Default "Bringing it all to the surface"

You know when you get a facial (or, in my case, laser resurfacing) and then you break out? People (professionals and not) always say that it's because it's "bringing it all to the surface". What does that really mean? I've always been too polite to ask them exactly wtf they're talking about. The last time I had a facial, I broke out like crazy! I could go a year and not have that many blemishes. So, what exactly is this "bringing it all to the surface" stuff... how long does that "all" last down there, anyways? It seems like it should be pretty straightforward, right? Stuff goes out of pores until pores are blocked (or otherwise fucked with) and then pores get infected. Where does this "stuff" live?

I finally brought myself to post this question when I got all these little white heads from the laser treatment. The nurse's first response was the "bringing it all to the surface" one. Then, she told me that they weren't really blemishes but... yadda yadda yadda. I felt like her first response was just something that they tell people because they're used to hearing it from their facialists.

So yea, this phrase, I need it explained to me.

I have no idea but the same thing happened to me last week after I had my facial. My face broke out like crazy.

The stuff is sebum (natural oils) that mix with dirt that goes into your pores - it turns hard and clogs the pore.

A pore is a tube - the sebum/dirt mix can go way down into the tube of the pore (you dont know its there because its under the skin)- when they bring it all up theyre cleaning out the entire pore - bringing it to the surface which can cause breakouts after a facial, etc. The stuff can be down there for a LONG time because you arent cleaning the tube when you wash your face, youre cleaning the surface and if you are a zit popper youre only popping the stuff that has been pushed to the surface by more sebum.

    Does that make sense?

I've never had a facial that left my face looking better, but I've only had 2, because of that. I think it' just how pimples work. You have a little tiny dark dot in one of your pores on the rim of your lip. You tare in the mirror and see it and pop it and tons of stuff comes out...then for the next few days it gets huge, becuase it's been irritated.

Personally Id rather have a little dark dot in all my pores and leave all the crap in there than mess with it and have it get inflamed and huge on my face, AND it's just gonna fill back up again...

Don't really know the point of my post...but yha

Ooh! This makes perfect sense So, how many times and how often should one get a facial? I'd assume I'd break out a lot the first few facials. I would like to clear out the shit in my face though!

Yup. Probably every 2 weeks for about 3 sessions should get it all out... then a maintenance facial every 6 weeks or so! Be sure to use good skin care too - not drugstore stuff but really good stuff that actually treats the problem rather than treating the symptoms...

Im seriously debating on using my Cosmetology license and doing skin care. I love skin...

Does anybody know any good brands for facials except Dermalogica? I hate that shit. It's awful, and the only 2 spas I know of that do good facials have switched to it. It makes my face swell up and feel like its on fire....Plus it really stinks!

I have only gotten a facial once and never did it again. I thought my face looked worse afterwards and had to ride the bus like that, but I did buy this awesome stuff that you can use to do your own facial. It is volcanic ash. I bought it at Wild Oats or Whole Foods and it is called Aztec Indian Clay. It is green and will suck all the oil out of your face. Be warned, though, you will look like an old cracked up crazy person with this on. But it works very well. There is another green mask you can get at walgreens or walmart in a white and green tube. I can't remember the name of it. It smells like mint. WORKS very similar but the Aztec Clay is alot stronger. Also steaming your face and then rubbing some Castor Oil all over your face will release all the sebum plugs in your pores. They will feel like grains of sand. Rinse it off when your done. I also use egg white mask with a little bit of lemon juice in it. Leave it on for twenty minutes and wash it off. This will tighten up your face and help dry up oil. Love it. I do this like 4 times a week. I am 28 and everyone tells me I look like I'm 24. And I'm a smoker lol.

Can you get an Esthiology license there in CA? We can't have both here in NC. But we are taught to do facials, waxing and make-up. The Esthiology program goes a bit deeper into it all and they do body scrubs, self tanner applications, use the machines with the lights and such and waxing.

I'm really excited about Aveda's new Green Science line. It's clinically proven to reduce lines and wrinkles by 37% in 4 weeks and produce lifting by 41% in 4 weeks. http://www.aveda.com/whatsnew/whatsnew.tmpl#

I have been using the Pure Vital Eye Cream and Outer Peace moisturizer. Once I can afford the Green Science though I definately want to try it. I still love my Cetaphil face wash though. I don't use a toner.

So dirt really just hangs out down there for weeks?! Is it possible for the dirt to come out WITHOUT causing a pimple?

I dont know if we can have both but the cosmo license is good for hair skin and nails so i can use it to be an esthetician or a manicurist if I want. I thought all cosmo licenses were like that?

I know it does cover manicuring and some esthiology but a lot of salons now want you have a special license for those things like nail technician license or a separate esthiology license. But I still think we can technically do things in a salon. We spend one week in esthiology the entire time we are in school. We spend one month in manicure and pedicure though.

I don't think it's dirt as in dirt from your environment. The "stuff" is actually a result of lipases that are released from Propionibacterium acnes (which incidentally are a common resident in our pilosebaceous glands). These lipases digest excess sebum and produce a fatty acid that contributes to the inflammation of a plugged follicle (ie: zit).

I don't have an answer for your second question. You'd think that the crap could come out without causing a pimple since facials are supposed to relieve plugged follicles. Maybe if treatments are done on a regular basis, it would keep follicles clear and minimize breakouts while still expelling all the crap. Obviously you're not going to have laser on a regular basis. Maybe keep up with regular facials or incorporate a topical retinoid to help keep everything unblocked?

btw, how's the healing coming along? I'm super super curious. I don't think I posted in your laser pic thread but was very appreciative that you posted pics.

We spent a month in each.

If I wanted a job I would find a spa that would be willing to hire me if I went to specialized training with their skin line. So, if they have dermalogica I would contact dermalogica and find out about their classes, etc so I can get some advanced training. We did learn a LOT about skin in school. That was the only month in school where I didnt miss a day. I really liked it.

OR I would go get a job at a place like Faces 24/7 which is like the Supercuts of skin. I would learn there and then move on to bigger and better (like a spa).

But honestly it doesnt matter - Im going to school for accounting in the fall. I have no plans to use my cosmo license for hair, skin or nails.

I call bullshit. I think it's just a poorly done facial that irritates your skin and causes it to break out.

    ^ i agree.

of course, i've never had a real facial. but i have given myself home treatments of all sorts of things and the best results i've had have never been preceded by my skin getting worse before it gets better.

and i don't think those facials "work" by bringing all that junk to the surface. i think they irritate the skin, which causes the skin to have an inflammation response, bringing in blood and nutrients and all that...and if anything, that's what causes the skin to clear up.

I purchased the Green Science line a little over a month ago, and I can noticeably see a difference in the texture and firmness of my face. The eye cream is amazing, it actually feels refreshing to put on! It's hard to be consistent with facial regimes-especially after working a long night. I love the tingly feeling so much that I look forward to putting it on!

It is fairly expensive, but I've been using it religiously for over a month and I haven't used even a 1/4th of the product.

    I Aveda!
