    Default Wisdom teeth extraction

I need to get all 3 of my wisdom teeth pulled soon because they're impacted.. so I was wondering if it'd be better to see an oral surgeon, I heard that if the procedure is done wrong it can cause permanent numbness in your jaw I'm so freaked out now..

    Anyone had that happen?

No but mine went pretty badly, I got infections and missed a week of work and couldn't eat anything harder than apple sauce for 5 days or so. 103 fever, cheek swollen several inches, discoloration in the face, yadda yadda yadda. I'd insist on preventative antibiotics (most dentists prescribe antibiotics as a precaution, mine didn't... until I called him and told him my fever was 103!). I had all four pulled, 3 were impacted and 1 was partially impacted. I ate a lot of painkillers that week.

Most people however don't have nearly as bad an experience. I've never met anyone whose extractions went worse than mine. I was fine after about two weeks, normal after about four, although the swelling returned briefly a few months later (but then went away for good).

Mine was done by an oral surgeon - one I won't be visiting again!

Hmm in oklahoma this procedure HAS to be done by an oral surgeon. I had mine done at 19 and it went smooth. No pain or anything, I was at work and school the next day.

I had all four of mine taken out at the same time and it was done by an oral surgeon (pretty sure it has to be?). I didn't have any complications, but it hurt like a mofo and I looked like a chipmunk for a few days.

ETA: I was knocked out for it, which I definitely recommend!

I've had four removed (on two seperate visits, years apart) and no complications. The uppers aren't bad, the lowers take a little more attention to prevent dry socket & infection but I felt a lot better three days afterwards. Plus they gave me vicodin... good, good stuff. Even better when you're 100% well and chase it with Stoli.

Can't recall if they were removed by an oral surgeon... I was awake both times. I highly reccomend getting laughing gas if you are awake for the procedure. I refused it at first, but the sounds in my head turned me into a nervous wreck- the high from the gas really took the edge off. I knew what was going on, I just didn't give a fuck.

I had all four wisdom teeth removed and it was... not fun.

I absolutely believe that this procedure MUST be performed by an oral surgeon. There is just too much that can go wrong.

:I had all 4 (2 were impacted) done a few years ago. I thought it had to be done by an oral surgeon anywhere?

But the procedure went smoothly, no problems, not even much swelling, plus they give you fun drugs

I had 3 removed the same day. They just numbed me up and drilled through the bone and dug them out. I drove myself there and home. Not really a big deal. The worst part was going to the pharmacy to get my meds on the way home. I was still numb so I couldn't feel blood running all down my chin out of the corner of my mouth. The really cute pharmacist had to point it out.

On the other hand it was kind of amusing seeing the way people were staying WAY away from me. After I figured it out I laughed my ass off.

I had my removed in two sessions (one side and then the other two years later) and I was awake for both. It's really not worth the extra $$ to be out for it.

If they are impacted, I would suggest going to an oral surgeon. My first two were taken out by a dentist (emergency style as the top root had punctured my sinus) and it really hurt. It was the worst thing ever, but it hurt (even the bottom one that wasn't impacted or anything). Plus it cost me over $800!

I had my other side removed 2 years later by an oral surgeon and I didn't feel A THING! The only moment of pain was that damn needle. I healed MUCH faster this time too. And it was under $300!

    just my 2 cents..

That was the reason I was scared to get the surgery for so long. I would just get it taken care of as soon as you can hun, I'm really regretting waiting so long (I still have to schedule to get mine removed ) and wish I had gotten this taken care of a lot sooner! No, I've never heard of anything major going wrong and I've spoken to many about it.

i had 8 teeth removed all in one surgery (4 wisdom teeth and 4 others to make space). my teeth had always looked straight, but i had horrible headaches and jaw pain and stuff, so they yanked'm all and stuck braces on me for about a year. it was done by an oral surgeon, and there was just a little bruise, and i was back teaching ballet two days later. but i was also all the way knocked out. it wasn't so bad. try to find an oral surgeon that somebody else used and liked so you'll feel comfortable and relaxed

def an oral surgeon is a must I just had to taken out by one of two very well established oral surgeons in my hometown my body reacted weird and ended up in the hospital for a month and a half... What I had was a rare case and this was in feb and my jaw still aches from time to time the surgeon said I would expirence this for a yr but I did research on why this complication happened to me and everything I have found and even the oral surgeon agreed with me it was because I was on my period something bout hormones and the other thing that could have prevented it from getting so bad is trusting my instincts when I thought something was wrong as soon as I woke up that day and calling the doctor.....just two tips to prevent problems

I agree with everyone else who agrees that you really should stick with an oral surgeon.
I've had 3 of my wisdom's removed when I got braces around but actually last month I let my dentist remove the last one. It was SO horrible. I got some really weird reaction to the novacaine and started to cry. Then the tooth was really hanging on because the root was curled around the bone or something like that. I heard something in my mouth crack twice. It was a lot of pressure. It ended up hurting for 2 weeks! He said that it was normal because he had to break the bone. SO long story short I wished I got it done at the oral surgeon for everything I went through. Maybe it wouldn't have been so traumatic.

I had to get 4 out, I think they weren't completely impacted but almost.

And wow, it was terrible. I think maybe I just had a bad reaction to the drugs they knocked me out with, but I couldn't function for days. Beforehand I weighed 142 pounds and by the time I could function again I was about 135. I couldn't keep down water. My brother had a substance abuse problem so I refused to take the pain medication afterward, which really wasn't that bad. But yeah, apparently two people had to literally carry me out to the car crying and screaming and laughing. I didn't actually wake up till half an hour into the drive home. The taste of old blood in my mouth for 24 hours was just the grossest thing.

Heh, hopefully mine was just a rare case; I have a very low tolerance towards drugs, and the surgeon was a scary, scary man. How traumatizing...

Wow.. I'm sorry some of you had such bad experiences At least you never have to do it again!

So I'll definitely be looking for an oral surgeon in my area! Are they more expensive than regular dentists? (I have no insurance yet, but might look into getting it and waiting the usual 6 months)

oh and another tip I have been told is that you heal faster off the meds so if you don't need them after the first day or so don't take them!

Not all insurance will cover extractions!! I had insurance and they refused because it was of their opinion that 1) the problem wasn't chronic and 2) they thought the 2 dentists I went to were wrong--that the teeth were tissue impacted and not boney.

The reality is that the problem was chronic AND acute (I kept getting infections in the sockets) and I had headaches that would not go away. AND, the teeth were boney impacted AND my bottom two wisdoms had rooted into my jaw bone.

I went to UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) Dental School and the School of Oral and Maxiollofacial (sp?) Surgery. I got all 4 teeth surgically removed, completely under, pre and post op care for $750. The quotes I was getting from local oral surgeons was $1000 PER TOOTH.

If you can find a school near you, I would strongly advise going that route. The students need to learn on someone and they are supervised by the "best of the best". Most teachers are highly regarded in their field and not just "anyone" is going to do the surgery.

Waiting to get insurance is iffy, as I said before, because it doesn't guarantee that you'll get the surgery and if you've already been told that you need to have your teeth pulled, it would qualify as a "pre-exising condition" and they won't cover that anyways.

^$1200 total (4 teeth) by an oral surgeon? That's not too bad, I'll have to call around.

I was told that I have four impacted back in 2001.

These stories are the exact reason of why I am PETRIFIED of getting them out and just can't bring myself to do it.
