    Default I'm going to Italy!!!

Well, the first thing I have to say is WOO HOO!!!!

OK, second: I;m going to Rome for a week this summer, during the last week of august. I haven't booked the flight yet because I'm not sure what to do about hotels.

I really don't want to pay $1000+ for just the hotel.. I'd rather stay somewhere shitty and have the cash to spend on food and touristy stuff,

    Also, I'm going alone.

Can you suggest some hotel options? I checked out some hostels for about $40 per night, but is it wise to share a room with some stranger in a foreign country? Has anyone done this before?

And also, what is there to do around there, with regards to stuff that a single person can do. I like walking, and shopping.. but what else?

    Thanx a bunch!

Ooooooooooh my goodness you are going to have so much fun. Definitely do all the touristy things: visit the Vatican, the Vatican museum, the Spanish steps, the Trevi Fountain (there's lots of street markets around there that are good), the Colliseum.

I'd recommend taking one of those bus tours or something so you can see everything and then you can go back and look at the things you really liked.

I don't have any hotel recommendations, but I'd say to get a hotel closer to the central part of the city, or at least where the majority of the things you're interested in are. Transportation can get pricey and traffic in Rome is aaaaawful. Subway would be a good option if you're cool with trying to figure it out, but it could get a little confusing. Maybe you could find a hotel that offers tours?

A hostel might not be a bad idea as long as you're suuuper careful about your things. Keep all your identifications and money on you (money belt) even when you're sleeping, and leave nothing valuable when you go out. You might not have any trouble with other guests, but you never know!

Pretty much just have an AMAZING time and be sure to bring a camera with lots of batteries so you can get pictures of e v e r y t h i n g.

I second the hostel idea. Check out Hostelling International-I looked on their site and they had some in Rome for 19 Euros a night. You have to book early though, they fill up quickly!

ETA: It's good too if you're traveling alone cause you'll meet plenty of people.

Hostels... every military person I've known that went on the european tour while stationed in Germany swears by them. Alone or with a group they're almost always safe. Of course, as stated, always keep anything valuable close at hand.

Dude, I'm jealous. Rome looks so beautiful in pictures I can't imagine what it will be like in person for you. Amazing, I'm sure.

As for hostels, it really depends how much you are bringing with you and how much privacy you need. You end up trading most your privacy for more of a community feel and it's easier to make friends with other travelers. Sometimes you can still get your own room for really cheap. I've never been to Europe, but I've stayed in hostels in the US and Costa Rica. Usually the people who work there are really helpful and great sources of info. Stuff does get stolen though because there's so many people coming/going. I always hid a money belt under my shirt/pants and then kept my spending money for the day in my purse along with my camera. Every hostel I stayed at had a safe where they would keep your passport if you wanted too.

I'd really recommend http://www.bootsnall.com/Europe-Italy People post blogs there and reviews on hostels and stuff.

That sounds like fun! Check the city's universities to see if they rent out their dorm rooms during the summer. You'd get the privacy of your own room but still a community setting, often at a cheaper price than a hotel. I've done this in other European cities and really enjoyed it. Hostels are fun too, but I have trouble sleeping in the same room as others due to noise and so forth.

Hostels arent bad...I stayed in rome in actually a very nice hotel....about 150 a night but with no air condition....and I was there during a heat wave so my rome never got below 90 degrees.....hostels (at least from the ones Ive stayed at) tend to do a good job blending a european expirence with American 'neccessities' so that you get the expirence with out being uncomfortable.....oh and definatly go see the catacombs
