Default Long warning: be careful of "friends" who aren't

I am totally panicking; I have been living with my boyfriend for the past two years, but he asked me to keep my apartment just in case we broke up. Well a few weeks ago I went to check my mail, and check on my apartment, but my key was missing; I thought it was kind of strange, but I really didn't think too much of it. Although In the past we have both dealt with some unsavory people, because we are a little too nice. So anyway we have been talking about giving up my apartment for awhile since obviously I am not going anywhere soon. So when I sent in my rent I gave a thirty day notice to my landlord. To my ultimate surprise when the maids and I went into my apartment to pack up and clean, my place was thrashed. There were hypodermic needles, and vomit in my bathtub, and people had obviously trashed my place. I am so afraid right now even though I am living with my boyfriend, because obviously someone had to come into his house to get my key; I feel so violated, and like I am just not safe anywhere after my ultimate privacy has been violated. I filed a police report, and had a locksmith come over and change my locks; I am also going to check my credit report to make sure no one stole my ss number etc. I guess I am just posting this as a reminder to be careful as to who you think you can trust. And as you probaby already know, if you go out of town, or are gone for awhile put your lights on a timer.

I'm sorry. Thats a horrible thing to happen. Check for finger prints? Make a record.

I really wanted to check for fingerprints, and DNA; but the maids cleaned everything up before I found out about it. The cops said that I pretty much said I did everything I could do. It just makes me sick to know that it was obviously someone that I knew, and that they knew that I never went back there. It's so sad, because I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but I guess you can't; I had to learn the hard way.

I filed a police report, and I actually had the police go in with me today, and wait until the locksmith showed up. I didn't want to go in by myself in case anybody was there. I can say that the police were really cool, because they actually waited until I signed all the bills for the locksmith until they left. I'm just so freaked out right now; I guess I wouldn't be if somebody random broke in and did that in my apartment, but it's obviously someone that I know. It's just really sad to me, because all of my private info was there (s.s. number, family's info, EVERYTHING). But I guess it could be worse.

Where did you keep the apartment key? Under the welcome mat or something?

No, not under the welcome mat, I kept it in the dish that my boyfriend and I keep all of our spare keys in.

What's really freaky is that not only were they able to get your key from your boyfriend's place, but they knew where your apartment was.

That really sucks. I hate to say it, but the first person I would suspect would be your boyfriend. He's the one who knew that there even was a key, where it was kept, and to which lock it belonged.

That's really really scary. I hope the cops manage to find out who did it because that's just wrong. I'm so sorry someone put you through that.

Oh man that sucks! It's so creepy to know that someone you can't trust at all was in your (current) apartment and took the key. Not only that but they knew where the apartment was so it was probably someone you knew pretty well.

A friend of mine had someone steal drugs from his medicine cabinet. It's really disconcerting that you have to be constantly worried about who you let in your house.

You had better get a credit report (www.freecreditreport.com) if your information was in the trashed apartment.

^ i just think it's.. strange. you know? how many people would 1) know where to find the key, 2) know where your place was, *and* 3) be able to *get* the key?
