    Default Posters vs Lurkers

So there's this girl I am with (the Lord works in mysterious ways)...and I happen to see her reading a web forum on....something...I don't know what...I think it's a beauty forum of some sort, but whatever.

I say "Do you post on that forum?"

    Her-"No."
Me-"why not? What if you have a question about something on the site?"
Her-"I don't know, I just don't want to post, it's not my thing."

So my fellow posters (and any lurkers who want to break their lurking habit)...why do we post and they lurk/not post?

I wonder that too as far as strippers go, I guess non-industry people dont really have anything to contribute. One of my co-workers told me recently though she simply doesnt like this site as a general rule of thumb, lol.
Ive met a several lurkers from SW in my travels >waves<

Because some of us love the attention that comes along with posting.

Although, some of the people who post should definitely only be lurkers.

I lurk on some other forums because I just don't feel like I have anything to contribute. Hmmmm.

By the way, the question was general....not necessarily just about Stripperweb, but about posting on internet forums in general. Why do some people post freely while others never post on the internet?

^ I've thought about going back to lurker status (experimented with it once -- nobody had a clue I was gone. ) It's sure one way to prevent people from attacking you or blasting you with nuclear snark bombs. It's become so common now I just expect it.

I actually lurked for about six months on the site before my first post because the site was so deep and the personalities and protocol so diverse.

I'll be here for four years this September and I haven't even reached 2,000 posts yet. How weird is that? I think male posters should generally try to limit their posts unless they have something substantive to contribute, or to encourage or support somebody going through a tough time.

I'm mostly a lurker by nature. I think I joined SW in 2003? Same account I've always had, I just don't post a lot.

I don't always have a ton to say and it's hard for me to strike a balance between appropriate conversation and TM pointless I. I'm starting to not care as much, though.

I think that if someone is looking at a forum merely as a means of entertainment then they're more likely to lurk then participate.
If someone actually wants to get something out of a site and build relationships then they'll post.

Yeah, I lurk on a lot of science boards and only occassionally post. Mostly, I like to read the debates. Watching scientists fight is amusing sometimes because they try to out-smart each other.

I used to lurk a bit on an undertaker forum. Obviously Im not an undertaker and dont really know the first thing about dealing with dead bodies so had nothing to contribute to the forum, but I found the forums really interesting still!

I had to make a post when I joined coz i was shit scared about my first night of dancing and had to ask some specific questions - including whether I could dance with a spider bite on my ass - which I did hehe.

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

I post here, because even though I am not currently dancing and may never again, it is the one place where I don't have to worry about peoples perceptions of my lack of inhibitions. My hubby is an finance exec and it would not be easily accepted by his peers if they found out about my dancing.

On forums where I don't fit in as well though I don't post, just hang out for info. I lurk on Makeupalley. I tried posting, but I just don't like the format so it bugs the hell out of me and the majority of the posters are very young. Not my scene.

I am a lurker here and everywhere else and to be honest I am like this in real life. I have always been the quiet shy girl and even online I can't change that. I really feel I have nothing to contribute and if I have a question I will just search and I usually find the answer. I have tried to change this because there are times were I feel very lonely (having little friends) but sometimes people just can't change. You are who you are.

My husband has asked me the same thing but about me posting on the pregnancy forum I check often. He keeps telling me to introduce myself on there and to try and make friends instead of standing on the sidelines but my social anxiety kicks in and yeah...

I lurked here for a long, long time before starting to post. There were many times when I wanted to, but like SweetMelissa mentioned, my social anxiety got the better of me. One day, there was a thread about that very topic and I finally decided to jump in.

I really like the community and want to participate, but I only post when I have something (hopefully) useful or relevant to say.

That would me!! I think I'm catching up though.

Actually, when I first joined I posted (some long winded posts too, I might add) but then I quit dancing for a few years and then came back to my same account. I lurked for a long time after returning to the industry and only read things that had to do with the biz.

It's been a year and half of me starting to come out of my shell and be more social on the site. I like to interact with the community because in my daily life I have no outlet, since no one besides those I've met form SW know that I dance.

"The world is full of people who watch things happen, it's up to us that make things happen to give them something to watch."

This doesn't apply to me for SW, IRL though, oh yes.

Personally, I lurk rather than post for the same reasons listed here: I currently have nothing substantial to add to the discussions, and I'm very interested in learning more about the industry. Another reason I tend to lurk more than post on online forums in general is because I'll pm a member if I have a specific question that does not pertain to the discussion instead of wasting bandwidth (I think that's the correct term anyway, not too Web-savvy sometimes). Also, I use the hell out of the search function on forums. Most of the messages I've sent out start with "I used the search function and noticed your comment on X". Everyone I've messaged & received messages from has been really awesome and totally welcoming.

This post officially negates my "lurking-only" status on this forum. I hope I didn't make myself sound too silly.
