Ha I was basically the entire basis for the second hold steady album!!! I was room mates in NY with the lead singer!! Those dudes are amazing guys

And I agree Susan, but shit it if it expands a few minds I'm all for it.

BTW I went on a Pavement, Meat puppets and sonic youth spree about 3 months ago. I have the list I had for my ipod called " I want my flannel and 92 back" I'll grab a top ten from that. I think you will enjoy it

    Right on.

I'm so old I actually saw Neutral Milk Hotel (on the same day I saw John Fahey), and Pavement, and the Pixies before they broke up the first time, and . . . oy. But then a couple of summers ago we saw the Fall at the Reading Festival, and everyone was about 50 years old, and I felt much, much younger. I totally agree about the Fall, by the way. Not only were they awesome, but almost none of the bands influenced by them suck, which is hard to say about most influential groups.

And also we are flying down to LA in October to see My Bloody Valentine. I hope against hope they buck the reunion trend and don't, you know, suck.

Kevin Shields is the master. Loveless is an absolute classic of shoegaze brilliance!

This thread is bitch slapping me repeatedly with the fact that I am a mere child of 20. Guster, The Pixies, Pavement...I was like...in elementary/middle school for those bands. I will say that Black Francis/Francis Black/Frank Black from the Pixies seems to be a pretty cool dude, even if he does remind me vaguely of a slightly fatter and les offensive version of Jello Biafra, lol.

Come to think of it...those bands were exclusively elementary school cause Britney Spears was still a virgin when I was in middle school, lol. Then again I was still in middle school when I got ahold of the first Gorillaz album, which I now laugh about when I look back in amazement with how my tastes seem to loop sometimes. Mind you, I just thought the music was cool..I didn't comprehend that it was actually good good, lol.

Hmmm, where IS that album? *Goes digging in bedroom*

EDIT: SHIT I can't find that fucking CD! I never got it loaded onto my computer either, DAMN IT.

Susan please read "Love is a mixtape" they are selling it at Urban Outfitters right now oddly enough. I stumbled upon it when I was in there the other day dicking around. Then report back to me One of the best books I've read in a long while. I think You'll love it.

Oh and I heard about the MBV tour. They are or have played here. I know a few people were commenting on how they really don't want to go see them because the last time it was awful. Report back on that too and let me know how they size up. I would be interested in seeing them again, but I don't want it to ruin the last experience I had seeing them live.

On a lighter note I saw the entire OG line up of X 3 months ago here. It was pretty fucking awesome.
Please tell me you know who the crust brothers are!

Shame on us for not have listing these bands yet:

    tsk tsk the "obvious list"

    6. Belle & Sebastian
    7. Bright Eyes

yeah!! I love hearing of bands from other countries that I've not yet discovered.

I'll admit I'm a snob and dislike Buckley. But I'm a huge fan of CSS. Who can't be? Their music is genius.

NZ is home of The Presets and Crystal Castles? At least I think so. Either way both bands are stellar and the presets new album drops in June (although i've successfully gathered all it's contents via limewire!)

I looooooved many NZ bands from the 80s/90s -- the Clean, the Chills, the Dead C, Verlaines -- ooooh, they were so good.

Mine is the "Darkening of the Light" . I think the mandolin is perfect for this song. Followed by "Tomorrow Wendy".
Who cannot like "Bloodletting : the Vampire Song" from either "Bloodletting" or "Still in Hollywood".

I've been on a real Kiwi/Flying Nun kick. Here's a few groups that get overlooked but are IMHO great:

    Look Blue Go Purple:

I think I'm in love with the drummer.

My friend Kam (AKA The Chain Gang Of 1974) has a brand new song he just put out called "I Wish Daft Punk Was Playing At My House" which caused a big freak out amongst a good few people to the point where he had to point out that it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, lol. You can check out all it's nu-electro awesomeness at www.myspace.com/thechaingangof1974.

Death Cab makes me really sad though. I love the Plans album and Transatlanticisim, but Ben Gibbard just breaks my heart to listen to. "What Sarah Said" is an amazing song, but it's incredibly painful and tends to make me cry.

I think at one point I actually danced to them at work way back when. It was like, the most challenging thing I've ever tried to do, lol. How do you make Marching Bands of Manhattan sexy?

Don't feel bad, obscure bands are usually overrated...and obscure for a reason!

I love all my wonderful mainstream bands and I don't really care that five billion other people also love them too. The way I see it, the more the merrier. I only get protective of my little local bands. Now that the scene has gone and exploded, I wish they could be home still, but I'm proud of all the tours and signings and such. So I've settled into a sort of "I saw them first" mentality. That and when you're at a show in Texas and all the local Denver bands give you hugs and such when they first spot you, it's great fun to make all the locals jealous.

what? Over rated for a reason?! Ummm I'm just going to leave that alone. Some of us find the obscure music as ART and seek it out. Some of us aren't into commercial crap that's generalized for the masses because people are too fucking stupid to understand anything that isn't bubble gum.

Oh, brother. Yeah, "Sophia". Your tastes are soooo far superior to anyone else's. Death Cab for Cutie and Bright Eyes are pretty fucking obscure.

I remember wishing that nobody in the world would ever learn about Operation Ivy or Pansy Division or the Zero Boys so they wouldn't get all commercializized-ed and sheeit. But mostly because I wanted to feel cool and that could be achieved by being on the inside of a tiny, punker-than-thou little posse.

    I was in 7th grade.

Now, get to looking for some more obscure bands. I mean, lots of us have heard of most of the ones you listed so you know they must suck.

Oh get over it...ALL music is art of some form or another. Lord help us all even Britny Spears is art...sort of in the way that advertising is art, but it's still art. Bjork...is art and certainly is not obscure. Madonna and Michael Jackson are sort of musical Andy Warhols in a way and god knows niether of them could ever be called obscure.

I concur. I just think it's hilarious this somehow turned into a "OMG LOOK HOW INDIE AND COOL I AM" thing. I don't want everyone to listen to my favorite bands, because then they can't play at cool small clubs anymore and that pisses me off. Yup.

    PS: Dottie, I love you.

I don't think this thread turned into that. AA basically said obscure bands are obscure because they suck (sometimes true) and then S_A called her tastes mersh (also partially true).

Unless you're referring to where I said I don't think everyone should listen to the same thing because that would be boring.

I think y'all are projecting here, because seriously, Dottie and Mr. C, you know you secretly think your music kung fu is the fiercest.

^^^Oh, Susan...If you only knew. I am the anti-scene. I like a lot of the "cool" bands that are good but not signifigant enough that people will be listening to them in 50 years. But I'll also stop the radio on a fucking Randy Travis song if I like it.

Oh noes! I admitted I listen to the radio!

What was a fun thread is quickly going in the toilet. There's nothing more boring than ye old "obscurity is better than popularity because the un-washed masses can't appreciate art....blah.. blah" argument. It's opposite, "obscure bands deserve it because they suck" is just as lame. There's a lot of popular crap that is just that... crap. There's also a lot of obscure bands that I wish had stayed that way.

lol that's NOT what I meant...C'mon now. I just think it sucks when people talk down "obscure" bands because they aren't mass friendly. I never SAID the bands I've mentioned were obscure.
