    Default Doberman Dogs

In that Pit Bull thread, someone had mentioned Doberman dogs being aggressive. I don't want to rehash the whole Pit Bull thing (so let's please not bring that up in this thread, I want my question answered without the thread being shut down beforehand), I'm just asking about Doberman's. Are they GENERALLY aggressive dogs? I've always wanted one (I was going to give it a pink rinestone collar and name it Princess... I thought it would be ironic since they're scary-looking). Let's say that I'm you're average dog-owner... nothing special. I taught my dog to walk on a leash, sit, play fetch, etc. Let's say I had a gated yard but it's not like it's impossible for dogs to get out. Would I be putting more on my plate than I would have otherwise thought?

I'm really just asking about the general personality of their breed. I know it's possible for every dog to be aggressive and not, but I realized that I know nothing about them.

Aggressive no, loyal and guardians totally.

Our old dobe was the most affectionate dog I have ever owned. They call them "velcro dogs" for a reason; they love to be stuck to your side getting attention all day long. Huge babies, can withstand toddlers poking and prodding and pulling on them, and love every min of it.

But they are also loyal, and will guard you and your family and home w/o training, it is instinct with them. They were bred to guard the tax collector (who they were named after, BTW) while making rounds late at night.

While I don't fear any dog really, I would much rather break into a house at 3am with a pit bull (since everyone seems to fear them) living there than a dobe, lol.

They are VERY fast learners, and love to please, they can and will do a varity of tricks and training and pick it up quickly. You have to be careful though, since they are a sensitive breed and DO NOT respond well to negative training and striking or raised voices. A firm steady training method with positive reenforcement is best.

Our old dobe Caesar, helped our daughter to walk. She would grab a hold of his collar at 1yr old and he would gently get up and slowly prod along side of her while she toddled along. If she fell, he would lick her gently, and encourage her to get back up and try again. But on the reverse, if an unknown car drove up or someone he didn't know knocked on the door, he would go into "guard mode" stand between us and whoever was there and be very intimidating looking (the whole chest out, ears up, alert eyes, and straight tail nub), and stand at alert until we told him things were ok and that the person in question was a friend; he would then go lay down by the kiddo and not move away from her side until the person left.

I love dobes, they are my all time fav breed, and I love to talk about them, lol. Please read up as much as you can about them and their history. Also DO NOT get a Z factor dobe, or get a "warlock" dobe, or get one from Kimbertal Kennels (AKA USA's largest puppy mill). Those are all recipes for disaster, IMO.

Check out a few of the country's top kennels and make sure they do ALL OFA testing, and have a spay/neuter contract, lifetime help, and have a good reputation. OFA testing MINIMUM would consist of hips, thyroid, heart, lungs, eyes, a VWD check, Wobbler's check, NO Z factor, and make sure the parents are on premises, and that at least one if not both parents are Ch in either show or working or Schutzhund.

Cambria Dobermans IMO is the PREMIER doberman breeder in this country currently, and they have produced over 100 AKC Ch to date, I would go to them in a heartbeat for a dobe puppy; since their standards are top notch, and buying a puppy from them is pretty much a guarantee that you will have a mentally stable, well bred, healthy, true to standard dobe pup.

Also, if you want a 'natural' dobe puppy, you will probably have to pay up front in full, since most people want docked/cropped dobes, and those things have to be done within a certain age.(tails 1st few days of life, and ears up to 10-12 weeks max).

Personally, I prefer a cropped/docked dobe, they look like coonhounds if they are natural, lol.

Anything else you wanna know ask here or PM me.

I have 3 dobermans and I love them to death. They are very good at turning it off and on I have found. They can be in guard moment one second and then completely relaxed the next. They are very very loyal as the above poster said and will protect you no matter what. Amazing choice for a dog for just about anyone. My best friend is about 5'2 100lbs and lives in a not so nice neighborhood. She bought one and takes it to work and home every night. People have tried things until they saw the dog all puffed up then they run=). amazing breed

Several of my friends growing up had them and were raised with them. Wonderful dogs, really. My friend Ben had one with the full tail and big ears and as Kitana said, they look TOTALLY different. Kinda dopey, and nowhere near as menacing.

Is the ear cropping purely aesthetic? This makes me sad.
My friends doberman had beautiful velvety soft ears.

Originally it was to make the dog look more menacing, so robbers would think twice about attacking the tax collector making rounds with big sacks of gold.

Now, it's aesthetic, but if they are doing K-9/Schutzhund work, it gives the "bad guys" less to grab onto on the dog (same with the tail), so they can't fight the dog as easy.

