the club that they are trying out as a music venue? I got the sense the dancers would still be there too, but that they were using both the upper and lower floors for music, which confused me a bit. Places like Double D's or Pussycat Lounge seemed to do it by dividing the club into two sections; I can't see how this would work without doing that.

If anyone who is familiar with the club wants to give me some info on the layout and how it might be used for music that would be cool. The guy putting it together said the larger stage and floor is similar in scope to what the old Birchill was like, which seems like a stretch. That venue was a very large, successful venue.

We're probably going to pass since the required ticket sales weren't too much less that what we'd need to sell to open Starland Ballroom. Unless a bunch of people on SW want to go and buy tickets from us! It's too bad, it sounded like it would be a cool show.

I've worked there as a dancer. They have a separate venue area upstairs from the strip club where they have music shows.

BTW I hear it's a very good venue for the music end.

    Thanks a lot BL!

The guy said for this show they were getting both the upstairs and downstairs for music, which struck me as odd. This was a Saturday too.

The other part that struck me as odd was selling 30 tickets @ 20$ each to play upstairs, or 50 tickets @ 20 each to play downstairs. Open bar for beer included, but still. Bands can move $1000 in tickets and get to play Starland Ballroom as local opener for a national act, so pushing that for a strip club doesn't seem very attractive. Have you ever noticed anyone going upstairs to check out the bands if they didn't come for the bands? Or have you by any chance ever seen anyone buy any merch, or seen any non-local bands play the venue?

I haven't ever worked there on a night when they had a band. I've only been there while travelling through. Sorry.

I rise from the dead and one of the first threads I see is about my club..LOL. Anyway, to answer some of your Q's Ody:
"Is business that bad at the club that they are trying out as a music venue? " During the weekdays, yes. I think this week is the first time they're both having a band play on a weekday (Wednesday) and downstairs on the main floor. I can report more about it on Thursday, obviously.
"The guy putting it together said the larger stage and floor is similar in scope to what the old Birchill was like.." The layout of the downstairs IS actually almost identical to the Birch Hill, only smaller. I'm not certain, but I believe bands will be playing on the main stage in the club while the girls dance on any of the 3 side stages.
"The other part that struck me as odd was selling 30 tickets @ 20$ each to play upstairs, or 50 tickets @ 20 each to play downstairs" Yikes!! That sounds absurd. Does the guy putting together the show actually work for 35 club? I can't believe they would be pushing that many tickets but then again, the owners of the club tend to be very, very money hungry.
"Have you ever noticed anyone going upstairs to check out the bands if they didn't come for the bands?" Not really, but then again I'm usually busy hustling. I've never actually been upstairs while a show was going on (again, usually too busy working) so I have no idea about merch sales, though I've gotten a couple of free CDs from bands who came downstairs after their show.
I'll be happy to write more after this Wednesday's show, but honestly I don't think bands playing on the main floor will be a big boost for the club. We don't have that many "rock chicks" and I can already hear many of the girls whining that they have to dance to "this rock shit" (though personally I think dancing to live rock music is awesome!). Also, having to try to hustle guys who "just came for the show" is going to be annoying and probably pointless (sorry, had to throw out a stripper's POV there, but at least with the upstairs people who come "just for the show" don't have to spend a second on the main floor). If they reduce the required tickets sales to 20 or less I would give it a shot, but otherwise I agree that it's just not worth it. But lots of people DO come to see bands play, so maybe it would be worth it? But even pushing 30 tickets for the upstairs seems like way
too much, considering the upstairs is not even half the size of the main floor.
I'll write more after I observe how having a band on the main floor works out.

OK that makes a lot of sense.

No, he's in one of the bands.

Don't apologize! That seems like a hard sell to me too -and I'm figuring anyone who came to see the dancers is going to be just as uninterested in the bands.

Thanks for all the info! If you notice anything else and want to mention it later this week, that'd be great.
