    Default weight loss competition

Would anybody be interested in a little friendly weight loss competition? I have a great idea for one that would motivate and enoucourage us, it seems ther eare a lot of girls tryign to shed winter or baby weight right now... I just worry because in a competition there is a winner and a loser, and I worry about sore losers....espicialyl with how fragile it seems around here... So before I post the idea, I was wondering if anyone would even be interested?
I had a little friendly competitioon going with someoen here before and it worked very well. we really helped push each other. Nothing motivates better than a little competition

I'd do it. I'm slightly competitive and need to lose about 10lbs. Competition is always a great motivator for me.

Are dudes eligible? Because I literally just started on a self-made program yesterday and I could use the motivation.

Thats sounds pretty neat! My family just finished doing one and the winner won 1000 dollars for losing the most weight!

Dudes welcome. But same rules apply for either sex.
    * Sign up welcome to all, but acceptance into challenge will be approved by me. Due to the nature of this challenge and privacy concerns as the winner will need to give out his/her address to the loser in order to recieve their prize. If winner would feel more comfortable, I will be the middle man and recieve the gift and ship it to the winner. My real identity can be verified if nesessary by many members of SW*

    here's my idea, input welcome.

Everyone interested signs up for the weight loss challenge. By signing up, you agree to abide by the rules, and acknowldge that this is a competition and thus there will be 1 winner and 1 loser ( unless there happens to be a tie) If you are the loser, you agree to acept it graciously and without (much) complaint, and understand that you will just need to try harder next time. However, if you lose anywhert at all, even if you don't win the competition, then you "won" anyway, so be happy with whatever you achieve.

    The Rules:
    30 day weight loss challenge.
    *Post edited to reflect changes
    1. When PMing me to sign up, please include your begining weight and stats. Post before pics in thread.
    2. At the end up the 30 day challenge, you must PM me weight and stats, and post yoru after pic in the thread.
    * Please don't post weight or stats in thread, only in PM to me. This is to keep the competition fair for all, no talking actual numbers until after winner has been announced.
    4. Winner and loser will be determined by percentage of weight lost. Highest percentage wins, lowest loses. Formula: Total lost divided by Starting Weight gives you the decimal. Multiplying it by 100 gives you the clean percentage.
    (([Starting Weight]-[Ending Weight])/Starting Weight)*100
    ((334-170)/334)*100

    5. Loser must buy winner a gift. Gift should be somethign to engourage a healthy lifestyle. Stress relief such as a spa gift set,a healthy cooking cookbook, maybe a gift certificate for a yoga class in their area. Stuff like that. Gift must cost no more than $25.
    6. By signing up you agree that if you are loser you will buy winner the gift. Failure to do so will NOT be well recieved and you'll get public lashing. NO FLAKES ALLOWED!
    7. In the event of a winner tie, the lowest 2 losers will buy a gift for the winners. Who buys for who will be determined. In the event of a loser tie, they each will buy winner a gift. Winner will recieve 2 gifts. In the event that
more than 2 losers tie, they all gotta buy an equal amount of top winners gifts. example: 4 people tie with 0 weight loss. each of the 4 will buy the 4 top winners gifts.
    8. Encouragement of other members of the challenge is mandatory. Share secrets, tips and words of encouragment. This is a friendly competition designed to help, not hurt feelings.
    9. No tickers! During competition, No specific mention of weight loss or gain. This is just because of someone states they lost 10 lbs, another person may want to exaggerate their loss and say they lost 11 lbs just to win. So no stating exact numbers during competition to keep things fair. However, bragging of weight loss is allowed. Talking about diet/exercise routine is encouraged.
    10. This is a HEALTHY and fun challenge. No diet pills or any unhealthy substances/routines allowed. Only diet and exercise to lose weight.

The challenge will be held in members boards. Signs ups accepted now until May 8th. PM me to sign up. Thread will be created May 8th in members boards. Current pics and must be posted by May 11th, or entry will be invalid. Challenge begins on May 11th and continues until June 9th. After pics and Pm to me current weight must be posted by June 12th. Winner(s) and Loser(s) will be determined and notified by June 15th and arrangments will be made a that time for the gift exchange.
(dates may be changed depending on participation interest and number of signups. Competition will not be held unless there are a minimum of 5 signups.)

Well...there's my idea. What do you think? Is it stupid? Would it work?
I'm worried mainly about flakes on the gift, and hurt feelings from either sore losers or overly competitive people who can't be nice. I dont want anyone to get hurt, upset or feel badly. This is supposed tobe something fun, exciting and helpful for all of us.

    * Post Edited to reflect weight loss calculation change. Weight loss will be calculated by percentage rather than lbs.
    * Post edited to include change to posting guidlines. Don't post weight # in thread, only in PM to me on signing up and at completion of challenge. Total weight lost can be posted after winner is announced.

Erm, I might be disqualified based on the weight loss limit..... I do know that once I got active and eating better with my last job that I lost like almost 15 pounds in a month doing just that and it was healthy.

Maybe mines a lot of bloat? Dunno.

Yeah, me too. I intend to lose more than 10 pounds before May is over...hopefully closer to 15-20.

^ See, I thought about the limit a lot. The problems I run into are; some people lose weight much qiuckly than others, like you. Ther's also bloat weight that may come off quickly and account for a few lbs. So for that, the limit doesn't help.

But on the other hand, I wanted to impose a cap to keep it healthy. If there was no limits, people could theoreticially lose 20lbs or something crazy, making it not fair to anyone else in it, and very unhealthy for themself. Plus, in a challenge, yuo should keep it somewhat fair and close running. If there's one person who can lose 20 lbs, most people won't even come close to that, so they would be discouraged early on because they know they have no chance of winning.

