Default Contributing to causes / charities

I am hoping to have enough money in a few months to finally pay off my credit debt and start living the life I want. I have always wanted to be able to financially contribute to causes that are important to me, even if it's just a small contribution. I'm thinking about a no-kill animal shelter, a political group that promotes freedom of religion, and groups that support international women's rights. I am inspired by my mother, who always contributed a flat 10% of her earnings to the church, regardless of the fact that she made very little as a single mom supporting 2 kids.

I'm curious - are there any agencies or charities that SWers have found to be particularly worthy? Either because you've received assistance, or because you feel like your donations are well-used?

If I had money to donate, I would probably do NARAL or Planned Parenthood.

I did use Planned Parenthood as a teenager, when it was basically my only option for birth control. Everyone was always nice and helpful there.

I also think that The Sisters of Divine Mercy are well worth donating too.

    I like these 2 orgs:

    Best Friends:
    http://bestfriends.com/
they rescued some of Michael Vick's dogs, Katrina animals, and many other abandoned and abused animals
History: In the late 1980s, when Best Friends was in its early days, roughly 17 million dogs and cats were being killed in shelters every year, and the conventional belief was that little could be done to lower that number.

In the early 1990s, Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets campaign began as a grassroots effort to place dogs and cats who were considered "unadoptable" into good homes, and to reduce the number of unwanted pets through spay/neuter programs. Since then, the number of dogs and cats being destroyed in shelters has fallen to less than five million a year. There has been much progress, but there is still much more to do.

At the sanctuary: Most of the animals who find a safe home at Best Friends have special physical or behavioral needs, and our expert staff of veterinarians, trainers and caregivers offer them all the help they require. Most of them are ready to go to good new homes after just a few weeks of special care. Others, who are older or sicker, or who have suffered extra trauma, find a home and haven at the sanctuary, and are given loving care for the rest of their lives.
    Farm Sanctuary
    http://www.farmsanctuary.org/
Every year Farm Sanctuary's shelters open their doors to suffering farm animals. Some of the animals are found during our investigations of stockyards, factory farms and slaughterhouses - animals who are abandoned at auctions when they could no longer walk, or thrown into dumpsters because they were no longer "productive." Other animals come to Farm Sanctuary from SPCA's and humane societies that need our assistance when farm animals are left to starve to death. And, some of the animals who reside at Farm Sanctuary took matters into their own hooves and escaped from the slaughterhouse!

In the human oriented department, I support:

The Samaritans...a UK based group for preventing suicide, helping depression, and generally just listening to you when you need someone to talk to. Truly amazing people.

To Write Love On Her Arms...I'm not exactly keen on their faith-based approach, but there just arn't enough self-injury help groups out there...especially ones that are regarded as flat-out cool. I figure it dosn't matter if Jesus gets involved so long as they're doing the right thing, which they very much are.
