    Default tea!

For some reason when I try to search tea, nothing comes up at all....I just started drinking hot tea and I know nothing about them but I'm becoming obsessed....so I was hoping to get some tips on what teas do what and what health benefits they have and just anything about them! Also, can I reuse tea bags? Any good websites on them?

This is where I order mine:

    http://www.teavana.com/c=new_to_tea/shop.axd/Static

It has health info on the site and more specifics next to each product.

My ex turned me into an addict for this stuff - Lapsang Souchong: http://www.teavana.com/Lapsang+Souch...ProductDetails

Cheap teabags from the grocery store aren't really going to give you much oomph the second time around.

With one teaspoon of the loose lapsang, I can get up to 4 large cups.

it sounds really crazy, but some historians think that china wasnt effected by the great plaugues of europe because the chinese drink looooads of tea and tea is incredibly full of anti-oxidants. I LOVE TEA!!

instead of reusing bags, you can get one of those perforated balls that holds tea leaves.

One of my current faves is Saphara white tea.

I've always wondered this- do non-green teas provide antioxidants too? I drink bucket loads of peppermint, just because it helps my stomach. Also, orange pekoe for a pick-me-up.

That makes sense. I knew that there could be no way that tea was never mentioned on this board.

I think white teas might have as much as green teas or close, but black teas have less than green teas:

Therefore, we conclude that green tea has more health benefits than an equal volume of black tea in terms of antioxidant capacity. This can be explained by the fact that each tea is different in terms of composition and concentration of antioxidant compounds. As reported previously (6Citation –8Citation ), TF are low (2–6% of extracted solids) and thearubigens (>20%) are high in black tea, whereas in green tea, catechins are much higher (30–42%), particularly EGCG, which is the most abundant catechin.
http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/content/full/132/4/785 - old article, but I haven't heard where these claims were contested. I think it's because the black teas are the most processed?

the levels of antioxidants differ among teas simply because of what the teas are made of.

black, green, oolong, and white teas are all from the same plant, camellia sinensis. their antioxidant levels differ due to the oxidation process that they go through (black tea has the most oxidation). some will argue that white tea has more antioxidants than green and so on but the fact is that all of these camellia sinensis-plant teas have substantial levels of antioxidants. in other words--they are all good for you regardless of the antioxidant level.

herbs such as peppermint are likely to have antioxidants and other phytochemicals (good things) for you, although i haven't read too much about their antioxidant benefits. rose hips do have a high concentration of vitamin c, which is an antioxidant.

    the point is, drink up!!!!

as for reusing teabags, i'd say no. if you're using a tea ball or tea infuser, you can probably make 3-4 pots of tea with the amount of tea in the infuser.

processed=oxidation levels. black tea is still very, very healthy for you!

Its a white tea and one of my faves. White tea is suppose to help protect you against aging. It also tastes good too.

Just a note: Try to look for teas that are "fair trade" certified. That means that the native people who grow the tea aren't slave labor (or its modern equivalent)--that you're not helping to oppress tea growers.

teavana is really good. I'm not sure if you can do it online, but at their stores (in major malls) they'll even come up with a blend for you. their green teas are awesome.

the re-use of tea bags is kinda like coffee left on the warmer - take a sip, if you don't like it, make some fresh

I grew up drinking tea and love all kinds.

If you're wanting a caffeine buzz then go for a Yerba Matte (I love the lemon flavor). It has as much caffeine as coffee. Green and white teas are the healthiest and there are TONS to choose from. I love green ginger and green lemon. Green with any kind of fruit tastes delicious to me.

Teavanna is a great store and you can mix n match what you want and try just one cup. If you google "green tea" or "white tea" you are more likely to get a lot of hits!

    MMmmmmmm tea!
My current favorite is Celestial Seasonings Almond Sunset. My aunt used to have it so when I rediscovered it, it was totally nostalgic for me.

Here is my tea thread I made a while back:

Might be some good suggestions in there.

Went into a Teavanna but it was INSANELY crowded with women going nuts over teapots. I think it was the first day it opened. Might go back soon.

What exactly do anti-oxidants DO? I hear all this talk about them and I can't seem to get a good answer on their health benefits.

I've been drinking hot tea consistently for 10 years. I love trying new flavors. I buy my regular green tea from Asian grocery stores and buy Japanese brands. Japanese drink green tea all the time so they make good ones. Another tea that I like to buy at the Asian grocery is green tea with jasmine (it's usually Chinese.)

Tigersmilk, I love Republic of Tea white tea in pineapple guava. I miss when Republic of Tea was sold in the Starbucks in Borders and Barnes and Noble so I could order a cup of their tea before buying the whole cannister.
Teavania's teas taste good but in order to make your tea taste like the ones you sample in the store you have to add alot of the rock sugar which they sell in the store.

I try not to add too much sweetener or sugar to my tea - it tends to disguise the flavor for me. Also if you brew teas too long they can taste bitter from all the tannins. But it's all about personal taste. Some people like it really strong!