But then again, the lweight cap was very generous. Maximum healthy weight loss is 2lbs a week, or 8 lbs a month. So imposing a 12 lb lcap is over the healthy recommended maximum, so it does allow for some wiggle room.

Try doing body weight percentages instead of pounds.
12 lbs for a bigger person could be entirely healthy whereas absolutely tragic for a thinner person.

    Right?

First off I really like this idea, but have some questions:

Isn't there a way to judge by percentage lost? I know I've heard about it and I think biggest loser uses it because it's more fair, just fyi.

I think there should be a stated cap on the price of the prize like 20 bucks. Something really low so people don't want to inflate the amount they lost.

oops. I'm getting my BA right in the middle of the challenge so it'd probably be a bad idea to sign up. Crap....but I really want to!! Hmm...

Hmmm. Thinking about this. Not sure. Might not be a good idea to get involved with another gift like thing where I spend money Maybe I'll just follow along on my own?

^But see, that's the beauty of it! If you don't lose, you don't have to spend money.

So you have to get into the mindset that you WILL win. You won't spent any money. You can't. becaue you will win. Or at least, you won't lose. You canot allow youself to come in dead last. Any other spot than that is a win!
See the motivation behind it? Extra motivation for us poor folk to do this, cause we can't afford to lose! Shit, I know I can't afford it and I'll be dammed if I have to cough up $25 bucks. So I WILL LOSE WEIGHT.

Perhaps if I may make a suggestion? Since it was mentioned that the results can be difficult to scale based on numbers/pounds alone, what if the winner was chosen by a voting process (among the participants). (Secret ballot of course). Once before and after pics are posted, you can see who has achieved the most dramatic (healthy of course) change for the better. This way you can also take into account the toning of the body vs. shedding pounds (which may or may not be water weight, etc...). And just like you said before, so as to make sure people's feelings aren't hurt, have everyone understand it's not a contest of who looks best, but rather who has experienced the most dramatic change.
Although have a rule that you can't vote for yourself. Designate one person to have votes pm'ed too at the end of the session.

Or even create a simple algorithm of the different factors if you want (score is 50% pounds lost + 50% vote rank). For example, say 8 people participate. At the end, each voter ranks the other 7 for results - 7 being the highest, 1 being the lowest (of course excluding themselves). Then add that to the number of pounds shed. Person with the highest number wins.

Or you can mod this equation, if it needs to be scaled more fairly. Just an idea.

ETA: I like those ideas of the percentage lost too.

^ I would feel really uncomfortable doing that. It would feel too much like a popularity contest if one of the cliques joined, if you worked really really hard lost the weight but came in last because on some people it's harder to see it could be crushing if you lost.

Ex: when I loose weight it all comes of the waist and thighs first, but leaves my actual ass and boobs. Pictures of me from now until I lost say 5 lbs would be drastic because I'm already tall and pretty thin, so after 5lbs I'd look uber thin. If someone is shorter has more weight to lose and sheds it all evenly they could lose 10 lbs and compared to me not look any different at all. Plus photos suck.

Basically voting gets really personal. Too personal.

agreed. voting is far too personal. If there is going to be a winner and a loser, it has to be based on facts, not perception. Plus, I could take a pic with special lighting and at an angle that makes me appear thinner than I am...while say, Joplin, (just using you as an example since you're last posted) would have some uber bright flourescent lighting and a not so great angle, and POOF it looks like she's either gained or not lost at all, when in reality percentage wise she is ahead of me.
    Plus the whole cliquey thing.
Keep it based on fact, or you'll have a lot of people purposely defaulting and/or quitting.

am i the only person that thinks this sounds incredibly unhealthy?? while i respect your intentions and understand that your motivations are pure and come from a good place, you must realize that everyone's bodies are different; people lose weight at different rates, have different needs, goals, healthy percentages and zones that suit them... a weight 'competition' for anyone but the truly obese or people of the same heights/weights/to begin with just isn't healthy.

Yes, it can be unhealthy, but it's been explained that what is ideal here is a healthy way of weight lose. I'm guessing that people who are going to loose unhealthy for a $25 gift, would have done it the wrong way to begin with. The spirit is to be healthy, and if someone's not that's on their shoulders. Please, I'm not trying to come across rude, but I don't think a competition with a small amount at stake is enough to drive someone to unhealthy habits that weren't there to begin with. I may be wrong, and if you're someone contemplating unhealthy options already at this point in the game, you probably shouldn't enter. Just my two cents.

That's why I changed it to go by percentage of weight lost, instead of actual pounds lost because it was brought to my attention that there is no way that going by pounds lost could be fair fo everyone.

Also, yeah, I agree that for some people they coud take this to unhealthy extremes, but I tried to make it clar that you should only enter if yu understand this is just for fun and a healthy way to lose a few lbs. That's why at first I put a weight loss cap on the competition. I said losing over 12lbs in a motnh would be disqualified, but then I was informed that since people lose weight at different rates, it wouldnt be fair to have a cap, so I changed it to percentages. I'm trying to keep it as healthy as possible, while being a good motivational tool for those of us who want to shed a few lbs in a month.

Yeah, photos arent very accurate, and voting would cause a whole heap of problems and hurt feelings and claims of unfairness.

I really want this to be a fun and encouraging thing for people, I want to avoid hurt feeling and any potential unfairness, because that would discourage people.
