Default Weird Rib / Back Pain

First off I want to state I have a doctors appointment this Friday.
I'm just curious if anyone else has ever had this problem and if they know what caused it.

I have pain in my ribs. Left side, back. I'd guess it's the 2nd or 3rd rib up from the bottom. I have NO idea what I did. There is no bruising, no swelling.
It's been bothering me for a little over two weeks and has progressively gotten worse. I've laid off working out, taken prescription strength Ibueprofen and Flexeril at night before bed. Nothing seems to help. It's at the point where it's painful to breath in deeply and sleeping is ridiculously uncomfortable. The pain wakes me out of a dead sleep. I'm only working a couple day shifts a week and have kept my stage shows pretty mellow (none of the usual bendy twisty fun).

Anyone ever had a similar issue?

I get this all the time but in the front and it doesn't last for a really long time. My BF gets them in the back.

For me it's in the front, either side and when I breath I feel like dying, so I just hold my breath and take a real slow breath in even though it still really hurts let it out slow (because that usually hurts as well) until I suck it up and keep breathing in even though it hurts so bad and it "pops" back into place.

Does that sound like what it is?

After I've finally taken a big breath it goes away, but man does it hurt!!!

I've asked my doctor about it before and I think he said that it was the stuff between the rib getting popped a little out of place...I don't remmeber actually, I could be making it up.

Nope it just makes the pain level spike. *shrug*
I think what you're talking about is a subluxed rib. I'm assuming what I have is something like that but who knows lol.

Personally I'd see a chiropractor rather than a doctor. Doctors will usually just prescribe pain killers whereas a chiro will do an adjustment and possibly fix it on the spot.

I put a rib out doing pole work and the chiro fixed it straight away. It was awful coz when I took a deep breath it really hurt.

i think you might have pulled or torn the muscles between your ribs i did that once and i seriously thought i had broken a rib or something it hurts to breathe and move, there nothing you can do just take anyi-inflammatorys and wait till it fixes itself it took like a month to be back to normal it sucks

Is it just pain or shortness of breath? Talk to your doctor about the possibility of pulmonary embolism.

I'd see a chiro first too.

No, no, there's no shortness of breath. Just pain upon deep inhalation.
I still have full lung volumn. It's just really uncomfortable when I breath deeply due to the movement in my ribs.

    The pain seems intercostal.
The lack of bruising and/or swelling is what's throwing me for a loop.

I'll find out soon enough I guess, i'll report back with all findings!

Hmm sounds to me like a strained muscle in between the rib cage. I suffered from something similar.

Either way I hope that it is nothing serious honey.

    Let us know the results.

I feel your pain lady. Last year I cracked a rib and the pain was unrelenting. It sounds as though you may have only slipped the rib. It is suprisingly easy to do. An agressive sneeze can do it. There is actually a disorder known as "slipped rib syndrome" in which the rib continues to "go out' due to the inability of the intercostals strength to hold the rib in proper place.

I would go see a Massage Therapist before I would get cranked by a chiro, personally. Massage Therapists deal with treating subluxations all the time. In my experience, I went to a chiropractor, and she hurt me... A LOT!!! She was my trusted chiro, but i guess I did not emphasize how much pain i was in before getting adjusted. X rays later showed that it was, indeed, broken.

Whatever your decision, I just hope you feel better soon!

I have similar pains, and I was talking to a guy who does spine manipulative therapy and he said it sounds like I have a disc out of place in my spine. Apparently it can stick out enough to make one of your ribs poke out, too.

I agree, a chiro would be a better choice.

I'm so glad that you didn't go to the chiropractor! I'm telling you, being 'adjusted", was excruciating and severely accelerated my pain. Thankfully, your injury was properly determined before you had to go through that.

I hope that they prescribed you some decent pain meds. From what I was told, doctors used to tightly wrap ace bandages around broken ribs. Apparently they now know that this restricts breathing. It's important to continue to take deep breaths. Very shallow breathing, can cause lung infections or pneumonia. The pain meds really helped me to be able to breathe fully.

I'm sorry this has happened to you. remember to take it VERY easy. The meds, if you are taking any, may mask the pain to the point where you feel better and think that you are ready to hop back on the pole. DON'T DO IT!!! I was told that it can taje 6-8 weeks for a full cracked rib recovery. Did your doc reccomend you to take time off?

I have an astounding tolerance for pain so my breathing hasn't been affected.
    It's just annoying.

My doc (who is forever interested in my job in a positive curious way) said I should take it easy but to let my level of discomfort dictate my physical activity.

I worked last night with no real issues other than being extra sore today.
It helps that we don't have proper poles so it's all general stage work which I can muddle through just fine.

It can take awhile, anywhere 4-8 weeks.
The only thing she seemed to think I need to worry about is the off chance it could puncture my lung. She seemed to think I would be all right though seeing as i've been working etc the whole time with no issues other than increased tenderness/pain.

^^^ I mentioned above I don't do any pole work.
We don't have real poles. Around the edge of the stage are intermittantly placed poles but they're sunk into a metal frame that seperates the stage from the tip rail. I don't bother with them.

    See what I mean?

I had a pain just like that and I thought it was stripping related but I needed my gallbladder out.