I don't really want to get into this because there's been too many arguments on SW of late. I don't agree with it, that's all.

They were in the 70s when they were the favored dogs of jerks. Fortunately replacing German Shepherds, that jerks seemed to prefer in the 60's. The 80s, 90s, and so on seem to have gone back and forth between pit bulls and rottweilers, except for a few years ago when the dogs, the breed of which I can't remember, being kept for a convict by his adoptive lawyer parents in San Francisco killed one of their neighbors in the apartment building they lived in. Jerks wanted them for a while, but couldn't remember the name of the breed. And you should meet my ex-wife's vicious little fuzzy purse dog that I have no idea what she is. She just can't hurt anyone because she's little (always a good excuse).

So, no. It's almost always more the owner than the dog that's a problem. For the record, I consider problem owners to include people too small or weak to handle the dog they've taken on.

Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

I have a dobe/pit mix, and my dog is not at all aggressive toward humans, but HATES other dogs and starts fights with them all the fucking time. She always wants to kick their asses. And she chases cats with the intent of eating them. She's a mix so I can't say she's representative of dobermans in general, but one thing is for sure: She is super dominant. I had a real hard time getting her to be obedient because I'm laidback and not an alpha personality.

I have dobes. One is from a breeder, the other a rescue. They will not bit unless commanded to do so. They are super social, do great with kids and other dogs. They are super intelligent, loyal to the end and fantastic to own. Typically, they are not aggresive, and it is not a favored trait of theirs by breeders. Both of mine are great, and I would give up the world for them, and peoiple always want to take them home with them. I can't say enough about how fantastic this breed is...IF you choose a responsible breeder, or have extended history on a rescue. ANY dog can be bred and or trained to be aggresive. I was a vet tech for years..I most fear cocker spaniels, miniature pinschers (absolutely no relation to the dobe) and little dogs in general. I have NEVER been bit by a large breed dog, but several times by small breeds.

I've never encountered an aggressive Doberman. They are very intelligent animals and must learn who is "boss" early on. I understand they will protect their home and master with their life.

My ex had a doberman. Man I loved that dog. Earlier posters are right, B was protective. It felt like he understood that I was his master's girlfriend. He followed me around the house, and when I took him for walks he obeyed me but also always put himself between me and other people.

In short, he is an intelligent dog with a strong sense of loyalty but is also well trained enough to never attack unless his owner needs him for defense. He is polite.

He also has those uncropped silky ears. Such a cutie-pie.

^See, that's what I want. I want a dog to go, "Don't fuck with my girl" but I don't want it to go around attacking people. It just seems like such a thin line.

Ajbaer's were the first dobermen I've spent any time with, and if they are indicative, dobes rock. And the leaning!! Awww. My favourite. Apparently that is a doberman trait...they lean on you. It's precious.

hahaha...she was like 5 months old when I took that picture. I put hay in her mouth and made her pretend like she was a horse..if the pic is whole then you see the horse eating too. Her ears were cropped by the breeder so we had to keep them taped...that made her look like a horse to me..LOL
That and she loves horses, she'll follow them around and do what they do..she even jumps up and drinks fromtheir water buckets. She's such a ham.

As far as protective stuff, she learend "watch 'em" When I give that que she becomes severly alert, pricked ears-guarded stance-and a forward lean to make her appear aggresive. She will stare the person down until they pass, and will then turn her head and walk like that until she feels they're at a safe distane. This works to my advantage so I can jog at night. My male is not really like that out of the house..if you try to enter though he does not take it nicely unless told it's OK.

I've never had an issue with them, granted they are only a little over a year old. They both have a lot of training, her more than he. She starts agility this summer...I'm so phsyched she has all the things it takes.

Although the breed isn't necessarily aggresive, all breeds CAN be if not properly trained. If you get a dog from a respectable breeder, or one that is deemed acceptable by a rescue AND train it extensively you will have a great dog. The biggest thing is trainind with ANY breed. I've been both a vet tech, and obedience trainer and I've seen just as many "bad" dogs that were small, as were large.

my big dog is a doberman/shepperd mix and she is the biggest baby EVER. i'm actually kinda jealous about everyone elses protective doberman cause mine will just lick you to death. Sure, she barks at strangers out the window, but as soon as the door opens she just rolls over and waits for you to pet her. My little terrier mix is the alpha and bosses the big one around, so I'd take my chances with the doberman rather than messing with the 20 pound bully.

These days I like to count my money. I like to wash it delicately and iron it. Sometimes I dry it with some bounty to make it all nice and cuddly. I love my money... did I say that out loud?
