I dont know where you would start in the states, or where ever you are. I just wanted to say 'm jealous! I miss the circus world.

We had a member named Roxi Dlite who does hooping, she posted some pics a while back and they were very impressive, to say the least.

It's easier to get started with "Hoop Dancing" in the USA than it is here in Australia.
www.hoopgirl.com is a good place to start in regards to Hula Hooping. I have hit a wall in regards to my hula hooping as I have no one to do it with and thus learn thru etc .. the Gold Coast sucks in re to learning how to Hoop Dance.
It's not so much the tricks I want to learn .. it's being able to "dance" with it that I want to learn and that is something a circus hula hooping class can't teach me.

From an old thread-
I do!I specialize in aerial hoop, and also do tissu and aerial straps. I can put together a good routine on static trapeze if necessary too, but eh. Doing static is like playing guitar--*everyone* does it. So I don't.

jaizaine, you are in the perfect city if you want to start! One of the best circus schools in the world is in Melbourne. But you will have to tame your fear of heights if you want to do tissu...eventually you'll be doing drops and falls from 30+ feet! Tissu is actually one of the things where you're least likely to take a fall. For one, you're locked in when you're doing most tricks (with the fabric in a knot around one or both of your ankles/feet, or around your waist or thighs for a lot of drops). For two, if you do fall, you can catch yourself easily at any point on the way down, as opposed to trapeze where your only chance of catching yourself is to grab onto one horizontal bar. Plus when you first start tissu, you can do most things fairly low until you feel secure. It's only when you get into more advanced drops that the height thing comes into play.
oh and if you do start taking tissu lessons, and your teacher tells you you're going to be doing a forward roll...beware. That's the one miniature drop that will make you feel like someone just whacked you in the crotch with a hammer, lol.

You can do pretty much everything in the world there. Someday during the next few years I will be hauling my ass over for a year on a working holiday visa, just so I can do an intensive course there. (yes i know US citizens can't do the working holiday scheme...but I'm an ____ citizen also.)
Also, here's a good place to get apparatus. The site doesn't look like much but they make quality equipment. (Based in the US).
www.cbe-circus.com/aerial.htm
www.trapezerigging.com is more geared toward giant outdoor flying trap setups, and their hula hoops are crap, but...welll, there they are.
and of course, there are a million aerials videos on youtube that are well worth checking out. type in Katia Sereno or Stephanie Gasparoli and see what comes up.![]()
Im self taught in Silks and I am currently on the hunt for an Ariel Hoop to start that.
Watch videos and go from there. If you do it at home be sure to make sure you have a sturdy cross beam to hang them from.
Other wise you can look for circus training programs in your area. Try googling maybe? Ahaha never mind you found programs. Also I should add that due to the fact im strong on the pole it was easy for me to carry into silks.

hmmmm.... I Wish i could teach myself, I dont htink i know enough to mount hte stuff in my apt. Plus i dont think I'd have the height to practice much, heh.
i talked to the lady from pendulum for a bit, but it didnt work out. I'd emailed her, and my given name is sometimes a boys name. So I wanted to discuss availability and placement options, and then when we spoke on the phone, she was disappointed i was a girl, and i havent managed to get her on the phone since to finish the placement things. I'd also heard of Echo theatre, and spoke to the people there. I think that might be my best bet..
Yea I lucked into having a few clubs that were willing to let me hang stuff and practice on the off hours.
Well good luck with the school and you must post video!!

I trained with Circus OZ when i was younger.
I got in because a friend of mine had been training with them, she got in because her mum teaches sign language and the circus has a large deaf community. So I guess it's who you know, but they do run classes for the public too, or they did, it was a while ago.
I did mainly static trapeze and web which was easy for me because I was a swimmer and had strong shoulders. You can get a college degree in circus skills now though, searchy searchy time.
Good luck, I'd really like to get back into it at some point.

Do you want to learn little stuff for work or become a professional?
If you haven't finished college, transfer to FSU and go to their circus school! You can learn any circus school you can think of. There's a Ringling Bros school in Hollywood, Florida, too.

