Default is there any way to catch a frightened stray dog?

i live near a major road, and there is this stray male jack russel mix that has been wandering around for a while now. no collar, and quite skinny. i have tried to coax him over and he will come to me close but if i try to put a lead on him or reach out for him he runs off. i feel so bad for him, and dont want him to get hit. i dont want to call the pound becuase they are overrun, and i dont want him to get put down. my boyfriend said he would be interested in keeping him if we couldnt find the owner.

    help?

Do you have treats? Rope? Carrier?

You can use dog food, any beef product, raw chicken or sardines.

We have 4 stray dogs in my neighborhood. OMG. I also do not want to call the pound. Only one will let me get anywhere near her. I made her comfortable with me by giving her treats, then putting some down near me, but not looking at her while she ate them. I'm able to pet her now. I think it's about gradually building trust, avoiding putting out inadvertently hostile signals, patience, and lots of treats.

So if you call the pound, and they catch the poor thing, you can adopt him then - they don't put them down immediately. Even if they're overrun - why would you think they would kill him upon entrance if you're claiming him? They don't WANT to put those animals down. He's got to get fed and get off the street before he dehydrates, starves, or is hit. Don't wait any longer!!!!

Animal control has the means to catch these animals.

With an animal that small, you can also put out a safe trap/humane trap, which is a spring-loaded trap that you put food into. Your humane society or feral cat coalition may have one to lend, you may be able to get one at a feed store, or you can buy one on-line fast. But honestly he needs to get off the street now, so call the pound. Say he's been weaving in and out of traffic so they think he's a danger to traffic and they should be more likely to come out.

well my city pound is hellish. no animal deserves to spend a day in there. they keep them a week maximum.

id put out a trap if

    a i had one

b i wouldnt catch any of the other ferel cats, squirels skunks or other of the menagerie of animals that live in that wooded cross section. theres woods and a creek nearby so he wouldnt dehydrate.

i think ill try the dog cookie idea, its the best that i can do.

if you have a garage or screened in porch, i'd put some really smelly food in it and leave the door open (wet dog food, or chunks of meat). maybe leave a couple small chunks outside leading up to it. that way once he's inside you can just shut the door.

But just a day or two or whatever seems better than what is happening to him, and may happen to him on the streets, no? And if you're going to adopt him, he'll get out of there fast enough (may be a few day hold)...

I agree with the idea of using treats. But if he's afraid of you, it will take some time for him to trust you. Good luck, though. I heart doggies.

it sounds a bit mental, but if you cook pork in the microwave with garlic...there is literally NOTHING a dog wont do for it. i used it to train my very naughty labrador and he freaking loved it. good luck! its so lovely of you to try to get him!

Fuck treats. Get a big rotisserie chicken from WalMart and sit down and throw him pieces. When he's pretty close, put the whole chicken down right in your lap and lay your hands down on your lap. Don't grab him until you're sure you'll get him - you only get one grab with a crafty JRT. Wear leather gloves and expect him to bite. Just run with him straight into your house/car/wherever and wait until he stops biting to put him down.
