Default Question! Customer wants me to accompany him on trip...

I moved from CA to NY back in September, and have stayed in contact with a few of my regular customers in case they happen to come to NYC or want to come see me.
One just emailed me (he's the sweetest guy and was always really supportive of my goals, etc., would never try anything on me) saying that he's been thinking about me and would like to fly me out to Las Vegas for a day or so, not to do ANYTHING, but to just go to dinner and see a show or something.
He doesn't want anything out of it, and didn't mention anything about money except to say that he'll pay for everything (a separate room for me, my plane ticket, etc).
However, I really don't see how I could just go there for free, especially when my "companionship" is what I'm paid for!
My question is: how do I say this in a nice way? Do I tell him that I charge for this kind of thing? And if so, how much? I don't want to hurt his feelings or insult him, but I'm really not inclined to fly across the country without compensation.

Oh boy that's a toughie. I would probably say "I would love to go right now, but I really can't afford to take off work. Money's been so tight for me and I forgot how expensive living in New York was!! I wish I could see you though, I really miss you and I'm so homesick for my old friends."

That's basically a polite way of saying if you give me money, I can go. He'll get the message. That puts the ball in his court and if he wants to pay you to come he can. Otherwise, that's that.

Although maybe if you could go on a Monday or something when you wouldn't miss much at work, that could be a fun option too!! That is if you would have fun.

Even with compensation it doesn't sound good.

I agree with Vegas. That is about the nicest way to say that you want money for your time. Also it doesn't imply that anything is going to happen. Maybe, you can even get him to take you shopping!

I say there is no reason to try to disguise the fact that you are just doing it for the money. Otherwise you are just encouraging dangerous, obsessive, PL thoughts and behavior. So, figure out what it would take for you to make it worthwhile and add a little and tell him you'll do it for room, transportation plus $XXX under YYY conditions. Better to miss out on some money than encourage a long-term stalker.

You could go for the trip and maybe a small amount from him ( to cover some work costs ) and then also stay in Vegas a few nights to work . If you are in NY , why not Atlantic City to make it easier for you? He should be the one to do the cross country flight if you aren't up for it.
