There was a PBS Frontline about thsis the last few weeks, leeme go look at BPS.

Yeah sexkitten, Australia has a public system which is Medicare and equal for all, as well as the option for individuals/families to take on private health insurance as well.
Medicare is fairly good. The private system just allows for extras such as elective surgery to be performed faster, a choice of doctor in hospital, possibility of a private hospital room, ancillary cover (dentist, chiropractor, physio etc), etc, etc.
There are also incentives for people to take up private health insurance to ease the public system, such as lifetime cover if you take it up before you turn 30 (premiums remain at the same cost as when you take it up), and also if you earn over a certain amount you get charged more tax if you don't have private heath insurance. (Sorry, I can't remember the specifics).
Sorry, I'm really tired so that may not have made much sense. Here's the link to Medicare Australia if that helps. http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
