The world is coming to not care about America...
i dont see america not being above all as a problem.

Considering the advent of modern travel (1920's), higher efficiency of importing goods and their facilitation by the sum of fuel the US has consumed (past-present), IMHO, the US has brought this change about nearly single-handedly by outsourcing potential US net profits. Under the WTO, they gave a dime and tried to save a nickel, except they missed one thing- production, even in a third-world country is not free. While cutting corners and saving a measly 15% on output costs, they have also managed to finance developing industrial countries with a (formally) strong currency while foolishly growing our own economy too quickly and at the same time, exporting what used to be one of our greatest strengths, the (crumbling) American Dollar.
Ooh, that pesky supply-demand law;
In the meantime, the American dollar has financed foreign companies and their countries, rebuild their infrastructures and finance their industrialization which has naturally strengthened their economy, creating yet another competitor in the global market.
The US is no longer the superpower it once was- the template has changed to accommodate the entire world, changing the scale on which media, business, economy, politics and policy are decided. The term has changed from National to Global, and that being said, the US is just 1 country in this entire world- one which has made poor policy decisions and is taking a backseat as a result.
With this in mind, does this really hurt the US, or are we more feeling the impact of global restructuring or global growing pains, if you will? For example, when a blue-chip company undergoes corporate restructuring, they lose millions in transition, but the overhaul streamlines operations in the long-run, saving them money. Eventually, those savings level-off, becoming part of the company’s gross earnings meaning that although painful, the closing of certain departments created during expansion brings money to the corporation allowing them to maintain their bottom-line. IMHO, I do not believe that the changes that we are now undergoing as a global society went unanticipated (Read the old school policy reports and you’ll see what I mean). Example: NAFTA (an oxymoron onto itself) a.k.a. “a conspiracy” to the unread, had been prefigured since as far back as 1865: Thank you Washington think-tanks for your wonderful archives.
IMHO, it was only a matter of time. Makes sense, since today's markets are increasingly more synergistic, and more importantly becoming dependent on this synergy, than they once were. This has its benefits as well as its drawbacks. Chances are the US may realize these benefits later, rather than sooner, as a result of the shock to our National arrogance. Hopefully not.
It's hard to continue to hold on to the brass ring when one has lost their strength- it's even harder when market behaviours reflect a weakening grip .

It kinda wasn't exactly the same situation 10 years ago in 1998?? ^^^
Great post, Hot2Trot!! Like always.![]()

The more dependent we are on getting what we need from outside sources (be it manufactured goods, raw material, tech support, whatever), the less that we can dictate to world, much less control our destiny as a nation.
The question about globalism: Are other nations being lifted up, while our level merely stagnates, or is US standard of living being ratcheted down as a tradeoff for others being ratcheted up at our expense??
I read the article earlier today and thought to myself; wasn't this a kind of goal that Americans have hoped for since the early-mid 20th century?
My whole life I've heard in the news that our nation is dedicated to bringing democracy and freedom to any nation that wishes for it. It appears to be working quite well. It even appears that other nations are better at a democratic government then we are, but that is true of so many innovative inventions; the original was good but the next generations are so much better.
I found the Newsweek article to be uplifting and inspiring in a way that I've not seen in mainstream media...well...ever.