Coolest new hobby ever! Good luck! I'd be into checking out basic stuff to learn when I get to SoCal. I'm sure there's a bunch of studios in the LA area if I couldn't find anything in San Diego.
My only concern (and I feel totally ignorant saying this but oh well) is, I'm REALLY busty after my BA and all the pics I see of women doing this sort of thing are slender and kinda flat-chested. Is having a curvy body or larger breasts a hinderence with acrobatics? Honestly, this stuff looks less stressful than pole dancing, which I'm pretty good at.
Sorry if this is a bit of a threadjack, btw!

^ It's funny to see this thread now. I was watching a travel channel thing about Vegas shows last night and there was some hoop work on it. It's SO beautiful and I thinking it would be amazing to see hoops in an SC.

I've always wanting to try aerial silk training.
Found a place here in PB I might go check out.
http://www.aerialrevolution.com/classes.htm
I just googled "aerial silk training ____" (name of city in lined space)
Or you local fitness, art, dance, review boards might provide some help.
Tribe.com is also great as its geared toward creative free expression types.

On a slightly different note, I've often wondered where one can learn the "sideshow"aspects of carnival/circus stuff. Not really to make money, just for my own amusement. I would assume it's mostly a word-of-mouth, need to know someone type of thing. I figured out myself how to do the Human Blockhead, where you hammer a nail straight back into your face via your nose. (I occasionally do this at work with a q-tip, just to horrify the girls in the booth. It really doesn't hurt, it just looks icky.) I know Rebecca Solidarity eats glass, and I do apologize for the slight thread jack but it just got me thinking.
There are a few Philly Delilah's girls here, I've seen the pics of the silks and hoop work from some of the more recent parties...where are they learning it? Is there a local place?
waffles are just pancakes with little squares on them.
I tried the silks and the rope with a friend who was in the circus and performs in clubs. It was HARD AS HELL! It's hard to just climb the thing. Your feet get all pinched and you get brush burns all over. The next day I felt like someone had beaten me up. And I was working out with a trainer at the time and could easily climb a pole. I wanted to keep trying though but her husband was scared I'd fall and hurt myself in their yard and he'd get sued. I don't know where you could learn if you aren't in a city that has some sort of school.

Here is a YouTube with her hooping, but I don't know if it's the one I saw before or not.

I got it off the link you posted, in the 'related videos'. Sad to say, it appears Roxi Dlite left us at some point, I couldn't find the one she posted a while back.

Airplay is a good place to start.
The studio's run by a husband-and-wife team (both lovely people and great coaches); she does aerials and he does juggling/roustabout stuff (and he just might know some contacts for you wrt: learning glass eating and other carnival oddities.)
Hello! I've never posted on here before, but a few years back I used to do an aerial striptease act at Showgirls in New Zealand. Now I'm in Melbourne, Australia selling clothes at the clubs.
My favorite aerial training center ever is Hollywood Aerial Arts in Inglewood, California. They get an amazing quality of teacher--usually former Cirque performers--and you can learn hoop, aerial silks, flying or static trapeze, bungee, web,...
Plus, look out for super sexy circus men. Mmmm!
Plus if you pay for a month of classes, minimum 3 classes/week, it's only like $15 per 2-hour class. Love it!
I also hear that "Nimble Arts" in Vermont runs some amazing week-long and weekend aerial workshops. Check it out!
To be honest I was very disappointed with the level of training at Circus Oz here in Melbourne. I found the teachers to be unprofessional and unsafe compared to Hollywood Aerial Arts. People were falling off equipment right left and center! Circus Oz shows may be amazing, just don't take classes there if you want to train properly. Better to sign up with Nica, the big circus school in town. Or if you know a trainer, use studio time at Out Of the Blue.

^^ I thought I posted in this thread already but I guess I was dreaming. HAA is very inexpensive for training and really professional. I love them. I need to go back, its been a while.
Joplin, Austinatalie and I went yesterday to a place and we did the aerial silk stuff. It was soooo much fun, but a lot harder than it looks and I'm so sore I can barely move today![]()
